Re: gMail and Aliases

Account -> Login setting page -> Advanced settings
I can't reference the email I just wrote, because it hasn't been moderated yet, so sorry if this confuses anything in the chain. :)

I guess if the emails appear to be coming from my Gmail address, how would groups.io know which account to post from? That must be the initial tech constraint to having a gmail alias that is also its own groups.io account. So, I guess this could only work if groups.io can parse the "send as" field somehow, as a further identification. And, I'm assuming it doesn't do that now, or why would this even be an issue in the first place? It could just read from that field to determine the sender and not need to know about the alias at all.

So, thinking about it more, it would seem like I can't continue to have 2 accounts, and be able to send email from the personal domain and have it show up as the personal domain, unless groups.io starts using a different header field entirely. (It's obviously not a problem for the two separate accounts to exist, because they currently already do. It's only when sending via email that the issue arises.)

If I had to choose just one account, I'd prefer the personal domain. But there's more chance of something going wrong if I delete the gmail account, since that's the one that I at least know I can email from (and, I don't yet know if/when deleting its group.io account frees it up to use as an alias, since clearly I'd need it for the personal one to function properly). And, because of this, I've already started using the gmail account more with my group.

So I no longer think I need an answer to the question about why the restriction is in place, but as I'm thinking through my various options, I wouldn't mind suggestions for what those more experienced with the platform would do in this position.? :)? It may turn out to be that I just use the gmail account exclusively.

Thanks, and sorry that I hadn't thought this far by the time I hit send on the first message.? :)?

(For extra context, as a group owner and the tech person for my organization, I often do make myself a couple of accounts so I can test under different conditions and vary settings/permissions and view things from various users' perspectives. I don't need to participate in the group as two separate entities. And, to be fair, gmail has sometimes caused issues with our current (soon to be former) Mailman list serv, so it was easier to have two accounts so that whatever gmail decided to do, I was a member and covered.)

This is exactly the setting I needed (sorry for bumping an old thread, but it seemed to be the most recent on this topic) for the same problem, different symptoms: because I have two groups.io accounts for my group, I wasn't seeing rejections. Instead every email was being posted as if sent from my gmail account, even if I had used gmail to "send mail as" my personal domain email address.

I had hoped setting this alias for the account using my personal domain would fix the problem, but when I try to add my gmail address as an alias, I get an error message that the address is already registered, so I can't add it.

Is there any way around this restriction? There may be circumstances in which someone uses both their gmail address and one that goes through that gmail account.

I would think that I could get around this by deleting the gmail address' Groups.io account, only keeping the personal domain one, and then presumably I can set gmail as an alias. But,?I'm new to groups.io, and don't yet know if accounts can be truly deleted (releasing the email address for "clean" reuse again) and even if so, how long a system purge takes.

But my question still stands: for gmail addresses especially, where people might have valid reasons for creating a groups.io account with their gmail address (maybe pre-dating a personal domain?), and also having a different groups.io account with a different address that relies on that same gmail address for mail delivery, is this restriction necessary, and can anything be done to get around this?

Thanks for any help,
Sarah.

If you previously established a password for your account, you should still be able to access the group via your old email address and password. At that point you can invite the new address to your group and promote it to Owner. Or if your group has a second Owner, you can have that person do it for you.

If your group 1) has no second Owner, and 2) you cannot regain access to the old email address, and 3) you have not established a password, there is nothing you can do but contact support and beg for assistance.?See?/g/GroupManagersForum/wiki/Help%21-I-Can%27t-Find-Any-Group-Content%21?for further details.

Assuming you do get help, be sure to remedy one of the above so you don't have a repeat of this problem. Generally speaking, every group should have at least two Owners; even if it's just you subscribed with a second email address.

Good luck,
Bruce

If using the online message editor, click on the "Add Pictures" icon instead of the "Add Attachments" icon. If sending by email, you will need to do something similar in order to get the image into DATA or CID format. See?/g/GroupManagersForum/topic/24519556#11066?for more info.

If it still doesn't work, or the "Add Pictures" link is not available, you probably aren't using an html message format. Go to Admin>Settings>Message Formatting and select "Force HTML Emails" (and deselect "Plain Text Only"). Now go to?/account?page=prefs?and select "HTML" for your Editor Preference. Be sure to save these changes.

To my knowledge, the only way to "embed" a non-photo attachment is to upload the attachment to some public cloud storage and insert a hyperlink to it in the message.

