Things started to go badly haywire for me in my Yahoo group a little over two years ago. I was in Shal's Yahoo GMF group then, and I think I can lay claim to "most vocal complainer" - which shows what a tough customer I am and, I think, lends more credence to my perception of groups.io's high quality. I was so vocal in my complaints that I think the reason Shal told me about groups.io was mainly to get me to shut up...Yahoo was, unbelievably, getting worse and worse by the day. A former software engineer, I'd never seen such a piece of - can I say this? - such an unbelievable piece of shit software or such unbelievable lack of support. It was jaw-dropping then, and it's even more jaw-dropping now.
So I made a test group and sounded out my group members. I was particularly concerned about our specialist veterinarian member who is a mainstay of our group, and whether he would stay if we made the move. But I decided to take a chance. I had to get out of Yahoo.?The transfer was seamless except for one person who, in an attempt to be helpful, emailed her "send me a link to login" email to another person, causing them to inadvertently log in to her account. We were (at that point) very small, and everyone knew each other, so there was laughter all around. That was literally the only glitch.?It?turned out that everyone who accessed the group strictly by email hardly even noticed the move. In fact, I find out every so often that some of them think we're still in Yahoo. I'd prepared everyone for Armageddon for over month in advance and the move was profoundly anticlimactic. People just continued to receive and answer emails.?I was also really concerned at first that potential new members would have trouble finding us after moving out of the Yahoo group community and into what I feared would be the "backwater" of groups.io, but it turned out to be the opposite. We grew much more rapidly after the move than before. After the move, everything started to run smoothly. People were finding us more easily than before and we grew more rapidly. And, of course there were all the new and amazing features - some of which, unbelievably, I requested from Mark myself, and he responded and added them! The slightest problem, I email Mark and he responds immediately. This was after the experience in Yahoo groups where nobody responds, ever. It was like Waiting for Godot over there. Now I've become spoiled. I have the luxury of complaining about the slightest little detail here that goes wrong, and drumming my fingertips with impatience while Mark has the audacity to take more than an hour or so to fix them lol. I'm a fan, and I don't worry about the future.? -- J |

These are probably people who didn't even remember they were in the group and, when given an explicit opportunity, were reminded of it and made a clean break. It's very unlikely that they quit because of the move. I wouldn't go to the trouble and work of deleting them in the old group. Who cares? I would, however, close the old group to posting as soon as possible to avoid having to move posts around. On Mon, Feb 19, 2018 at 10:43 PM, SP4149 <ken@...> wrote:

My first bad experience with YG was after the Neo upgrade (I guess you can call it an upgrade), and then again in the last few months or so. One day the Photo Albums were not working very good, then another day the Files, then the Membership List, and on and on. Granted it didn't happen all the time, but enough over a period of time I began to wonder if things were going to get better or not. That's when I decided I should investigate if there were other sites I might like to move my group too, but after reading what other comparable sites offered I couldn't find one that offered what I was looking for. It was only by accident while looking through YG help groups looking for answers, did I hear mention of Groups.io. I looked Groups.io over, made a test site (Which became our new site), and experimented with what I could do with it for almost a month. The feel of Groups.io was different (And so was the look), but it did fill the bill for me so I moved our group to Groups.io. One big difference in my decision to move was support. Over at YG there is no company phone number to call for help, there is no company email address to write to for help with YG, and there is no person to communicate with online dealing with the groups. The only place you get any kind of help at YG is with the help user groups, but they can't doing anything about bugs or fixes to the groups...That's why YG is slowly going down in my opinion. At Groups.io the GMF is much more effective than my experience was at YG, and I have actually had correspondence with the owner and developer Mark! To be honest I liked YG, well, before the Neo upgrade. Something that surprised me after the transfer was, I've gotten members posting to our new site, telling me it has been the first time in months they have been able to post at all. Now I'm done with YG, and I'm all in at Groups.io.

Hi all,
It seems like there is some desire to share stories about our experiences with Groups.io; and also with migrating from Yahoo Groups and other services. And there are also, I think, readers who would be interested in first-hand accounts. So I'm inviting such stories to this thread. On the other hand, if you've moved on from your experiences at Y!Groups or elsewhere; and you are, as my kids would say, "so done with" reading praise for Groups.io and/or Mark, then by by all means make use of the "Mute This Topic" and/or "Mute #Testimonials" links in the footer of this message (by email). Re: After the transfer, some YG subscribers immediately opt out of new list on groups.io
¿ªÔÆÌåÓýI experienced many people leaving our group too, but I knew that was going to happen. About ever four years I would purge the group to get the true number of members in the group, as I¡¯ve found out our membership numbers get falsely inflated over time. People come and go all the time, and a lot leave without unsubscribing. The last time I purged the group I started with about 280 members, and by the time the purge was done we had about 85 real members. By the end of February I¡¯ll know the true number of members we have, and I¡¯m guessing we¡¯ll end up with around 85 again. In another 3 to 4 years I¡¯ll do it all over again. ? Don |
After the transfer, some YG subscribers immediately opt out of new list on groups.io
¿ªÔÆÌåÓýWithin seconds of getting the rush that your group has finally, successfully transferred, you start getting messages from members of the old YG list who have immediately quit the new list (unsubscribed) This is disappointing, after the frustration of waiting for the transfer to complete, to have old list members quit without even investigating the new list.? At this point I will change the YG list to not allow new members or new posts.? But there is this impulse to remove these instant unsubscribers from the old YG list as well.? Make it a complete sweep on both lists... ken "It has always seemed strange to me," said Doc. Re: After 6 days 9 hours, transfer completed Was:After 6 days, still no transfer from yahoogroups
¿ªÔÆÌåÓýThe YG group transfer for my HO-Steam list completed tonight at 9:16PM PST, Easy Group Transfer originally requested noon Feb 13th.? It was a relatively small group of 422 members (another 140 members were bouncing on YG and weren't transferred).? On my last transfer close to 200 members weren't transferred, I sent a group invite and only about 5% of the lost members had valid e-mail addresses, the rest of the invites failed. I subscribe to two other YG lists that are also transferring, neither has completed, although one requested a day earlier than I did. Results may vary. ken "It has always seemed strange to me," said Doc. Don,

