Re: Dumb Question of day -- How do I direct people to join my new group?
J_Catlady
1. You can send anyone an invitation using the invite function?
OR 2. You can send someone a link to your home page, where they can join (or apply for membership, if your group is restricted) - that address is /g/group-name OR 3. You can direct-add the person, using the Direct Add function, if your group is premium, as Bruce notes. -- J |
Re: Length of Group description in Groups Directory
#suggestion
Marina, I'm not sure it's a "problem".? I think this is simply how Mark has coded a search result to display (ie, "display first 120 characters in search results from group description").? When I use the Search function, and search using any old key word, all the search results display exactly the same as you've described:? About 1 1/2 lines are displayed from each group's main page description.? In fact, they are all truncated or cut off at the same number of characters.? So, I think is is just "how it is".? I don't think this is an issue, frankly.? If someone is interested in finding out more, and reading the full list's description, they would just click on that search result.? And, you're correct about the bolded word or words:? That word or words are bolded because they represent your search word(s).? However, I think what WOULD be helpful in the Search results would to add three periods at the end of the truncation, to indicate "there's more of a description", or that the description is, indeed, truncated.? Easy coding string to add, so maybe something to suggest on the Beta forum??

Re: Questionnaire at what subscription step?
J_Catlady
Victoria, Is your group set to "Restricted Membership"? That's the first step. Otherwise, anyone can join and membership doesn't require approval. Assuming that's set correctly, then go into Settings -- > Member Notices --> create new notice and select "Pending Subscription" from the dropdown menu. Create the message that you want to be automatically sent when someone requests membership. You would include your questionnaire there. Backing up my groups
I worked in IT for many years and always believed in the "belt and braces" approach to backup. I'm sure you guys keep backups, but against the horrid possibility that something dire goes wrong, I'd like to be able to take my own backup of the groups that I own (all messages, attachments, files, photos etc. etc.).
So what mechanisms are available to allow this? Thanks David |
picture of cat instead of group home page?
Is anyone else seeing a picture of a cat instead of their group web site? The Home page of one of my groups shows a picture of a kitten. I can get to the conversations and thus to the control menu by using the direct link under Your Groups, but I can't access the Home page. It seems to be only one of my groups. The message on the page says,
We're currently undergoing maintenance. We will be back up by 1AM Pacific Time (9AM UTC). In the mean time, here is a picture of Feynman, one of the Groups.io kittens (2 of 4) It has been this way since at least yesterday evening, ~18 hours. Jonathan |
Re: Can't get to my group site
Hi Dain, I may be able to help here because I've been blocked by Norton and it won't let you bypass the block. I've also found no way to whitelist sites in Norton. As per earlier messages, I spent a couple of hours with Norton Support and they had no answer but said they would elevate the problem to a higher level, but I'm not holding my breath.

Re: Wiki Search?
#notworking
Thanks, Bill, but that¡¯s not an issue. No copy/paste, clean new entry, no dummy blanks (intended or otherwise). I¡¯ve sent a support request to Mark. It¡¯s only this one particular group (thanks to you guys replying to my question). I own other groups and they are having no problems.?
It does seem to have started, we think, around the outage the other day (can¡¯t sweat to it but had no prior complaints). Everything else in this particular wiki is working: links, creating, editing, deleting. Tried creating a new page, that didn¡¯t return either. Tried adding an edit to existing page, nada. I¡¯ve logged out, closed programs, cleared all temp cache files, cookies, powered down, started over - and on multiple devices. Can¡¯t think of anything else to try (even as quirkycrazy as it may seem).? Just plain stumped (and frustrated). Ginny |
Re: Transfer Group from Yahoo
Judy -- One of the biggest pitfalls we encountered were Yahoo group members who were set to "no email." We had a difficult time notifying them of the migration, and despite our best efforts some of them were blind-sided. Since there's no reliable way to contact them via the Yahoo group, you may have to capture their email address and send them a note manually. To mitigate this, I wanted to put up a new banner (i.e.: "cover image") that notifies anyone visiting the Yahoo group of our move, giving the new groups.io URL. Yahoo has repeatedly frustrated my efforts to do this.
You can also plan to have a number of members start to bounce emails after the transfer completes, due either to dead email addresses among your Yahoo records or recipient mail servers that for some reason think mail coming from groups.io as spam. The latter can be a particular problem as some will be automatically unsubbed from the group and have to be re-added. Anyone who had to "white list" Yahoo to get their group mail will likely have to do so with groups.io as well. Hotmail in particular seems troublesome in this regard. That said, this can also be useful to eliminate some of the deadwood users that seem to accumulate over time. In our two migrations, members, files and messages seemed to transfer well. Photos are more troublesome and you can expect to lose a third to a half of them...for no other reason than the Yahoo servers are balky. Be advised the files attachments to messages -- photos or otherwise -- are NOT migrated. This includes any photos appearing in the "Photostream." Finally, be advised that many groups are abandoning Yahoo right now and it may take awhile (a week or more) for the transfer agent to get around to you. The inability to provide a firm date to your members as to when the migration will actually take place can also be mildly frustrating. That's my experience. Hope this helps! Bruce |
File type for Direct Add
Hi,
I'm about to use the Direct Add feature to add a large list of members. I understand the required format for the name, email address, and subscription preference. What file types can I use for the document upload? I assume a text file works, but can I upload an Excel file? A CSV? A rich text document? How about a PDF? Thanks for any guidance :-) Marla |
Re: Questionnaire at what subscription step?
¿ªÔÆÌåÓýJanet, ? my problem is that I do not know what you mean by ¡°pending subscription notice¡±. I do not get such a message. Instead I get a message that a member has joined already, even though I didn?t actually allow him to subscribe. ? So when is the time to send the questionnaire? ? Sorry if my questions sound stupid¡ ? Victoria ? |

Groups.io site updates - transfer progress for prior requests?
Is this 'track the progress of transfers' available ONLY to new transfers or in my case--I requested the transfer of my group on the 20th--can I check the progress of my transfer? If so, where do I go to CHECK the progress. Thanks.

This is the headliner, at least for anyone getting ready to transfer a Yahoo Group. I happened across it shortly after it went live, and "you heard it here first"! Alas, it doesn't tell you where you are in the queue, which may still be several days long, but at least you have confirmation that your request was entered and your "Go" was received. > NEW: There's now a status page for the service, at > This is nice.
