Re: how to undo accidental merge

Well, I made it! I managed to split the confounded topic.
What was not clear to me is that when you split a topic starting from a certain message, the selected message brings along with it the following messages.
I wanted to split a topic made up of 2 messages (including the wrongly merged one) and each time I tried to split it I found myself with a new topic containing the same 2 messages.
Now everything's OK.
There is still hope for dumb group owners.
Thank you, everybody, for your patience and help!

Re: Yahoo Groups

sharpwitz,

Should I create 8 Groups on Groups.io or should I create one main
Group and 8 sub-groups?
That would depend entirely on the nature of the groups.

The key thing about a subgroup in Groups.io is that all of its members must first be members of the primary group. So if your eight groups are different people with different interests then gathering them as subgroups of a primary group would not make much sense.

On the other hand, some of your groups might be "natural" subgroups of another. For example, I have a primary group for my kid's PTA unit membership, with subgroups for the board, for teachers, etc.

A factor to consider is that there is no mechanism to transfer content from one (sub or primary) group to another. So once you transfer your Yahoo Group content to a (sub or primary) group there it stays.

I would rather pay for all the groups under one setting/account.
Your account is separate from the groups you create using your account. Each primary group has its own Upgrade page where you would pick which plan you want for that group (and its subgroups).

If I created 8 main Groups at Group.io, does that mean I pay $110/year
x 8 ?
If you use the Easy Group Transfer mechanism yes, in the first year. After that you may let any or all of them revert to Basic (free) groups.

If the content of one of your Yahoo groups is less important than the membership, you can invite the Yahoo group members to join a Basic group (free), or upgrade to Premium for one month ($10) to use Direct Add to import your list of member addresses.

It simply replaced the former triple dot button with something more descriptive and, being blue rather than pale grey, more visible.

It's applicable to Groups.io as a whole.? It was also discussed to the beta group, where a great many "features in flux," or new features get discussed.

Re: what's the purpose of the "show quoted text" button?

Angel,

what's the purpose of the "show quoted text" button?

Click it and see.

Hidden beneath that button (until you click it) is any quote of a prior message (or messages) that a member may have left in their reply. The intent is to hide such "clutter" in the display of a topic, yet keep it available in case you want or need to see it.

I've just noticed this in the past few days and am not finding any references to it being a new feature in this group nor the update one.?
?
It used to display as an ellipsis button (three dots), but a recent change gave it descriptive text instead. There's also been a more recent change to improve its accuracy in detecting quoted text as distinct from sig lines and other original text that may be below the quoted text.

Which is exactly what's expected and what I had described.? ?You then have to split off the rest of the messages into their own temporary topic name (TEMP2) after that.? Then you merge TEMP1 back into the topic where you want it (or, if you were trying to create a separate topic from it, just give it an appropriate name to begin with), and then merge TEMP2 back into the original topic where it belongs.

It's like splicing frames of film.? ?After you've cut out what you don't want to put elsewhere, you still have to rejoin the ends from the original reel.

Re: how to undo accidental merge

Starboy, thank you for your help.

1. I find the topic where the message I want to "split" is.
2. Then, I find the message I want inside that topic.
3. I open the message
4. Then I choose "split".
5. I give the message a new subject because this is like creating a new
topic.
The problem is that after selecting the message I want to move to a different topic and choosing "split" and devising a new temporary name for the topic, *all* messages are moved under the new topic name, not just the one I want to single out.

To be honest, I am a bit tired of unsuccessul attempts, so I'll just leave things as they are and definitely pay more attention next time.

Thank you for your encouragement,
Marina

Re: Sub groups

If I understand correctly, you created a group named PeterAstro.? You created a subgroup named Imagers.? If those are correct, then the email addresses that can be used to send to the groups will be:
[email protected] (main group)
[email protected] (main group)
[email protected] (subgroup)

Some members may still get confused because the return address will always show [email protected] for messages they receive from the main group, even though they've sent posts to [email protected]

You may also want to take a look at /g/GroupManagersForum/wiki/Why-use-a-Subgroup and /g/GroupManagersForum/wiki/Subgroups for additional information.

If you ever delete all of your subgroups, only the first address should be valid.? If I've misunderstood, please clarify.