If I recall correctly, image drag-and-drop to the RTE only worked if the image was hosted somewhere, and the result was an "http" type of image. So that likely answers the mystery: it wasn't an attachment, properly speaking. Shal |

Jonathon,
Your first response, set up your own, is correct.? I stand corrected, it's obvious but most Yahoo group emigrating are likely not that technical and/or want a free group. I thought about adding our own group to our website or on the same ISP but what you get here for free or for a couple of bucks per month doesn't require one getting back into domains, servers, email, DKIM? and all that technical jazz.? I can leave that to Mark and focus on our mission. I also prefer to pay our way not only because I get more features but because, as a software professional, I feel the need to recognize another's professional output. And 10 bucks a month is not going to break me or our organization. -- Bob Bellizzi The Corneal Dystrophy Foundation |

Google Groups remains an option, although it requires a lot of kludging with shared cloud storage and a series hyperlinks to get even some of the functionality that we've all come to take for granted. Web-based content management systems (CMS) such as Drupal are also an option if you want to build a forum on your web site.
The good thing is that groups.io has the functionality to download all your messages into a single ZIP file for archival and perhaps a later upload to any new location that you prefer. Exactly how the messages are extracted from Yahoo by the transfer agent is a mystery to me. Bruce |

Cherrill,
I am not sending this on top your response to respond to you, persee. You are just the last message I received on this topic. With regard to Yahoo groups crashing and burning. I knew that my yahoo group is having problems and others have complained about yahoo, but I have not heard of its impending demise, i.e., crashing, burning, etc., until I came to this group. If I accept that, then all the arguments everyone has made against worrying about groups.io is perfectly sound. However, am I just listening to what the tech savvy people on this group believe that have made everyone else believe, or is it an almost certainty that yahoo groups will be gone in a short time? If the latter, what is the data, evidence? Second, Bob said he wasn't aware of alternatives. There are a couple. Freelists is one alternative. Granted it is not as powerful and as good as YG and IO, but one amateur astronomy group is quite satisfied with it. A few years ago when I was contemplating leaving YG's I became aware of another discussion group that seemed like a good alternative. I don't remember what is was called. Maybe some of these groups (which is not a forum but email messages are sent out) do not have all the features that IO has, but for certain discussion groups they work just fine. Log In issues for Existing Subscribers
I have posted this message to the Beta Group, but would like someone else to test my observations.? Some of my members are having difficulties logging in to our specific xxxGroup Home Page.? I could not understand their complaints until I experimented with my multiple test subscriptions.? I find these inconsistencies, which I think should be addressed:
TestAccount 1 (with Password - set for Individual Messages) -- Group Home Link in footer of Individual email message takes me to Log In Page.? Log in with Email Address and Password takes me to Manage My Subscription Page. ? My Groups are listed, and I can select xxxGroup to get to xxxGroup Home Page. TestAccount 2 (with No Password - set for Individual Messages) -- Group Home Link in footer of Individual email message takes me to Log In Page.? Log in with Email and either Forgot Your Password or Send me an Email.? Link in Email takes me to Profile Page.? I must use the drop down menu for My Groups at top of page to select xxxGroup to get to xxxGroup Home Page. TestAccount 3 (with No Password - set for Digest Messages)? -- xxxGroup link in Header of Digest Message takes me to Log In Page. ? -- If I Log In with Email Address and select Forgot Your Password, the link in the Email takes me to Profile Page.? I must use the drop down menu for My Groups at top of page to select xxxGroup to get to xxxGroup Home Page. -- However, if I Log In with Email Address and select Send me an Email, the link in the Email takes me directly to my xxxGroup Home Page. It seems most helpful that any Group Home link would lead directly to the xxxGroup Home Page (without having to select xxxGroup from any list or drop down menu.)? Second choice would be to lead to the Manage My Subscriptions page with a group list that is already displayed (without having to click on a drop down menu.)? I think having the Log In page leading to the Profile Page is most confusing, as it so closely resembles the Log In page itself, and the xxxGroup Home Page must be accessed by the My Groups drop down menu.
