Re: long term viability

Edited

?Peter,?

I would like to be able to answer this question.

?
?So would the rest of us, I imagine.
?
On the one hand what you're asking is a fair question, on the other it is unanswerable - by any service.
?
Its financial viability rests on its business model. I think having monthly and yearly subscribers gives it a more stable revenue base than might readily be achieved by an advertising-based model. And it is certainly more attractive to those of us who are less than thrilled about having our information tracked and sold by all of the "free" web services out there.
?
As to its future management, all I can say is that it is owned by someone for whom this is a passion project - he's unlikely to transfer it into uncaring hands. He already did that once, when Yahoo bought his prior email list service, and is dismayed by the consequences. At the bottom of any page click on About then take the link to the .
?
To be fair though, the early history of Yahoo Groups did not uncaring management. At least up until 2007 or so its leadership definitely cared for the product and were working to make it thrive. But that's history now.

long term viability

¿ªÔÆÌåÓý

I love the features of groups.io.? I love that it has support and an active forum.? I am an admin for a mailing group on Yahoo Groups.? I want to recommend to the board of non-profit (whose group it is) that we move from Yahoo Groups to groups.io

?

However, the board has one question: how do we know groups.io will continue to persist in the medium to long term?? Is it viable?? Might it be sold out to some billionaire who does not give a stuff and it deteriorates to become Return of Yahoo Groups ¨C erratic service and no support?

?

I would like to be able to answer this question.

As a want-to-be consultant, my recommendation would be to _not_ offer
the discount, because it leads to "you knew, or should have known the
content of the group", and as such, you are liable for blah, where
"blah" is something deplorable, despicable, and otherwise abhorrent, in
the eyes of the plaintiff, situations.

If you provide tools that enable the construction or doing of something,
you absolutely do not want to have any inkling of what your clients are
doing with those tools. To have such knowledge gives one more liability
than the client who did the actions.

?Specifically religious beliefs, which I think makes that case qualitatively different
The current trend is to present something as both:
* A Free Speech issue;
* A Religious Rights issue;

Courts do their best to avoid getting involved in religious disputes.

I remember a court case several decades back, where the judge asked at
least once an hour, why it wasn't a simple religious dispute, and as
such, outside the purview of the court. I think it was the point at
which each side was ready to tell the bailiff to arrest both opposing
counsel, and their client, for some variant of theft, did the judge
understand that it really was about who got the money.

There is a reason Masonic Jurisprudence frowns upon getting involved in
civil court.

Insert standard legal disclaimer.

Re: Your Groups.io Account Is Bouncing

AT&T is my ISP. For pop3 mail, the server setting is pop.att.yahoo.com
I've got ATT.net, Live.com, Juno.com, & Gmail.com accounts. It is my ISP addresses that give me regular trouble (connection) but rarely any problem with any other accounts.

Bob,

But the actual provfider for all of ATT's domains and same for Verizon
are actually Yahoo or is it now Oath?
Verizon now owns Yahoo Mail and AOL as brands under its Oath subsidiary.

As I understand it ATT and its domains switched away from Yahoo Mail as
their email service provider around the time of the sale of Yahoo
properties to Verizon.

Verizon domains had email service primarily through Yahoo Mail at least
up until Verizon's purchase of AOL (which was earlier than Yahoo). I
don't know if those are now a mix of Yahoo Mail and AOL or if they're
still Yahoo Mail under the hood.

How long does it take for yahoo mail spam filter to learn?

Hi! So, some of my groups.io messages are landing in my spam folder. Thankfully, the ones from this group do not land there though! But, I am curious as to how many messages that I mark as "not spam" it takes before the filter learns and stops putting them in spam? Thanks for any insight!

?That's why this topic terrifies me as a moderator.

I think it is essential to GMF's mission that no one feel excluded or belittled when they come here seeking help running their group(s). So an often divisive issue such as political beliefs is treacherous.

