In that case, you should probably modify the group custom footer as Bruce mentioned to include the link.

Re: Contact Group Owner Link for Digests

Thanks, Bruce.? If the link is on the list home page, but the list member cannot figure out how to sign into Groups.io, not sure that's very helpful. I know those links are active on a list's home page, even if you're not signed in, but some/many of my list members are computer-challenged enough not to figure out how to search for our list while not signed into Groups.io.? In my mind, this is a miss.? The footer on the digest really should mirror the footer on an individual email.? That way, Digest members will have the same footer links as someone on Individual Emails.?

Two subgroups, same name? #subgroups #messages

Alex Earl

As you can see in the screenshot below, my Main Group was renamed to "[email protected]", but I apparently already had a subgroup with the same name. Is it possible to merge the subgroup into the Main Group so that I can delete the subgroup but retain the messages and move anyone who is only subscribed to the subgroup into the Main Group?

You can also delete the photo direct from the album should you so choose; Delete is another of the tabs under the photo. I know deleting the message sends a notification to its originator; at the moment I don't know if simply deleting the photo does as well.
Update; deleting the photo (rather than its parent message) does not delete the message, but leaves it there in a sort of orphan state. Not to be recommended IMHO.

I am also a bit uncertain about any notification to the originating member; at the moment there doesn't appear to be any but further testing is required on my part.

questions about bouncing

Holly

Have looked at this group's wiki, the groups.io wiki, and the help group wiki (doesn't exist), plus searched the emails in these groups, but haven't found the answers to my questions, so asking here.

I sent bounce probes to each bouncing member (most are Charter but one Charter member isn't bouncing - reason for bounce, 421 impin008.msg.chrl.nc.charter.net cmsmtp ESMTP server not available AUP#I-1300). I'm not clear on:

a) what is sent in a bounce probe

b) whether the member would see anything from the bounce probe - for example, a link to confirm delivery in the probe. I'm guessing the member doesn't see anything or have anything to respond to, that it's just looking for the email service's response.

c) at what point is an email sent to the member to confirm the membership is still valid? Is it only after the 15 days of grace period, assuming the bounce probes stop bouncing to start that period?

d) is there a way to be copied via email with the bounce probe's result?

I told the bouncing members I'd sent a probe, but I don't know what will happen after that (other than, as of just a couple minutes later, they've already bounced again).

In addition, a suggestion - please let me know if it should be posted on the beta group: When checking the bounce status of a given member, then clicking the "Members" button at the top of that member's status page, I assumed it would return me to the bounce page (so I can continue working on status issues), but instead it returns me to my full member list. Is this a glitch or is there a reason for this, requiring another click to get to the next bouncing member?

I saw an email with a similar request in the beta group - in that case, the person asked to be returned to the page where the owner/moderator started from when making a change to an individual member. My group is quite small at 92 members, but I'd agree with that idea as well. I have changed my preference to 100 per page, but of course if I'm not returned to the page I was on, that's moot.

And another suggestion - it would be nice to be able to multi-select bouncing members to check bounce-probe status, instead of checking them all individually. I only have 5 members I want to check, but even so it adds up to a lot more time than it needs to.

I *think* that's it for questions - but if there's something I've missed, like an online resource I don't mention above or a common question related to bouncing, please let me know.

Thanks much!

Holly

questions about group moderation/administrator

Hello,
I was wondering if someone sends an email to the [email protected] address, do you receive it? What about the [email protected] address? owner meaning your group name. One more thing. How do you send a notice to all the members at once using the notices saved in the settings?

pending members issue

our group has an automatic questionnaire that is sent out, upon a new member applying for membership to the group. something has changed & pending members are no longer being sent that questionnaire. i have emailed mark & the support team but so far no reply. this is unusual, i customarily get a reply almost immediately, but always within 24 hrs. almost at the 48 hrs mark now & nada¡has something changed with regard to support levels? yes, my group is a premium one.

i have another group & it is still working properly vis a vis the questionnaire.

New owner

Just setting up a new group after our dissatisfaction with Yahoo Groups grew untenable!

Everything is looking good but have 2 questions at the moment.
  1. When a new file is uploaded is it possible to set up an automatic announcement to every member?
  2. Has anyone any advice of how I get the members from the old Yahoo Group to the new group other than emailing all members and giving them the link to the group.io site? Some of our members are elderly or not regular computer users and if I can get the transfer as frictionless as possible it would be a bonus.
Thanks in advance.

That is well beyond my IT skills, but it is good to know I am not missing something obvious.

I will soldier on, copying back and forth the Word. I am getting there slowly.

Thanks for your help and reassurance.

For some reason, the html editor for the home page in Settings does not behave the same way as the one in the message editor, and in fact is so misbehaved as to be almost unusable. You might be better served working with the raw html. To do so, click the "hamburger" icon at far right to open the advanced toolbar, then the angle brackets at far right to pop up the html in a dialog box.

