Re: iPhone App???

I will let shall point you to the direction of the messages that were discussed about having an app for the site, and it is on the to do list. But it hasn't been discussed in a while. However, he does have a mobile site. Your browser should take you there whenever you visit the site with your iPhone.

Does anyone here know whether an iPhone App for Groups.io is on the Wish List or, if not, how to get that added? Seems like a good idea for Groups.io.

Oy veh!

Legal advice followed by a disclaimer of not being a lawyer and it not being legal advice.

Why bother when all it does is spread FUD - Fear, Uncertainty and Doubt.

Outside the realm of politics there are no legal requirements for ACCEPTING donations. The legal requirements applicable to a business like Groups.io involve how they are accounted for once received... and that is, quite frankly, none of our business. All you accomplish with legal opinions followed by a disclaimer saying you aren't a lawyer is to spread FUD - fear, uncertainty and doubt.

Why would it not be legally possible to accept doanations nation-wide? They aren't taxable by the states the donors live in like payments for goods or services rendered are, so state boundaries aren't a consideration. So where's the problem?

Internationally? Who cares what the regulations in Whatchamacallitstan? They apply to the donor, not to the

It would be trivial to implement.
Implementing the code is trivial.

Complying with the legal requirements to accept donations is fairly
complex. As a for-profit, I doubt that it would be legally possible to
accept donations nation-wide, let alone internationally.

This is not legal advice.

Re: How best to educate about the 'Removed for SPAM' problem

Duane,

I think it's rather ironic that Yahoo is one of the main enforcers of
the FBL policy when it comes to receiving emails, but don't seem to
honor it when sending them.
I think that if there were still any development going on at Yahoo Groups then the Yahoo Mail team would by now have forced Groups to deal with Y!Mail's FBL.

I can't be certain what Y!Groups would have done about it, but they'd have to do something or else continue with the status-quo: Y!Groups' messages landing in the Spam folder or being rejected.

Re: How best to educate about the 'Removed for SPAM' problem

Bob,

They have no idea how to access their spam folder or successfully move
a message out of the spam/trash folder.
Then it behooves them to choose an email service with an exceptionally accurate spam filter. As Bill said, it is likely that they'll miss other important messages, not just those from your group, that went to their spam folder.

They don¡¯t need to be a mechanic to drive their car.
No, but they do need to know where the steering wheel, turn signals, parking brake, and other vital controls are. In email systems being aware of the Spam folder and its contents is vital - unless your use a service with a mythical "perfect" filter.

Coming from years on Yahoo, this policy is a HUGE step backwards for
my group.
And the flip side is that one of the most common complaints about Yahoo Groups is the delays and non-delivery of messages. That's probably not entirely a coincidence - even Yahoo Mail has been cited as frequently putting Yahoo Group messages into the spam folder.

Re: iPhone App???

Milt

Don¡¯t know about an app but I find I can do Settings changes etc using my iPhone. I am using the latest iOS.
Of course, moderating is simple -a reply email or if needed, go to the message on the homepage to edit.

The only thing I wish for (or st least I can think of) is an easy way to put in hashtags through email. (Ie, accessing the list). Maybe that would be a feature with an app.

Re: Chat limits?

To the best of my knowledge, there is no limit (other than the number of members in a group ;>)? I'd do a test chat well in advance to see what, if any, problems you might run into before attempting to use it for a 'real' meeting.

I just did a test in one of my groups.? I created a hashtag that was to delete the thread/topic after 1 hour, then added it to an old thread.? It didn't even take a full hour.? According to the Activity Log, 4 minutes later the thread was deleted due to an expired hashtag.? I think this is as close as we can get to the 'no archives' option.? The biggest concern I can see is that you'd need to make sure the hashtag is used on all threads.? Or you could go in and manually delete the threads any time.

There should be no messages on the group Home page, only the activity summary.? You may be a bit confused because when you choose one of your groups from the Your Groups list, it takes you to the Topics view of that group, not the home page.

Re: Question Please

Shal wrote this not long ago:

In most email list services there's a central store of all the prior message. Sometimes called an archive, the usual intent is to have a quasi-permanent repository of the past messages. So one option for you is to simply ignore the old messages, as they aren't counted against any quota for your group.
?
If you feel that the messages are ephemeral and should be deleted there is a "Topic Duration" hashtag option that will let you set a limit after which the topic is automatically deleted. Two problems with that for your purpose:
?
o It applies to whole topics, not individual messages.
o You have to get the hashtag onto every topic.
?
You can go in and edit each new topic to add the hashtag. I don't know what happens if you edit an old topic and add a hashtag with a limit, maybe nothing if the topic is already older than the specified limit.

Note that your message archive doesn't count against your?quota.
In the Pricing page on the bottom of the page, it says:

The following are counted towards the storage limits for your group:

  • Files
  • Photos
  • Images in databases
  • Images in wiki pages
  • Message attachments

Messages themselves are not counted towards the storage limits, only any attachments.

Until the FBL goes away, if ever, sites like Groups.io will need to honor it or face blacklisting from email services.? It's also unnerving that Yahoo (and others) will decide that an email is spam, them use their seemingly arbitrary decision to send anything from that source to the spam folder.? The main alternatives for now are to get folks to check for (possibly mislabeled) spam or change email providers to one that doesn't use FBL.? Neither is a simple operation, but both work very well in most cases.

The "Email when a member joins/leaves this group" checkbox is in the
Notifications section on each mod/owner's Subscription page. Also their
page you can access through the Members list.

Chat limits?

Is there a maximum number of people that can be in the chat at once?

We have an event coming up next year and may use the chat function for some of our virtual gatherings.? Was wondering if there is a maximum number of people that can be in the chat function at the same time.

Thanks!

Groups.io site updates #changelog

Hi all,

This week's change log:

Feel free to reply to this topic if you'd like to comment on the
changes. Or better yet, if you expect a lot of discussion start a new
topic (or rejoin an existing one) about a specific change.

NEW/TESTING: You can define a Display Template to specify how database
tables are displayed. This is in limited testing for the moment.
This might be interesting. Anyone here in the limited test?

Comments about these others are also welcome:

NEW: Photo search.
CHANGE: Cleaned up and modernized all the photos pages.
CHANGE: Ignore any autoreply headers if the message is to an email
integration (normally we would drop those messages).
BUGFIX: Fixed the email address and URL in the bounce message for
messages sent to enterprise groups where you are not subscribed.
NEW: New database column type 'HTML Paragraph'.
SYSADMIN: Replaced a badly behaving webserver.
SYSADMIN: Updated nsqd on all machines.
INTERNAL: More infrastructure work to make it easier to bring up new
machine instances.
CHANGE: Cap images at a max of 10k per side, regardless of group
setting.

Please call out any you find significant.
