Can a Groups.io be used as a For Sale sit?

A bunch of people have had a discussion group (a majordomo list) for 20 some years, and the Owner/Modersator
has fallen too ill to continue. They are interested in moving to Groups.io to some extent. Some of them suggested
usnet or Facebook but that will not satisfy them as well.
I am in this because most of the members are members of my main group.
The focus of the two bunches of us is different and that is a good thing.

?They currently have no Files, Photos, or Database features, but they do have a For Sale/Wanted feature.
That is a valuable feature because my group does not, and there is no other place to do any commerce in
our field of interest.

So is there a way to have a For Sale/Want ads within Groups.io?

Thanks,
Richard

I think what you want to do is UNSUBSCRIBE from the group, not DELETE YOUR ACCOUNT on Groups.io.

Deleting your account will remove you from every group you belong to AND also delete your account on Groups.io... unless you're the owner of any of the groups you subscribe to. Groups.io does not allow a group to become ownerless via unsubscription by the only Owner.

If you really do want to delete your Groups.io account, you need to replace yourself as owner of any groups you own... after which you can delete your account.

How Can I Delete My Account?

We're sorry to see you go, but we will be happy to delete your account. Note that we will not be able to delete your account if you are the only owner of at least one group. If that's the case, you should either transfer ownership to someone else, or delete the group before requesting that your account be deleted.

There was a discussion last year but the conclusion isn't clear to me. /g/GroupManagersForum/topic/22749972

The person who sets up the group cannot properly continue to be involved with discussions after his term is over.

Message Edit

Hello,

I am having a bit of a problem with the edit message feature. I tried to edit one of the messages of my group earlier this evening and when I clicked on Save and Send to Group it did nothing. If I clicked Save and Don't Send it saved the updates. Is there something I'm doing wrong?

Thanks,

I've had an update from Mark today on this. He confirmed that the notifications are not being sent but does not have an ETA for a fix.

See?/g/GroupManagersForum/wiki/Managing-Attachments%2C-Files-and-Photos,?under the section "How can the actual storage used be checked?"

To my knowledge, accounts have no storage quota, only groups.

Are Files and Photos the only data users that count towards the account limit?

No. It means the group/subgroup has been locked, making it read-only.

This function is only available in Premium groups (see /static/pricing).?

Does activating the "locked group" message end the ability of the group owner / moderators to approve a non-member post?
Not by itself. At the same time, if?you don't have a Premium/Enterprise group, or have no plans to ever lock your group, there is little reason to set up a corresponding Member Notice, much less make it Active.?

[A case could be made that displaying the Locked Group option among the Member Notice types in a group that is not Premium is a bug. But so would be Direct Add; or for that matter, Pending Subscription in a non-Restricted group.]

Is activation of the "locked group" notice incompatible with allowing non-subscribers to post? "Allow Non Subscribers to Post
Posts by non-subscribers will be moderated, instead of rejected."
Once you actually lock the group, no one will be able to post, regardless of subscription status.

At the very bottom of the Settings page, those having a Premium group should find a baby-blue "Lock Group" button. The way I read it, the corresponding Member Notice is sent in reply if someone attempts to post to the group while it is locked.

See?/g/updates/message/40. This feature has received no discussion in either GMF or beta, so this brief, one-sentence blurb is pretty much all we have on the topic.

Bruce?

Re: Changing owners #owner #groupowner

Frances,

If someone else is willing to be promoted to Owner, can the originator of the group then totally leave?

Yes. Owners are equal in every way, there's nothing special about the owner that happened to create the group.

The key phrase in that help text is "only owner". As long as there's another owner in the group other owners can leave it.

I understand that non-member posts would have to be moderated. And the owner / moderators would receive email notification of this.

Another Photo Album issue.

This is bizarre!

I have just approved a new member to our group. ?Then decided to look at a photo album to see if I could ascribe correct ownership to it. ? To my great surprise and concern, it had been done (was blank last week) with the name of the very recently approved member. ?All the ten images within the album had the same, incorrect, name.

What goes on? ?Any ideas?

Locked group and member notices #lock #membernotices

I see in Member Notices in Settings there is one for Locked Group.

I don't see the term in the official help document or in the GMF wiki.?Does it mean a group with restricted membership?

I was wondering whether a restricted membership group could use this an auto-reply for email from non-group members.
This is assuming that the group allows non-group members to send messages (with moderation).?

Thanks!

Frances

A Board of Directors is interested in setting up a group.

The original owner will wish to replace themselves next year with someone from the new Board.?

So I just checked with the analyser (thanks a lot for that link, by the way), and thre was an 11 hour delay from web01.groups.io to ldn-srv1.filteredmx.net. The latter I am convinced is Kualo¡¯s spam filter, but I don¡¯t get why they would delay it. Either deliver or not¡it¡¯s not a short message by the way, some of these are 500 ¨C 2000 words posts.

I¡¯ll get in touch with Kualo (who hosts sanverse.net), and see what they are playing at, especially since I¡¯ve been using io groups for years without issues.

?

Thanks for the support and information.

Re: email issues

Missy,

I've been having some problems with my io groups over the past few days. I either receive the email messages late, or not at all, in random order, sometimes immediately after the message was posted, sometimes several hours later, sometimes not at all.

Except for the "sometimes not at all", this symptom sounds like what happens when your email service is using greylisting to test whether the sender is a spambot or not.

Possibly there's some other connection problem between Groups.io and your email service, but ultimately each message should either be delivered or be rejected (reported as "bounced"). It is very bad form if your email service accepts a message from a sender and then drops it in a black hole instead of delivering it to either your Inbox or your Spam folder. The "blackhole" treatment is supposed to be reserved for senders the service is quite certain are illegitimate (an ip address with no DNS record as a mail server, for example).

I have checked whether my email address is bouncing - it's not.

Which means that Groups.io has been able to connect to your service, and your service has been accepting the deliveries.

Any ideas??

Check with your email service to see if there's any way that Groups.io's outbound server (IP address 66.175.222.12) can be "whitelisted" or otherwise made exempt from whatever they may be doing that delays delivery.

message from subgroup goes to parent

I have a main group and three subgroups. For one of the subgroups, a message generated goes out to the subgroup, only, as it should. For one of the other subgroups, however, the message often does not go anywhere (it shows as a valid message, but no one receives it in email), and sometimes get posted as pending in the parent group. Neither of these seem correct to me. The main group is??the subgroup that works is??and the subgroup that doesn't work is?. Can anyone suggest what to check and correct?

Re: gMail and Aliases

OK, for the benefit of anyone who encounters a similar problem in the future, here's how I fixed things:

On gmail's end, I needed to change the outgoing smtp for my personal domain's email address to one associated with the service my personal domain runs through. It didn't seem to matter whether this email address was used "as an alias" or not. Apparently on gmail's end, acting as an alias refers to how incoming mail is treated (acting as an inbox for that account), and then separately, there's an outgoing mail setting that can be set independent of being an alias or not. So, when you add an account to "send mail as" in gmail, you could have a few different configurations that all seem to "work" when you're using gmail, but interact a little differently with the outside world.

Now that my personal domain's email address has its own, non-gmail, outgoing smtp set, emails that I "Send as" that personal domain email through gmail are in fact recognized as "coming from" that domain, and therefore that particular groups.io account. I did not need to make any setting changes in groups.io for this, only in gmail. (For example, I don't have any aliases specified in any groups.io accounts.)

Thanks for your help, Shal!
