Hi Karen,
You can activate ?restricted membership¡° for your group (admin - preferences - settings) - then any membership request will be moderated, and you can ask for a name if necessary before approving a membership request. But there¡®s no automatic way to achieve that I believe.

I run an open group and some people only include their email address. No first or last name.?
