bounced emails

开云体育

We moved our group from yahoogroups to groups.io on July 4th.

?

I have now have about 45 emails that are bounced that were working fine on yahoo groups.?

The members can send a message to the group, but they do not receive messages from others or a copy of their own message when they post.

Most of the problem emails are @triad.rr.com?? the others seem to be @abusinessname

?

A few may be old unused emails and they have a second email in the group and I am going to try and remove those once I verify they no longer use that email

?

When I go to the members account and look at email delivery history this is what I see:

This error suggest that the mail server on the recipient's end is temporarily down. There is nothing you (or groups.io) can do to fix it.

Do you mean Bounced, as in a red B badge on their membership row? If so they shouldn't be able to post messages. Nor when Bouncing (blue B), I think.

So I wonder if they are posting from those same addresses.

The examples are marked as temporary errors (4xy) which normally would not place them on Bouncing status until the problem has continued for quite a while (four days, minimum).

but they do not receive messages from others or a copy of their own message when they post.

Groups.io stops trying to deliver messages to members with either Bouncing or Bounced status.

When I go to the members account and look at email delivery history this is what I see:

?I don't think you do.

"server not available" sounds like an error internal to that email service. Most likely members need to contact their email service to see what the problem is. It is possible that if you (or they) report the situation to [email protected] that Mark would look into it, and maybe contact their service to resolve it.

Hmmm...now that I look at it more closely, that URL is pretty misleading.

It's about email client software, Microsoft Exchange. It's not what it appears to be.

Don't be afraid to click on it.

Just in case it wasn't you that reported this to support, apparently the problem with those particular email services is affecting many Groups.io users.

Mark is asking that users of those services complain to their service directly, he's been unable to reach those services himself.

I was probably the first to contact Groups.io support because a pending subscription notice wasn't received at home. It was several days old when I found it via the web.

Not sure where most of the problem is, but @sc.rr.com is affected and the RR/Spectrum tech I spoke with suggested it was system-wide.

It would probably be good for folks to call RR/Spectrum (877) 566-4892 if for no other reason than to get their attention about doing something stupid. If "too much mail" is causing them a problem they need to upgrade their servers.

They told me Groups.io needed to call them and request removal of the block/delay and I sent the number to do that to Mark via the "Support" email address.

Meanwhile, we should be getting the mail in question, but it's probably going to come in in big batches because they're delaying the mail by telling Groups.io to try again later, then finally accepting the backlog later. That business of delaying and creating a big backlog that's finally accepted doesn't make much sense to me, but that's what RR/Spectrum are doing.

I think it's a case of Google and Yahoogroups are "too big to block" and Groups.io isn't... yet.

So I just spent an hour on the phone with spectrum (triad.rr.com) who tells me they are not blocking [email protected].??? ?It is a (dubious in my opinion) anti-spam technique called greylisting. The theory is that spambots won't retry.?

It may be fine when you're service is receiving scattershot spam from all over the place. But if you can identify a bulk sender, such as a mailing list service, it makes no sense to me to increase the workload on your servers and theirs, and decrease the satisfaction of your mutual customers, by continuing to defer their messages. Either block the service outright or pass it.

I think it's a case of Google and Yahoogroups are "too big to block" and Groups.io isn't... yet.

?Indeed. I suppose Groups.io does not yet represent enough traffic into their service to be concerned about the extra load. And if it means a few hundred users decide to switch to one of their competitors, eh, no big deal.

Sandra,

So I just spent an hour on the phone with spectrum () who tells me they are not blocking [email protected].???

?It is technically true that they are not blocking , they're delaying messages instead (greylisting, as mentioned to Jim).?

Perhaps more pertinently, while the Sender (envelope-from) is Groups.io, the From address (header-from) of those messages are (for the most part) that of the posting member. That may be a factor, it has been known to cause some Microsoft-based services to outright reject messages from Groups.io (especially when the message is being returned to the member who posted it).

So 72 members of my group are getting bounced and not receiving or able to send a message to this group.? I really do not want to move back to yahoogroups?? but it worked until I moved here.

?You have to do what's in the best interests of your group, of course. I would recommend giving the situation a few more days to see if Mark can resolve it. I'd probably also be telling the affected members that perhaps they would enjoy using a more reliable email service.

I know that may sound snarky or glib, but it is based in personal experience. Years ago I had this same problem (greylisting) with Verizon as my email service delaying messages from Yahoo Groups. Sometimes the delay would be long enough that Y!Groups would count the message as bounced and I'd never get it. As a mod for several groups I found this intolerable and switched email services. Ultimately I fired Verizon as my ISP as well, giving my business to a competitor with faster speeds, lower prices, and (at that time) no shenanigans with my inbound email.

Sandra,

The Spectrum tech:

1) Is lying thru his/her teeth
or
2) Was too lazy to check to see if the problem really exists.
or
3) Checked for a block ONLY on [email protected] rather than everything from Groups.io.

The tech I called confirmed a system wide issue. The issue is with Spectrum, not with Groups.io. In short, Spectrum is being stupid.

Good morning,
Our group had been experiencing the same thing. We figured out pretty quickly on our end that each of our members (or a designee from each department) would need to contact their city's IT area and make sure that groups.io was listed as a "safe site" for the firewalls to allow messages through.

My group is for law enforcement agencies, though - and each jurisdiction has their own internet usage policy. I'm not sure if your group is similar.

Mark reports that RoadRunner/Spectrum should no longer be blocking/delaying mail from Groups.io. He didn't mention calling them, but I assume so.

Yes. Great theory, but very stupidly applied when blocking a mailing list where subscribers signed up willingly for the email they receive. If it's solicited it shouldn't be blocked or delayed. (Ex part time abuse desk staffer here).

WooHooo!?? I’m seeing my triad.rr.com folks saying no longer bouncing via web!!!!?? This is great news.? Now how long before they no longer have the BIG BLUE B by their email in members list??? I will check with some of the people who have brought up the issue on the group to confirm they are getting messages.

Those in Bouncing status still won't receive group mails until they click on the link in the bounce probe.? You can manually send a probe if you're anxious to resolve bouncing status.