Hope this helps,

Yes.

It would seem that my best strategy is to get these people signed up with as few emails from Groups.io needed as possible, since they can't seem to find ANY of them. That's why I initially chose to invite, to cut down on the interaction required. I just want to be sure that, for these NCs, this will be sufficient.
It should work, if they can receive groups.io emails at all. Mindspring and Earthlink have been blocking groups.io recently, so that may be a factor (Ref:?).

Create a hashtag with a "Reply To" setting of "Reply only to sender." Tag any topic you initiate with that hashtag and replies will come to you instead of the group.

You may still receive some long emails but at least they won't be annoying everybody else.

There is a group setting that can make this visible to all members, but its not enabled in most groups.? I do have it enabled in a group for a club I belong to, so we don't really need to use the Directory there, but it's enabled, too.

Ken,

You've put a lot of research?and thought into your questions. What you need to do is subscribe to your group with another email address and set that subscription as a regular user. That way, you will be able to see what is going on from both sides.

If you aren't a group owner/moderator and want to know more, also use this second email address to make your own personal group for testing.

FYI:
Members List - Usually only for Owner?/ Moderators - but can be set to be available to all
Directory List - Only for those with privacy settings set to make their profile viewable

Members visibility

¿ªÔÆÌåÓý

I¡¯m still puzzled about settings that control the visibility (or otherwise) of the Directory and Members List.

When starting a new Group, I set the Directory to be visible to subscribers, but one of them then informed me they were unable to see anyone in the Directory apart from themselves. I checked for this Group (ManagersForum) and although the Directory was visible, it was only showing a message that I needed to update my Group Profile Privacy options, in which I found that I was only allowing my profile to be viewed by Owners/Moderators. Changing this to subscribers and the Directory then showed a lot of profiles.

However, is that everyone¡¯s profile? Or just the profiles of those who have opened up their privacy options to allow their profile to be viewed by other subscribers?

Also, if I allow the Members List to be viewable by subscribers, what information do they see and where is the button/link to show it? As an Owner/Moderator, the Members List is located in the Admin section which is obviously not displayed for regular subscribers. So where do they access the Members List? Is that just placed in the main section of the LH menu?

It¡¯s hard to figure this out when Groups of which one is only a member do not expose their settings that determine what you see and when one is the Owner/Moderator, you get a different display from that for regular subscribers which makes it hard to tweak the settings and then see if the result is what you¡¯re wanting for your Group members.

So, would appreciate some additional explanation of these settings.

Re: member not confirmed

That should do the trick, for any of them that receive and respond to the confirmation email sent by Groups.io
That's what I figured, but these members are receiving neither the invitation in the first place, nor the confirmation emails.

I have removed the members from my group and sent fresh invitations, but do I have to worry that, from a Groups.io-wide perspective that their accounts are considered to be NC? I wouldn't assume that removing them from my particular group suddenly removes any larger groups.io properties, so I don't know if now their email addresses are "known" and perpetually flagged in the larger system. Now that I've removed them, I can no longer try to resend confirmation emails again. (Which by their accounts they weren't getting anyway.)

Just to confirm my understanding of the process: ?If (and this appears to be a big if at this point) they are able to accept my latest invitation, will that automatically confirm their groups.io account? It would seem that my best strategy is to get these people signed up with as few emails from Groups.io needed as possible, since they can't seem to find ANY of them. That's why I initially chose to invite, to cut down on the interaction required. I just want to be sure that, for these NCs, this will be sufficient.

Thanks for your help,
Sarah.

What about a database where they can enter the information you are looking for. You can either have a column?so they can add their name or you can just have columns where they list who they have in mind along with any other information that you would need. Leeni?

While you could use a poll, you would have to have a list of alternatives in mind to do that, which kind of defeats the purpose of soliciting input.

Certainly you could simply ask your membership to submit names, either names alone or with a brief (one or two sentence justification) for each to the group owner address.? If you're worried they might respond on-list, and that's really not wanted, then as part of the announcement to the group state only to the group owner address and then promptly lock the topic asking for the names.? They know exactly what you want and in exactly what format.? Definitely include the actual group owner address in the message so that they can easily respond to it.

It was just a brief mention ("It's below my two current (and delayed...) main priorities, the ability for group owners to charge subscriptions, and an iOS/Android app."), Duane provided you with more complete info.
