Re: links and mailto:

Hi Duane,

Mark got back about the link. ?Here is what he said:

Ok, I understand what's happening. Your mailto link has spaces in it, which makes the URL technically invalid. We should be smart enough and replace those spaces with %20, but we're not doing that right now. Until I fix that, to get your mailto links working, replace each space with %20

So it looks like a bit of user error. ?I am working from a new mac "friendly" program and copied a link address to make the mail to link. ?Clearly it did not add the %20 for the spaces when it copied. ?Will PC and Mac ever get along? ???\_(¥Ä)_/?

Re: Can two Yahoo Groups be merged into one Groups.io group

You'd need to ask Mark to be sure, but I suspect he could do it. Because of the possible confusion and/or the Photo duplicates, I think I'd be more apt to keep them separate though.

Can two Yahoo Groups be merged into one Groups.io group

Good morning...

I am one of the owners of two Yahoo Groups...we are photographers and we exchange Black and White Prints (group 1) and Color Prints (group 2) on a monthly basis.? The Black and White Group has existed since 2002.? There are conversations and as importantly photo albums.? The Color Group was founded in 2008 and also has conversations and photo albums.

I have recently created two groups at Groups.io and we are in the process of preparing to port the two groups to when the logic question is asked...why not just put everything into one group?? No subgroups.? Simply both groups come into one group. ?

The question is simple...can the team do this?? Two Yahoo Groups into one Groups.io group?

As I have thought through the consequences of:
  • Merging conversations from two groups into one...I think it will be OK.? There may be some confusion but I don't know that it will matter much (as it's all water under the bridge).
  • Merging photo albums may also be confusing, particularly if they have the same names...but I am willing to take the time to sort through the photos and albums to get things sorted if there are problems.
  • The Yahoo Groups will be left intact for at least a couple of years...so we will have an example of how things were.

I did look in the Wiki and do not see this addressed.? Thank you in advance.

Re: links and mailto:

Thanks Duane! ?I knew this group would know what to do . ?Will send email to support. ?

Cheers!

Re: links and mailto:

I finally had some time to do some testing on this and couldn't get it to work either, even trying to enter the code directly. I suspect something got tweaked during a change that causes it to fail. It looks like you need to send it to [email protected] for resolution.

Duane

links and mailto:

Hi all,

Has the ability to create ?mailto link in the wiki been removed? ?

I can't get it to work.?

The link is asking members to email the owners of a sub group to request a file upload:

mailto:[email protected]?subject=Non-IR Equine Case History Upload Request

When I make the link and save the page the link reverts back to plain text. Other previously posted mailto links still work. ?

?\_(¥Ä)_/? It's a mystery!

p.s. the same loopholes are in effect if you delete a message after locking, or rename after locking. The same loopholes also apply to "moderate topic."

There are a couple of known loopholes to be aware of. 1. If you've deleted any message in the topic, people can bypass locking by answering that message in their email and 2. If you've renamed or split the topic, they can bypass the locking by responding to any email in the topic with the other name.

Re: Lock topic

It should lock that Topic so the Reply function no longer works on site. Any email replies should bounce with an explanatory note. It won't keep someone from starting a new topic with the same basis though.

Another option is to Moderate Topic. Then you could decide if each post should be allowed, but it's a bit more work.

Re: AOL members bouncing

J_Catlady

Duane,

Thanks for the advice. I've been doing that, but there are a many members, for example, whose cats are not in dire straits and would not really notice whether they're getting the emails or not. They would probably never think about it one way or the other and assume (if they did think about it at all) that traffic was just slow in the group for awhile, which it can be.

There is one member now, using AOL, who's bouncing red. I sent several bounce probes (which I'm convinced are themselves bouncing, so that she never saw them) and then finally removed her, using a new removal notice I've created specifically for this purpose ("you have been removed because emails from groups.io to your email address have been bouncing and you have not responded to bounce probes - to re-subscribe, please send an email to the subscribe address" etc). The message reached her and she immediately resubscribed. However, she still shows the red "B". I'm assuming that's because when someone resubscribes, their membership reconnects back with their old membership, and that there has been no chance for the system to remove the "B" because there have been no group messages since she resubscribed. However, what's going to change as a result of the resubscribe, even when there ARE messages? It seems the same thing will just keep on happening.

I have tried to urge everyone using AOL to switch from it, but there are some last holdouts. And Janice said most of her bouncing members are using yahoo mail....

What I've done in a case like this is send a Bounce Probe to the red ones (doesn't hurt to send them to the blue ones, but shouldn't be needed.) If they're still bouncing in a few days to a week, I remove them. If they haven't noticed that they're not getting group messages, I would doubt that they're still interested. Once in awhile, someone will return after they've been removed, but not often.

Huh? Who here said an error message "said something about" anything? Who's in big trouble with you this time? LOL. I don't recall exactly what Duane said, but I personally said that I don't understand the error messages I saw (and I don't really care that I can't interpret them, since that was not the subject of my post). I am not asking you or anyone else to interpret them. But thanks. I do appreciate it.

Re: Ability to Moderate Photos

Thanks Shal, I'm glad to know that I'm not alone on this. It can be downright scary to not have them. I've had group members' info and work disappear due other members twiddling with things and I really would like to avoid it if I can, without having to shut down whole functions.

There are NO error messages that "say something about" anything -- an error message may or may not identify exactly what happened, but you ALWAYS need to read any error messages and you have to be able to provide the EXACT error message to anyone trying to help you.
?
Most email bounce error messages will start with a three digit number - that number is critical because those numbers are all specific kinds of errors.? The actual definitions may be more detail than you are interested in, but they are important to identifying the cause of the problem.?

Yes, thanks, I didn't look that far down. I see things about the "aol postmaster" etc. but have no idea what it all means.

Re: AOL members bouncing

Yes, it would be nice to know when/if an attempt was made, but I've been "assuming" it would update one of those fields when it tries. Just below those two, there should be Recent Bounces. A couple of Reasons that show on mine are "554 mtaig-mcb04.mx.aol.com ESMTP not accepting connections" and "force failed". Not sure what that last one means though. I don't remember seeing it before about a week ago. Right now, I'm inclined to think it's related to something in the Groups.io system, so there may be a glitch that Support could fix.

Duane, it's not in the delivery history, either. That only shows the 'last successful' and the 'last unsuccsssful' delivery. It doesn't show delivery attempts.
