Honoring original Message-IDs in reflected messages

I'm evaluating Groups.io as a possible platform for TianoCore:

One issue that we've come up with is in regards to message threading,
specifically how the Message-ID seems to be changed for some reflected
emails.

I believe the issue I'm seeing is discussed here:

/g/GroupManagersForum/message/8420

If I select "I always want copies of my own emails" in my user
preferences, it does indeed send me messages, which is good. :)

However, as mentioned in the above thread, Groups.io seems to be
changing the Message-ID field. For example, if I send a message to the
list and CC another list member, then compare message IDs I see:

Message-ID from CC'd member: <SOME_HASH@EMAIL-DOMAIN>
Message-ID from reflected email: <[email protected]>

This might be great for gmail users, but for those MUAs that actually
honor proper threading, this feature breaks threading.

Is there a way to stop groups.io from altering the Message-ID in
reflected emails?

Cheers,
Stephano

Thank you Gerald for the suggestion. ?However, it¡¯s something I regularly do (Firefox 64 on Windows 10)

Hi All,

Thanks for the information, before posting I'd used the FAQ and searched for the answer to no avail.

"See Admin>Upgrade for your actual usage" - Ah that's why I couldn't find the total usage anywhere, it's not where I'd expected it to be :-)

That's been a great help, so thanks again to all who replied.

Regards,

Martin

Can I add that if you click on the Edited tag, you get a screen where you can compare revisions to a message.? You also get an entry in the activity log when a message has been edited.

Thanks Andy. I thought it may be just me

You are correct. I believe the reason is that such action would adversely affect database relationships with the associated post in the message archive.

You can, however, delete a photo from Emailed Photos. The affected email message will afterward display an "edited" tag.

Re: Can a Groups.io be used as a For Sale sit?

We have a subgroup which is for selling items. ?People can opt-into the subgroup and post an?item for sale, including pictures if wanted. ?People then contact the individual privately for completing the transaction. ?It does not have a way to deal with the financial side of the sale, it just puts sellers and buyers in touch with each other.?

Peace,
Tom

This is on the TODO list as a possibility, but isn't a high priority.? https://trello.com/c/6Wb7a5lZ/256-marketplace-type-section

For now, you'd could upload photos, then create the ad with a link to them, or embed photos in the message.

On a couple of my groups, we do have things for sale now and then.? I created the hashtag #ForSale with settings that cause replies to me moderated, as well as deleting the topic after 30 days.? You could also use the property to cause replies to go to the originator.? There are Freecycle type groups that do this regularly.? If photos weren't embedded, they'd need to be deleted manually.

No,
1 to 4 pictures of "vehicle" along with text describing condition, extras, price, and the contact information.
Sort of like a minor version of e-bay but available only to Group members and not really an auction site. Deals are made between seller and buyer. The site does not get involved with that. It just a place to list equipment and parts to others interested.

Re: Changing owners #owner #groupowner

I think I would change the properties of the original owners who are on the board of directors.? ?I am guessing that the owners will remain in the group but would leave their designated 'control' as owner of the group when the time served as a board member ends.

Re: Unable to upload files #files

Hi Martin,
The 'upload file' button is greyed out.
The upload button is greyed out when you have reached your storage limit.? You should get a notification when you are at 80% and 100% of your limit but that feature is not working at present.? See /g/GroupManagersForum/message/15387 for more details.

Storage usage overview is shown in Admin > Billing for a main group or Admin > Usage for a subgroup.

All files, photos, and attachments count against your limit. See Admin>Upgrade for your actual usage.

This has only recently happened. It has previously worked OK, and I have not changed any settings.

I hadn't thought to check the Upgrade page to check on current data usage.? That's very helpful.?

Do you mean a feature where users are presented with a form that they can fill in with only the required information, so that it is then posted to the mailing list in a specific format?

Re: message from subgroup goes to parent

STAR,

I looked at the settings to see if there is an option that causes
messages to NOT be sent to the list, but I see no such option.
There isn't one. There is a hashtag option that can do that, but presumably you'd know if you were using that.

Also, each member of the subgroup has a Subscription page, independent of the main group, and the member's subscription could be set to "No Email", or the member's Advanced Preferences could be set to "Following Only".

And of course, members email services may have Spam filters that can redirect messages away from their Inbox.

Have a look at the Email Delivery History (via the Members list) for one of the subgroup members. The latest posting in the subgroup should be listed in either "Most Recent Successful" or "Most Recent Unsuccessful". It may not appear immediately, depending on how long the message is being retried, but ultimately you should be able to determine whether Groups.io believes it sent the message to that member.

Messages sent from outside seem to be handled correctly, but messages
generated on the website are not.

Still mystified.
Me too.

I don't know of any systematic difference between the way a message generated by New Topic or Reply is handled, versus one that was sent in by email. Both go through the same mechanisms for moderation and distribution.

There are differences in the message headers produced, of course, reflecting the different origin. The Display Name in the From may be different, as well as the Message-ID and various X- fields relating to the origin of the message.

Re: message from subgroup goes to parent

Thank you for your reply. It does not explain the issue. I double checked. I originally created the message while in the subgroup, and it shows as a message in the subgroup message stream, but groups.io sent (or placed, not sure) the message into the parent group. It was not sent to any of the members. I looked at the gmail header in the message that was sent from the parent group, and there is no mention of the subgroup in the header. I tested it again, just to make sure that I was not in the parent group when I thought I was in the subgroup, with the result that the message shows in the message stream but was never sent anywhere, to the members list or to the parent group. I looked at the settings to see if there is an option that causes messages to NOT be sent to the list, but I see no such option.

I control both the owner email and am a member of the parent and subgroup under a different email address, and I've used both to test things. Messages sent from outside seem to be handled correctly, but messages generated on the website are not.

Still mystified.

Re: message from subgroup goes to parent

STAR,

For one of the other subgroups, however, the message often does not go
anywhere (it shows as a valid message, but no one receives it in
email), and sometimes get posted as pending in the parent group.
Neither of these seem correct to me.
Neither is correct. Assuming the members of that subgroup are set to receive messages, and that the message doesn't have any special hashtags, it should be emailed to the subgroup members. It should not post in the parent group unless someone forwarded it there.

One factor that sometimes confounds Gmail users is that Gmail hides your own message on return from the group, so it can be misleading to post to an email list and then try to check that you receive it back. Groups.io has a work-around to this problem, in your Account set "I always want copies of my own emails".

Can anyone suggest what to check and correct?
For messages that "aren't sent" from ActionTeam I'd cross-check using more than one subscribed address - one to post a message and the other to check for receipt.

With an example in hand of a message which was posted to ActionTeam that landed in the main group's Pending I'd use the View Source link to have a careful look at the messages' header. That should tell the story of how it came to arrive there.
