A number of things could be in play. Some providers (cox.net, rr/spectrum/charter) have a history of "throttling back" and delaying groups.io message delivery. I've also found that really short, "me too" messages are more likely to get held up and/or diverted to spam.?

The next time you get a delayed message, open the message header and paste it into the analyzer found at??. This will show where your messages are getting held up, and for how long...if it's your own provider then you will have a firm basis for a complaint to sanverse.net.
