Re: #featurerequest Request for Cover Image caption #featurerequest

Thanks for the Editing Wiki info, Bruce.

Apparently my group's message formatting choice of 'text only' DOES affect the Wiki Editor.

Clicking on the hamburger menu to show advanced formattng in the Wiki Editor for a Home page I created shows a second line of formatting but that line is missing the dropdowns for font, points (size), and for text color, and highlighting (background color).

Looks like we'll just have to live with that if we want to keep 'text only' status for our group.

Thanks for all the suggestions, Bruce. They helped me deal with the 'problems' I was having with creating a Sticky Wiki.

Hopefully all the info in this topic will help other GIO owners and moderators who find themselves in a similar situation.

Cheers!

Wiki Sidebar #wiki

I've added a sidebar to my wiki. It's markdown, the preview is ok, but it is shown on the pages as text.

Did I miss some setting?

Joining the subgroup directly still not possible?

Hello

I thought that this issue was resolved recently, but I tested it and got this result:

A test user (i.e. me) tries to subscribe to my test group's subgroup directly, via e-mail.? Groups.io replies (from the subgroup), saying that one should reply to confirm the subscription (to the subgroup).? The reply from Groups.io mentions the subgroup specifically and not the main group at all.? After replying to the message, the moderator receives a message from Groups.io that the test user wants to join the *main* group (not the subgroup). The moderator approves the membership.? The test user is now a member of the main group, but not of the subgroup.? After a few minutes, the test user receives a welcome message from the *main* group, and the moderator receives confirmation that the test user joined the main group.? The test user is still not subscribed to the subgroup.

Is this still what it supposed to happen?? Is there no way to make the test user join both main and subgroup simultaneously?

Samuel

Paul -- I haven't played with it enough to advise on you that. Optimum width will probably vary between desktop/mobile, too.

As to text color, there doesn't seem to be any text/background color control button anywhere.
Click the far right icon to open the Advanced Toolbar (see screenshot below). At that point you should get text color and background color icons.

As mentioned earlier, perhaps it's because our group is set to text only.?
That Message Formatting setting affects the message editor but not the wiki editor.

Change device for Two Factor Authentication #howto

Hi,

I've already configured Two Factor Authentication for my account by using Google Authenticator. Now I'd like to change the authenticator to a new device. To do that I tried to disable TFA once, but it didn't work. The status of TFA is always ON even after entering password to disable my TFA configuration.
Are there any tips to switch device for TFA?

Thanks,
Atsushi

Bruce,

Well... Some more fiddling around and I finally found & got the 'sticky wiki' function to work. Still haven't figured out what the maximum image size is cuz when I make the image larger the bottom portion is cut off. a horizontally an image ratio of 3:1 is either too small or, enlarged the bottom gets cut off. With a 5:1 ratio that works better and can be slightly larger than the 3:1 image without cutting off the bottom.

Looks like trial and error will be the way to figure that ratio/size part out.

As to text color, there doesn't seem to be any text/background color control button anywhere. As mentioned earlier, perhaps it's because our group is set to text only. Or I'm just not looking in the right place for the color control.

So far so good. At least I can now put a photo at the top of the message page.

Cheers!

Re: Download members list

ELM,

But I don't understand what happens when I do that. I click download
and then a new tab webpage opens with the data all separated with
commas.
What I usually do at that point is select all, copy (Ctrl+A Ctrl+C), then switch to Excel and paste (Ctrl+V) it into cell A1 of a sheet. Then use Text to Columns (Data menu) to split the data.

What I really want is a CSV file that I can open via Excel with
everything separated out into columns.
I see you've already figured that out. Normally I'm only interested in keeping the .xlsx file, not the .csv, which is why I use copy/paste.

I suggest you use the hashtag #featurerequest or #suggestion.
Wait until January 6th since Mark is on holiday and only urgent matters are being handled, I believe.

When you see that larger picture, right click and select save image as and select where you want to save it when the Save As screen opens.?

I will only comment on the question about font colour. In my settings, I can use the "hamburger" menu to open the second line of tools in the wiki (and in messages, as well). It offers font colours. However, I have found that I don't have a full set of tools when I use my iPhone. No choice of font or size. I do on my MacBook.

Bonnie -- Are you talking about the Invite, or the Welcome notice?

An invitation has canned wording as you noted, and does contain an email address, but does not actually instruct anyone to post there.

The default Welcome notice can be overridden by creating a custom one from scratch and making it Active.

See also?/static/help#membernotices

Hope this helps,
Bruce
I recently ran into a related problem when I created an announcements-only subgroup and populated it by Direct Add. I had customized the Welcome notice to make it clear that only a Moderator/Owner could post, and the group address was included in the notice only to encourage the members to add it to their Contacts/Address Book, to identify it as a "safe sender." What I hadn't counted on is that, due to using Direct Add, the Welcome message was followed immediately by a cheerful "canned" message from The Groups.io Team:

"Hello Robert ...
You have been added by the moderators to their Groups.io group SUBGROUPNAME

The address to send an email to the groups (sic) is [email protected]"

This reopens the can of worms referred to in the subject line of this topic. In spite of any previous disclaimers, some will click on the email link and then wonder why their message is rejected. This problem seems to be on the cusp between a bug to be reported and a feature enhancement to be requested. I'm leaning towards presenting it to the beta group as a request for an enhancement, but I'm bringing it up here in GMF first to solicit suggestions on how to reword the Direct Add message for an Announcement Group, perhaps to substitute the group-owner's address for the group's address. I assume that the programming for generating a "You have been added ..." message can be modified to set a flag for an Announcement Group and send an alternate message.

This will keep people from creating new hashtags. It will not keep them from misusing the system hashtags mentioned earlier (#chat, #poll, #cal-invite, etc), after such a feature re-generates one.?

The only way to completely eliminate all hashtags is to use the setting you described and also disable all such system features, including the calendar, polls, chats and some of the integrations. See?/g/GroupManagersForum/message/18538?for a [probably incomplete] list.

And I have deleted all hashtags which I could see as defined.

Re: Download members list

It is much easier to use the "Save Link As ..." function to save the member list. On Firefox you right-mouse click on the Download button and select the "Save Link As .." option. Other browsers may work slightly differently, but I would suspect they all have this ability. This directly saves the CSV format file without having to display and then save the page. It eliminates a step or two and is much cleaner and easier way to do this. I like to download a backup member list each month and it only takes a few moments to do all my lists.

1.? Go to Members section on left panel.
2.? On the blue button on top, toggle to choose Members.
3.? Click Download.? A new screen appears with a list of the members in a not-so-friendly format.
4.? Right click on that page and choose Save Page As... and click save.
5.? This saves as a .CSV file and you can open it directly and it'll open via Excel and the columns are already separated out.
6.? You can save it as .xlsx after opening.

I hope this helped.