I did consider not approving the original post, on the principle that no one's political beliefs, not even Mark Fletcher's, are on-topic here. But ultimately I decided that because the message does appear on site I couldn't simply ignore it. Time will tell if that was an error in judgement.
?
In recent years, the Supreme court has decided that establishing business practices that favor or disfavor groups of people based on the owner's set of beliefs is valid and is a form of free speech

?Specifically religious beliefs, which I think makes that case qualitatively different than Mark's discount. Protecting the expression of one's religious beliefs have a special place in U.S. law, which goes back to the founding of the nation.?

However, I'm divided on my opinion as to whether or not businesses? should or should not exercise that "right".? On one side, it really smacks of discrimination to say "you can buy my product but you can't".? Or, you get a discount and you don't.

?I'm personally a believer in E pluribus unum? - the ideal that we are together citizens first, and members of religious, ethinic, political, and other subgroups second. That does not mean that our differences should be ignored or suppressed, but that we should not allow those differences to prevent us from living and working together peaceably.

Re: clarification on direct add feature

Al,
?
1. Is there a wait period to have them approved? If so, why and how long?
?
?Yes, if you Invite or Direct Add more than 20 addresses in a 24-hour period.
?
?The "why" is spammers, the "how long" is indeterminate - it is a manual process.
?
In my own experience once approved for an initial Direct Add my later ones were no longer deferred. But I don't know if "my" means me as an individual or if it would apply to any owner/mod of that group. Nor do I know if others would have the same experience.

2. Will all addresses be added or will I run into a similar situation? In other words, is there a limit of direct adds? If so, can I submit in batches?

?In my experience the entire batch was deferred, and then the entire batch added.?
?
?That seems to differ from your report of some being added immediately and others not.
?
I had ?some in the batch not get added because typos made the email address invalid (user2example.com instead of @), and others were added but immediately had Bouncing status - again usually typos in the user name or domain.?
?
?
The form may not handle leading or trailing spaces on the line, I think I ran into that in some cases.

?

3. On the group I just used direct addon, I simply cut and pasted the addresses into the edit field, each one on a separate line. Would it be better to upload a .txt file with each address on a separate line?

?AFAIK it shouldn't matter. I was working from an Excel spreadsheet and created a column containing
Display Name <user@...>
for? ?each person to be added. I then copied the occupied cells of that column (a couple hundred rows) and pasted it directly into the Direct Add form.? That is, I excluded from the copy Row 1 (which had a column heading) and the empty cells below the bottom row in use.

Well I'm very surprised to see that also.? However, Mark Fletcher owns groups.io (as far as I know) and if he wishes to offer discounts or deals, it's his right to do so.

Dan Hartford

At the risk of getting flamed and being called names, here are my thoughts on the question raised in this post.?

In today's world, politics cannot be separated from everyday business.? Seniors get discounts in many businesses as do clergy or uniformed police and military,. Certain classes of organizations don't have to pay taxes, etc.? In recent years, the Supreme court has decided that establishing business practices that favor or disfavor groups of people based on the owner's set of beliefs is valid and is a form of free speech? For example who can and can't order a wedding cake at a bakery or what medical services and products are or or are not covered in employee health plans..?

However, I'm divided on my opinion as to whether or not businesses? should or should not exercise that "right".? On one side, it really smacks of discrimination to say "you can buy my product but you can't".? Or, you get a discount and you don't.? ?More so when you have no control over the metric being used (e.g., skin color, race, nationality, gender, etc.) and less so when you do have a choice (profession, choice of clothing, hair color, political viewpoint, etc).? ?But on the other hand, one could argue that part of living in a village is to look after those who need it (discounts for seniors, or a free meal for a homeless person) or to offer benefits as a way to say "thank you" to a group of people (e.g., discounts for military or police).? So, with the Groups.IO question, one side of me says "Slippery Slope" and not a good idea, and the other side says "very good to support a cause you believe in".? ?

All things considered though,? I think I'm okay with the discount on Groups.IO.? ?And, perhaps it should be extended to Charities and Environmental Protection groups as well.??

clarification on direct add feature

Hello,

?

