Re: Site Updates - How Does He Do It! #testimonials

Having been in IT for over 40 years, this is my take on "how does he do it?" and "do we care that it's only Mark?"...
  • Mark does not have to go to a half dozen meetings everyday to tell other people what he's doing and hear others bitch about what they are doing.
  • Mark obviously has a well defined (well greased) development environment where it's easy to focus on a specific functional area, modify/test changes, and push those changes out to the running site.? (I'd love to look over his shoulder for a while...)
  • Mark obviously has a lot of experience with deploying and maintaining a set of servers that work together to make groups.io work.
  • Mark takes pride in "his baby" and is committed to having it work "right".
  • Mark commented somewhere that the site was paying for itself.

So do we care?
  • Well, yes and no.? If something were to happen to Mark, the site would continue as is, at least for a while.
  • If I'm losing sleep worrying about the longevity of groups.io, I'd want to know what the business continuity plan is if Mark is incapacitated.
  • As we've seen with Yahoo and other group sites, a group needs its own contingency plan too.

Anyway, I'm not losing any sleep and I have backups of key info from my groups.? But I am curious what Mark's continuity plan is.

Re: Why use hashtags in a group? #hashtags

Nancy in Renton

Jumping in to an old topic:

I created a hashtag for every menu item on the left menu (calendar, photos, database, etc) that are all a basic color (green) and a ?gray for Admin only.

Our members collect, build and make dollhouses & dollhouse miniatures. We post photos quite often so there¡¯s a color for #lookInPhotos and #PhotoComment (for them to tell what they just posted and others to comment on it after they¡¯ve looked). Everyone knows the albums are listed by their names and alphabetized.

I have one for #accessibility for builders and a different one for each help, helpful hints and glues. One for #Workshops and one for #Shows.

A few weeks ago an older couple that travels to shows across the country (to sell to dealers - for resale in miniature shops) had their motor home and all the merchandise stolen from the motel parking lot. I made a caution tape yellow hashtag #theft. Both to be on the lookout and for the multitude of comments about it.

I find it quite helpful to be organized,
Nancy

Member Status Info from Transfer

¿ªÔÆÌåÓý

So after a transfer of one of my old groups, I have 400+ moderated members in that group.? So I downloaded the members and imported it into an excel sheet, which exposed a number of things.? So perhaps you owners of some experience can assist to make comments on these statuses.

?

¡¤???????? Post Status 1 indicates "Moderated" members - I have over 400+ in a group after transfer.? Of course, you can't sort by moderated online, so I'd have to parse the spreadsheet to isolate the e-mail addresses if I wanted to purge these members.? I suspect many are no longer active.? Would be nice to have a moderated "button".? I'm guessing that has long ago been requested.

¡¤???????? Post Status 2 indicates "not allowed".? I'm guessing I had trouble with them in the past or it is some code the transferred in weird from Yahoo.? Since I had not don't a "not allowed" in many years at Yahoo groups, I have only a faint recollection.? Like moderated, I'd have to parse the spreadsheet and do a mass removal of those.? Seems to be the right approach.

¡¤???????? Email Delivery - The choices are 0,1,2 & 3.? However, there is a 4 in that column under many member's names.? Any idea what a 4 indicates?? The only place I see a 4 is the User Status column.? I have only 1's in the user status as I've cleared all bounced.

Re: Subscription Approval Problem

That is the message I received and "subscribed?via web" does appear in Activity log...
Yet he did not unsubscribe nor does "left via web" appear in the log.?

In the end, its good now. I was able to send another invitation and the member accepted it this morning and all is well.

I take it your received a "Subscription Approval Needed" email that you
replied to. What error message did the bounce back contain?

It is possible for a member who applies via web to open their
Subscription Options and Unsubscribe (withdraw their request) before you
reply. If he/she did the error response would be:

> 500 That subscription no longer exists. Most likely the person decided
> to unsubscribe.

