In my experience, Display Name gets auto-populated by an incoming email only if initially empty. It you manually change/clear it by editing a subscription record, it remains that way (I would welcome further testing on this).
I tried this right away, and it works as you describe. I changed my display name in 1 group, by editing the subscription entry, and that change stuck (incl. subgroups, as expected). In other main groups the old name (from the groups.io user profile) remained what it was.?
I didn¡®t try to clear the name altogether - will try that next and report the result.
Which brings up a point that I meant to mention to Karen, but forgot - even if you force your subscribers to enter something, there's no assurance that a real name will be provided.
Of course - we don¡®t want a legally binding subscription with the correct name in groups.io I think. There are enough organisations with 3 letter abbreviations that can work on finding out the correct name from an email address ¡­

To the locked subgroups, no. They are locked and inaccessible.

You should still be able to invite new members to the main group, if you aren't already over the 100-member limit.

Interesting question. You can't delete them from a subgroup, because you won't have access to the member lists there. But you should be able to delete someone from the main group and they'll still automatically be removed from all subgroups (I have not tested this).

Before doing all this, you might want to look into Sponsorships. Your members might surprise you, and contribute enough funds to keep you afloat.

Is it possible for a person to have a user profile in groups.io that contains a display name, but clear the name (or change it to something different) just for a specific group to be anonymous in that group? Normally the same email address and display name are used in all groups where a person is a member.?

Hi Karen,
You can activate ?restricted membership¡° for your group (admin - preferences - settings) - then any membership request will be moderated, and you can ask for a name if necessary before approving a membership request. But there¡®s no automatic way to achieve that I believe.

Hi Otto,
free groups can't have subgroups at all, except if they are legacy groups that had subgroups before 15. January 2020. So if your main group is younger than that, you lose visibility of the subgroups if you downgrade to free ( the contents of the subgroups will be kept in case you change to a paid plan again later).

That's because you are already subscribed to the group. If you're logged off and unsubscribed, it works.

There is no way to set up a one-click link to join a group. At a minimum, the prospective subscriber must provide an email address.

I did not see that button "Join This Group" before. I looked and on none of my groups that are unlimited (anyone can join) their homepages does not have that button.

How can that button be added to my groups home page?

2) remove

Subscriptions to this group do not require approval from the moderators.
OR
change that at
Admin > Preferences > Settings > Group Type and Membership by checking the "Restricted Membership" box then scroll down and click on the blueish-green "Update Group" button.

This happens even if the?logged-in group member manually enters the full url to the join link into the browser's search bar.

Linda, if you are logged in as a group member (or perhaps just have an automatic login cookie set) and want to test the join facility, you must do it from an incognito (anonymous) browser window.

Part of my #suggestion to the beta group was that if the person accessing the join link is currently logged in as a group member, a dialog should come up saying "You are already a group member" with an OK to dismiss.

heic is not supported but as far as I'm aware, all others are.

However you do have to scroll down the page to see the Join button.?
