There is a utility that's supposed to be able to import a PG Offline download into groups.io.

Hallo Alex,

I was given a .zip file of the download from Yahoo for a group we rescued.
It has the name 'groupname-yahoo-group-20191024T205025Z-001.zip
Extracted has a 'Files' folder plus several messages files like 'groupnamemessages30001-40000.txt'
Each message file is in the order of 50Mb and is a long continuous series of messages each starting with :

From DummyAddressAndDate Thu Sep 16 11:42:17 2010
X-Yahoo-Msgnum: 1
X-Digest-Num: 2
Message-ID: <106033.2.1.959270079@...>
Date: Thu, 18 Feb 1999 11:27:44 +0100
From: xxxxx
Subject: xxxxxxx

and separated by a few blank lines.

I hope this helps.

OK,
Tony

I also took advantage of Yahoo letting me download the archive in an MBOX file.

So in addition to the question about a tutorial on the import process I have these questions:

# I'll be dammed if I can remember where I put the MBOX files from Yahoo.
Does anyone know what extension they/it would have, or what the default file name would be if my group's name was CNVC-trainers?
That info could help me find those/that file.

# PG-downloader will export to SQLLite dump, MySQL dump, plain text (pipe delimited HTML),?
plain text (pipe delimited text).? ??
Are any of those formats of any use for importing into a groups.io message archive?

Sure would appreciate any help with that.

OR? ?does anyone have any suggestion of a way to make the archive I have in PG-downloader available to many users .... Short of telling all of them to install a copy of PG-downloader?

Help..... I hate to have the community lose two decades of history.

Speaking as a tech person who has to deal with customer tech people... sometimes the quickest way to fix this kind of issue is to raise it with the security officer (if they have one). The reason being, running only a deprecated protocol/cipher suite (and TLS 1.0 has been signposted for a looong time, so no excuses) can be construed as negligent. In the event of a malware/ransomware attack, this could be used as a get-out by the insurance company to reduce or avoid payouts. The security officer will (should) have a wider view of things beyond the technical and should have the power to get it sorted. The techs, to be fair, typically have a high workload and will regard what is a relatively low-risk 'hole' (generally it's the payload that's dangerous, not the delivery mechanism) as something get around to sometime. Or possibly, the only person who knows how to manage their mail gateway has moved on or been let go...

Perhaps as much to the point as the security aspect, is how much email is failing to be delivered - it will affect far more than Groups.io delivery... As Lena's hinted, it should be a fairly trivial exercise to update/configure the mail gateway in most cases.

Re: Deferred - tls: server selected unsupported protocol version 301 in Sent Invitations list #invitation

Thanks. I think I understand the problem now. Though I am not sure how I am going to explain to my Board member that she has to convince her tech people to update their system!

OK, I think understand the problem. Now I just have to figure out how to explain to my Board member how to explain to usmd's tech people what the issue is and get them to care about it.

Thanks, everyone!

Re: Deferred - tls: server selected unsupported protocol version 301 in Sent Invitations list #invitation

I'd say both sides are guilty:
usmd.edu supports only old version TLSv1.0 nowadays considered "insecure";
groups.io refuses to use TLSv1.0 and doesn't fall back to unencrypted connection (unreasonable in my opinion).

When I set up my personal mailserver, I compile openssl (last version, supports TLSv1.3;
I upgrade as soon as a new version becomes available) with TLSv1.0 and SSLv3 enabled too.
I know that those versions are considered obsolete and insecure, but using them is better than
falling back to unencrypted. And falling back to unencrypted is better than refusing an incoming message.

For what it's worth, the did not work for me yesterday when I tried after reading this thread.? It does work today.? Perhaps the issue reported was? caused by problems on their website.

I thought it might be useful to show you what my group members receive. This is for my small family group.

I think there is an error somewhere for sure!

I just set up a monthly reminder for a group. There was no email saying that it had been set up.?
And yes, you can see if the announcement went out - in Activity.
It says: ?The monthly reminder email "Monthly Reminder #monthly-notice" was sent to the group, via system.

Did you write up a monthly reminder with text? Look at it now and see what's in the body of the email that will be sent out.
And are both message active and special message both ticked.

You said you deleted the Welcome message. Not sure why, but my point - did you delete the wrong one?
I hope you checked out this help page: ?/helpcenter/ownersmanual/1/managing-member-notices/monthly-reminder-notice

And I assume when you created the monthly reminder, you chose the Monthly Reminder notice. You can see - that is the label.

Frances

Re: Monitor Participation

This is interesting - I need to clarify a little more of what I see - i did infact receive emails for both the "special message" and the "monthly reminder" in my email inbox, saying that they have been set up having ticked both boxes (special message & active). Good so far I suppose, but no actual messages to see just announcement of the messages being set up.
These announcement of messages - whilst present in emails do not show on the group messages page either.
So on the group page itself there is no way of knowing whether any messages/announcements have been sent out. All we have is the announcements in the emails and no actual messages - barry

Re: Monitor Participation

My groups are legacy enabled and the monthly reminder went through. So no.?

When did you set up the monthly reminder? How long ago? Maybe you just missed it for this month if you were doing it too late.?

I believe that means that the email service is using an unsupported/obsolete version of TLS.? I don't think Groups.io uses 1.0 any more, so it's something usmd.edu will need to upgrade.