However the Activity log should then say the member "left via web",
sometime after the entry showing his/her application. Too, you would
have received a "Subscriber has left" notification, if you have elected
to receive such.

> Meanwhile in the "Activity" log reads correctly
> "johnsmith@... for membership"

Does it say "via web"? or "via email"?

> So how can approve something I can't see?

The real question is whether there was still an pending membership to
approve. The error response to your attempted approval by email suggests
that was no longer the case.

Different style of 'via Group.io' / DMARC tagging?

RFS

Yesterday I subscribed to my local Freecycle group and this morning I received a message tagged by Gmail in a peculiar way.

I'm vaguely familiar with how DMARC works and how Groups.io (and other similar) emails get displayed in Gmail. Most of them come through like this, where the 'via Groups.io' is a discrete field placed after the sender's name, and the 'via' is linked to Google's help doc on DMARC.

But here, the 'via Groups.io' is part of the sender's name, and the Yahoo email address is very funky looking:

Notice how the email address is formatted [USERNAME]@....

Are these both normal, or is the second one unique??

I'm mostly curious, but also wondering if it could be related to this question about Gmail marking posts at 'possibly spoofed', which Shal says he's not seen before:?/g/GroupManagersForum/topic/emails_marked_incorrectly_as/12124257

Import existing database in group or subgroup #transfer

Since the transfer process is taking much longer than expected, I decided to manually transfer some content from one of my old YG groups to a new IO subgroup.
Is it possible to import a database in CVS format into the Database section of a group? Or do I have to create a new table and insert each record?

Marina

After 6 days, still no transfer from yahoogroups

On Feb 13, I created [email protected]? ?I tried several times inviting?[email protected]?to my yahoogroup, mostly got errors. A few times I got the message 1 new member was invited. I'm pretty anxious to migrate my group to , see yahoo group is deteriorating quickly.?

Is there anything I can do to get my group migrated?

Thanks

Re: Mapping users to messages after a YG transfer? #transfer

Arno Martens

Before proceeding with Mark on the complete transfer I had explained what I was doing and asked the YG members after receiving their invitation to put the IO and YG addresses in to the To: field of their posts in order not to loose anything whe we would decide which group to reteain.
It is the IO group we kept and I deleted all posters from the YG (the owner had gone AWOL 12 years ago and I couldn't delete the YG it with my moderator privileges).

Re: Directory

Arno Martens

One of the members that are shown in the groups' member list on the web with a [ P ] displays as Post Status 1=Moderated when importing the csvfile to? spread sheet.

Re: #hashtag in Files? 2 questions #hashtags

Nancy in Renton

1. Was this ever implemented?
2. How did the first paragraph, below the line (*** ) become indented to highlight it?

Are Files with a hashtag in the description indexed to be included in
a hashtag search? It appears they are not. Should they be?
Oh, that's an interesting idea.

So far as I know, only message topics implement the hashtag concept. But extending it to Files and perhaps Photos could be quite useful.

Re: File permission

Under Admin > Settings, scroll down to the Features section and make sure Files is set for "Subscribers can view and upload".

Partially answered my own question. I just noticed the box next to the search link. Problem with that is the post with the number you enter comes up with all the posts after it! What good is that?

File permission

I have a member who tried to add the minutes to our files but said she did not have permission. I looked everywhere to see how to give her such permission but didn¡¯t find it. Thoughts?

Receiving gifs, jpgs and creations in emails -html

Dear forum members,

We¡¯re an international group (US/Australia/New Zealand/South Africa/Germany/Belgium/The Netherlands) that is set up to create tags from tutorials and challenges. We send them to the group as .jpg, .png or animated gifs, with or without a html-script. Our group language is English.
With some of our members we are currently testing our creations at io-groups whilst maintaining our core group at Yahoo. Some of the creations are sent to both groups to compare.

We¡¯ve encountered a couple of problems that I would like to tell you about here.
First of all: I¡¯m the group moderator, from the Netherlands and English is not my mother tongue so bear with me.