Sub groups

Hi,

I'm in the process of setting up a group to replace a yahoo group that my local astronomy club has used for years for general internal communications.? We would like to have a sub group for the imagers amongst us so that those members not interested in imaging will not receive all the messages about guiding and stacking and such like.

I have experimented using my test group (PeterAstro) and have set up a subgroups successfully and transferred one of my members to it.? So far so good.

It also seems that I can still send messages to [email protected] and they do appear in the main subgroup but I just wanted to check that that will always be true.? It will be easier to explain to the members (not all of which are very computer literate!) that they can send to the original name with @groups.io after it in place of yahoogroups.com.? I didn't want to do it and then find it only worked because the system knew I was the owner.

Thanks.
Peter

Re: Internal Links on Wiki? (wikilinks)

In addition, you can "rename" any (internal/external) link to make it more friendly and/or add a mouse-hover title.? And make it open in a new window.

Ex - so an internal wiki page link:
/g/GroupManagersForum/wiki/Editing-a-message-or-topic

Might display in "English" on your page as:?
Editing your message
(hover on above to see the "title")

Re: Internal Links on Wiki? (wikilinks)

Larry,

(I have a reasonable awareness of Wiki page editing from Wikipedia.) ...
/ MediaWiki uses the pagelinks database table
Groups.io's Wiki is not based on MediaWiki.

Groups.io's page editor is pretty much WYSIWYG. The underlying markup is HTML, which you can access through the Source Code toolbar button.
/g/GroupManagersForum/wiki/Message-composition-tips-and-tricks

I am trying to add some internal links within a page (i.e. link to
another existing page).
Each page has a Permalink symbol at the top right (below the search box). You can copy that link's URL to create a link that you insert into another page's text via the Insert/Edit Link toolbar button. If the target page has a TOC at the top, you can copy the URLs of the TOC links to make an intra-page link.

Re: GMail issue : Was: subscribers on other lists are being moved to sub-groups under my group.

ken,

I think I have at least defined the problem. It seems to be a Google
Mail or gmail problem.
It is not generically a Gmail problem, else there'd be a lot of screaming about it (including from me). I think the symptom is being misunderstood.

Is he using an desktop app or mobile devise to read his Gmail messages?

All messages from lists on groups.io are shown under the *from
heading* as from my RepowerAndRegear list.
However the message headings do not show them as from the
RepowerAndRegear list, on the individual messages only the actual
(correct) list address is shown, the RepowerAndRegear does not appear
anywhere.
The weird thing here is that message From addresses in Groups.io are unique per posting member. So how his UI could be gathering all the different email addresses of various posting members and uniformly displaying your group name is mysterious.

This sounds like an interface option that is displaying a Contact name rather than the from address in the list. I've seen that feature on mobile apps. Have the member check his contact list to see if your group's name appears in his contact list, and delete any such entries.

If he's using Thunderbird, have him go to the Display tab in Thunderbird's Options dialog, and make sure the "Show only display name for people in my address book" box is unchecked.

Possibly related is that Yahoo groups mangle the From field of messages such that all member's posts arrive as being from the posting address of the group. This usually results in a different problem, where group messages are always displayed as coming from a particular member (regardless of who actually sent it) because that member's Display Name got associated with the group posting address in the user's Contact List.

At any rate, I don't think we've identified the problem here. But I'm increasingly convinced that it is neither a Groups.io nor a Gmail problem.

Re: GMail issue : Was: subscribers on other lists are being moved to sub-groups under my group.

Shal,
? I think I have at least defined the problem.? It seems to be a Google Mail or gmail problem.
The list member provided me a screen shot of his gmail listing of new messages,
All messages from lists on groups.io are shown under the from heading as from my RepowerAndRegear list.
However the message headings do not show them as from the RepowerAndRegear list,
on the individual messages only the actual (correct) list address is shown, the RepowerAndRegear does not appear anywhere.

It appears Google Mail is accumulating all messages from Groups.io and displaying them as From: [email protected]

Hopefully, This behavior by Gmail? can be corrected before it gets worse.

Re: you have reached the limit

Would be really helpful if this was stated clearly on the "Direct Add" page?
eg: "Direct Add lists over 20 will go through moderators, expect a short delay"

After all my testing and worrying about getting it right, adding 180 ppl, it was a bit stressful to get this message unexpectedly.
