Thanks for that suggestion Bruce. It maybe will mollify my members missing the image on the messages page.

I haven't used Wiki pages yet and so am not fully clear how it all works. In any event we do change our Masthead Photo every so often, so hopefully changing out the photo on that Wiki page will be simple to do. But if it is easy to change just the photo in that Wiki page it sounds like a go.

Comments.... Suggestions?

Use an image editor to resize/crop it. The narrower it is top-to-bottom, the better...too many pixels in the vertical dimension and the bottom will be cut off.

Re: #featurerequest Request for Cover Image caption #featurerequest

Bruce,?
Following your idea, I already have a sticky wiki with text.? If I just edit the wiki page at
by adding a photo and allow text as a caption that shoukd work to make ny text more interesting and noticeable.? Is tgere a way I can make the photo smaller and use less space at the top of my pages?

Re: #featurerequest Request for Cover Image caption #featurerequest

perhaps instead of having the cover photo as a banner on every page and taking up so much space on our message page, we could have our group icon show at the top of the menu sidebar on every page.? Just the upper left corner, out of tge way of the messages. It would help personalize the group and make our group icon more visible.? ?
I have the sticky wiki page at the top of one of my groups as a banner,. Presently it is only a text statement of our mission statement, but using Bruce's suggestion, I may add the text to a photo and use that as the sticky wiki banner at the top of the pages.

Be aware that a photo or banner at the top of the page takes up space on the message page, so you may be scrolling more and turning pages more because of having it.

Thanks, Christopher! This solved my problem!

I have looked in my spam filter.

I looked at the MX record for jim-ratliff.name, and it looks like you're
using FastMail. Check your Backscatter spam settings [1]. If it's set to
discard, then the moderations messages aren't making it to you. The way that
sends messages needing moderator approval triggers FastMail's
backscatter filter, which is separate from it's spam filter.

If you've been getting a bunch of backscatter spam and don't want to change
the setting from discard, you can use a bit of custom Sieve code (under
Rules in settings) [2] to move the moderation messages before the
backscatter discard rule kicks in.

Put something like this before the "3. Sieve generated for spam protection"
section.

# -- begin Sieve code --

# moderation messages get identified as backscatter by FastMail.
# This runs before the backscatter rule and stops processing, so they end up
# in the right folder.
if allof(
?????address :is ["from"] ["[email protected]"]
???, header :matches :comparator "i;ascii-casemap" ["Subject"] ["Message Approval Needed*"]
??) {
???# Adjust this folder path as needed.
???fileinto "INBOX.Lists.Mod";
???stop;
}

# -- end Sieve code --

The wiki editor will force you to enter some text, but if you simply flank the image with a couple of periods that seems to satisfy the save dialog and doesn't look too objectionable.

Re: #featurerequest Request for Cover Image caption #featurerequest

Mike,

We copied the image.? Went into MS-PAINT (or image editor), picked a font and entered the text.? Located the text to look nice.? Saved the JPG.? Uploaded the image.? Sure, it's different than the way YG did it, but still gets the job done.

OK, figured it out on my own.? No help needed.

Re: #featurerequest Request for Cover Image caption #featurerequest

To add to Mike's thoughts about captioning the photo on the Home Page (which I believe would be a useful option to have) I would like to report that a number of members on my group when we moved from Y!G to GIO complained about no longer seeing the Masthead Photo on the Message page (which was the case on YGroups).

I've been wondering whether it would be possible or practical to have an option to also show our Home Page (Masthead) photo at the top of the Message page. Would seem to be a reasonably simple thing to do. Don't know how practical is its though from a programming standpont.

It would be interesting to hear other GMF members' thoughts about this.

Just curious . . .

Glad you figured it out.

i also changed forum settings so members cannot create new hashtags.
That will help, but groups.io system hashtags such as #chat, #poll and #cal-reminder will still be generated.

i find it an unlucky choice by the system creators to define a mute hashtag. It destroys the expected behaviour of a mailing list.?
Muting is not a function of the hashtag, it's a function of your subscription. If #chat was muted, it's because you muted it, and thus those emails did not go out to you. They should have been received by everyone else.

You can unmute a hashtag at?/mutedhashtags

Re: #featurerequest Request for Cover Image caption #featurerequest

In the absence of a cover image caption feature, you could always use a image editing program (e.g., ) to put the desired text right on the image before uploading it.

Download members list

I see this from the help page:

How Can I Download My Member List And Message Archive?

On Groups.io, navigate to your group. To download your complete member list, click on the Members tab under the Admin tab in the sidebar. From there you will be able to download your member list.

But I don't understand what happens when I do that.? I click download and then a new tab webpage opens with the data all separated with commas.? What I really want is a CSV file that I can open via Excel with everything separated out into columns.? I'm only familiar with doing it that way.? Will someone help instruct me with the steps to opening this up in Excel.? I tried to copy the data that came up on the webpage, made it a txt file, then tried to open it via Excel using any and all delimiters, but nothing worked.

What's the right way of doing this?

Re: Message was not distributed

Yes, the thread in question had a hashtag #chat.

i must say that I dislike hashtags in all messages. Can I as group owner ?get rid if all if them completely?

I want the mailing list to behave as traditionally as possible without any extra features, except ?allowing ?attachments.

Another possibility...did the second post have a hashtag??If so, check that hashtag's settings. It is possible to set up a hashtag such that it isn't emailed out ("Messages with this tag will not be emailed to the group."). If you replied via the web interface, the hashtag would have carried over and also not been sent.

It seems more likely that these two posts were filtered as spam, though.

This is normal behavior.?Until you approve at least one message, the subscriber remains on NuM, and all messages posted by that subscriber will be held, even if you've only set it up for one.

without any action on my side, the second message by same new member also appeared in the group messages in the web interface.
This is not normal. Although the subscriber was taken off NuM with your first approval, the second post should have remained in moderation. Could someone else -- perhaps a second Moderator -- have approved it? Check your Activity log.

It was however never emailed to the group members.
How do you know this? I could be that you're the only one who didn't get it.?

i replied to it in the web interface, and that reply was also not distrubuted via email to group members.
It sounds as if your own email provider has begun to reject (or at least throttle) group messages. Check your spam/junk folder to see if the posts landed there. Also check your own Email Delivery History (button at the top of your Subscription page). This should show you if groups.io is having any difficulties delivering messages to you.

Good luck,
Bruce