Even then, you may have to insert some whitespace into it to get it readable enough to work with. Note also that a lot of constructs will still be stripped when you save. Javascript and iframes, for example, cannot be placed in your home page. The conjecture is that they could serve as a vector for malware, but I've seen a lot of totally benign inline styles like "float:right" get stripped, too.

Good luck,
Bruce

Re: Time Zone #date-time-display

Bucky,

How can I update our time zone?

Groups don't have time zones, members do. Also, calendar events do.

Set your timezone via the Preferences page in your Account. That will control how times are displayed for you on Groups.io's web pages.

You can preset a default timezone for new members joining your group via the Default Sub Settings tab of your group's Settings page. Changing this will not affect existing members.

Yes, Susie. This just happened after Mark fixed it the last time Yahoo did this.

You could wait. Or you could start your group in Groups.io without a migration. It really depends on how important the message archive on YahooGroups is to you.

If you started a new group, you can do a 1-month premium subscription so that you can invite all of your members.
/static/pricing
This would allow you to directly add members, rather than just invite members.

I am not sure about whether you are able to export your message archive from Yahoo yourself. Then import it in some way (files, database, wiki) to Groups.io

Not as easy as the transfer.

Frances

If Susie (sbcurrie) has a complete or partial archive of the messages in her group in an email folder (assuming incoming email was sorted and saved to folders as specified according to an email filter)
on her own computer then you have a Unix mailbox file for that Yahoo group. This is fairly portable data. I have dealt with transfer of a Yahoo group three times so far, in the past. In one instance I sent the admin of our Mailman list host and he integrated that archive into my Mailman message archive, seamlessly. Maybe could do the same thing? for you with your new group. In the second instance I ftp'd the Yahoo message archive contained my Unix mailbox file into my website using my shell account then ran hypermail or mhonarc on the file to create a mail to html archive for public viewing. So, last resort if you have a Linux shell account on some website (many web hosts offer this) then you can at least put the old Yahoo archive online somewhere as an archive viewable externally from your message archive. Not all email readers create these Unix mailbox files (its just a big text file with concatenated messages that has headers a mail2html converter can use to create an html archive). Thunderbird and Claws do create these files, easily accessable. A Mailman list message archive creates these files for download and reading in a text editor or post processing with a converter. It it might be possible that Gmail also creates them for download. Appending and integrating email folder files into a list would be a nice feature which they could charge for or offer in their premium package.

The +owner address is not there for a digest, but does appear on the group Home page.?

Footers have been a topic of much discussion (most recently ) and are a compromise between providing necessary links vs cluttering up every message. This is especially true of plain-text message delivery, in which each URL is a fairly long string of text that may or may not be "linkified" by the recipient's email client.

See?/g/GroupManagersForum/wiki/Footers?for details on what links are present in footers for the various message types and how the group settings affect them. You also have the option to insert information of this nature in your group's custom footer (see Admin>Message Formatting>Message Footer).

Hope this helps,

Can anyone tell me if it is anywhere in a Digest??? This is pretty important, as occasionally, a list member can't get signed in, they forget how to request the link to their Account page (even though it's well described on the Log In page - I have some computer challenged list members), and it would be great if Digest list members would have that link available so they could contact the list mods off the list to request assistance.

The listed subscription address appears to be wrong/redundant. If you have subgroups, the subscription address for the main group is [email protected]. If you do not have subgroups, it would be [email protected], without the subdomain. Putting lrwg in both places is an error.

When in doubt, check the Home page of the group/subgroup in question for the correct subscription address.

Hope this helps,

Issue with subscription

I have had a potential member who said they've emailed my subscription adress (lrwg+subscribe@lrwg.groups.io) and hasn't? had an automated response (inc in spam folder). I've just tried from both?my Yahoo and gmail accounts and Gmail worked but my Yahoo is yet to get a response. Is there a known issue with it?

Thanks

Chris

Re: Support

It can depend on what the request is.? I've had some answered within a few hours, but others have 'fallen through the cracks' for a few weeks.? I just wait until I hear back since everything else works so well! ;>)? In some cases, the response will be to ask on this group.

Received from Bruce Bowman at 1/30/2019 08:05 PM UTC:

If trying to do this via email, I suspect it might depend on the behavior of the client you are using, and whether it recognizes Apple MOV files as a valid file extension.

Possibly, but I'd hope not. The key to whether or not something is a URL (and should be linkified) should be the part; the extension shouldn't matter. If a recognized extension were required, then links to a website subdirectory with no specific file included wouldn't be linkified.

As far as the link posted by the OP wrapping on the screen... It doesn't wrap when I read the original post on Groups.io or in my home email client. Whether it wraps seems to depend entirely on how wide the screen is.