I recently joined this forum and wanted to share an experience to see if it has worked differently with other owners.

?

I recently moved a group over to Groups. IO and decided to give the direct add a try. I paid for the one month premium service at the cost of $10. I submitted over 350 legitimate email address and once approved got a message that 181 had gotten added. The remainder I had to send a link for them to subscribe, which is exactly what I was trying to avoid. .

?

Couple of questions for you more seasoned/experienced owners/moderators:

1. Is there a wait period to have them approved? If so, why and how long?

2. Will all addresses be added or will I run into a similar situation? In other words, is there a limit of direct adds? If so, can I submit in batches?

3. On the group I just used direct addon, I simply cut and pasted the addresses into the edit field, each one on a separate line. Would it be better to upload a .txt file with each address on a separate line?

Look forward to responses.

Best,

Al

Re: re time for emails to arrive

Win,

Shal, here are the Return paths for the 2 emails I mention which had been delayed 23 minutes.

?I don't need the Return-Path or Delivered-To fields, but ?I do need more of the Received fields. The three you included were all internal to your ISP and did not show any delay.

I hope this is helpful. If there is something else you need, just ask...

?I still anticipate that the delay will be found in the hop from Groups.io to your ISP; which won't really tell us why. But it is still worth looking because we could get a surprise and find the delay at a hop internal to either Groups.io or your ISP.

Re: re time for emails to arrive

Shal, thanks for your reply.
I am answering this from the group home page because your message has never come in to my InBox at all, nor my webmail, and it is? over 5? hours since your reply landed on the group. I had to check on the group because I was wondering if my message had ever arrived there.
In answer to your questions...?
1... Some emails I send TO the group never arrive at all...
?Your reply...If you mean that they do not post to the group's?Messages?page have a look in the group's?Activity?log to see if they are listed as "attempted to send" (meaning that the message was rejected).?
My reply... No, there was not anything listed in the activity log about the specific email.

2... Some emails (not necessarily from me) arrive on the group home page, but never get delivered to me.
Your reply... ?Go to the?Subscription?page while visiting the group (or click on your row in the group's??Members?list) and click onto the?Email Delivery History?tab. See if anything in the?Recent Bounces?section lines up with the missing messages.
My reply... No, nothing at all in the recent bounces
3... They took 20 minutes to arrive back in WebMail and from there to my InBox.
?Your reply... That sounds like your ISP is??messages from Groups.io.? That's a (dubious in my opinion) anti-spam technique.
The Received fields in one of the delayed messages would in that case show that the delay is at the hop between Groups.io's outbound server and your ISP's inbound server.
My reply... I have taken details of 2 separate emails which arrived but both had been delayed 23 minutes... each email is from different days do it isn't a glitch at one particular time.. I have copied the Return Path of both and will send them in a different email... would you please take a look and see if you can find out what is happening??
Tomorrow (11.23 PM now) I will contact the ISP again and ask about Greylisting.
If I don't get a satisfactory answer, I will do as you suggest and report it to Mark and see if he can resolve it... What details will he require? He won't want to phone them because we are in Australia, so will the website URL be sufficient?

It is now exactly 5? hours since your reply and still nothing in webmail or In Box.

Thanks
Win

My ISP insists they are not blocking messages.. and that has to be correct because I can post and receive properly, most of the time.

?It may be technically true that they aren't blocking Messages from Groups.io, but it does sound like they are deferring them.

Could you please let me know if there is something I can do to solve this problem ?

?See this related topic, start at message #10318.
?
Go back to your ISP and ask if there's a way to whitelist all messages from Groups.io as a sender, or to remove it from greylisting.

The other option is to report it to [email protected] along with contact info for your ISP to see if Mark can convince them to "play nice" with Groups.io.

I had seen that in a tweet some weeks ago, but I didn't know it had crept into the site. ?I'm not thrilled about seeing politics injected into what I think should be a neutral, or "safe place," that is welcoming to all.