Our observations:
Firstly: We managed to more or less tackle the placement of the io-groups links to suit the needs of our group, so that problem I wrote about two weeks ago is solved (more or less).

However the test group does not receive the creations the way they were sent off.
Some of the creations are being sent to both the old YG *and* to our group at io.
* Animated gifs don¡¯t work properly.
* Images are scaled down to a degree that the sender¡¯s original creation is badly visible (colours are ¡®muted¡¯)
* In some of the e-mails received the images do not show up at all and only x-es are shown.
The funny thing being that some of the testing members receive the script perfectly well at e.g. 637 kb and other members receive the same mail at 9 kb (just the text and html).

Our posting limits are set to 1mb per e-mail.
We have sent original creations back and forth in e-mail as attached .zips to view the way they were intended (scaled down, of course) to compare those with the way we receive them in our inboxes.
We have compared operating systems, e-mail clients and geographical locations to see if they make a difference.

In order not to affect our core group members¡¯ creativity or the quality of their creative output we will continue testing a bit more before we take the plunge.
We still consider to join io-groups as the rest of your performance is wonderful ¨Cbut I cannot ask our members to join yet...

We would love to have these problems out of the way.
Do you have any suggestions that may help?
Maybe I can change something at the group¡¯s settings I¡¯m not aware of as yet?
I can provide zipped examples to the group owners if necessary -I noticed previous attachments were stripped to this group.

Thank you very much in advance for your input!

Re: Emails marked incorrectly as "possibly spoofed"

Sara,

Gmail is marking the emails I send to my group at the new location as
"possibly spoofed." Is there any way to prevent this, or is it a gmail
issue?
It is a Gmail issue.

It is possible that if you dismiss that marking a few times (assuming there's a way to do that) that it will calm down after a while. I've been using Gmail with my groups here for some time and it isn't giving me such a warning. It has been too long, I don't recall if it ever did.

Technically the marking is correct: your messages coming back from your Groups.io group have your From address, but they didn't come (directly) from your account - an outside server (Groups.io) delivered the message. I am a little surprised though, I thought Gmail "understood" this behavior of mailing lists.

Re: Subscription Approval Problem

Kevin,

I have a member who applied for membership, so I tried to reply by
email to approve but the email bounced back.
I take it your received a "Subscription Approval Needed" email that you replied to. What error message did the bounce back contain?

It is possible for a member who applies via web to open their Subscription Options and Unsubscribe (withdraw their request) before you reply. If he/she did the error response would be:

500 That subscription no longer exists. Most likely the person decided
to unsubscribe.
However the Activity log should then say the member "left via web", sometime after the entry showing his/her application. Too, you would have received a "Subscriber has left" notification, if you have elected to receive such.

Meanwhile in the "Activity" log reads correctly
"johnsmith@... for membership"
Does it say "via web"? or "via email"?

So how can approve something I can't see?
The real question is whether there was still an pending membership to approve. The error response to your attempted approval by email suggests that was no longer the case.

Re: Groups.io logos, nomenclature, etc.

¿ªÔÆÌåÓý

Bruce,

I pronounce it GriO ( as in Hi Ho Silver)? or GiO or GO ( Gee Oh, )

In my mind Grio Group or GeeO Group has a good ring to it. GO Group takes it to another level.

I suppose that after the absolutely overwhelming Y branding, marketing and self serving image, that Groups.io is bland and understated. I rather like that Gio is not competing with my sites branding.

OK,
Tony

One thing I'm struggling with as we migrate...how to cleanly advertise this on our web page and in our newsletter?

The groups.io logo is nondescript at best, and doesn't invite anyone to click on it. In web text and emails, it's very clumsy to repeatedly refer to the migrated group as "our new collaboration site". Calling it "our groups.io group" doesn't exactly roll off the tongue, either.

I'd be interested to hear what others are doing to mitigate this problem.
