Re: Choose 'no email' for main?

Frank,

Can a member of a group decide they do not want any email from the main group but choose to get email from a subgroup?

Yes.

A member of a subgroup has a Subscription page for the subgroup which is separate from the one for the primary group (and separate from any other subgroups). They can choose whatever Email Delivery option they prefer for each.

From what I can see, if they unsubscribe from the main list, they are out of the entire group.

True.

They would need to remain members of the primary group. But, they can set their primary group Subscription to No Email or Special Notices Only.

I'd check the status page first.? If it shows nothing going on, I'd give the Go Ahead again.? I suspect this is what you'll need to do.

Choose 'no email' for main?

Can a member of a group decide they do not want any email from the main group but choose to get email from a subgroup?

I wanted to use the "main" group as a discussion forum and a "announce" (receive-only) subgroup just for meeting announcements.? But some members may only want to get the announcements.? From what I can see, if they unsubscribe from the main list, they are out of the entire group.

Thanks for any advice.

Re: Calendar Cancellations Not Sending Updates #calendar #issue

Hi friends,

Actually, hitting the button "cancel event" doesn't have any effect.? The item remains, and no notifications are sent out.? Is my only option to delete the event from the calendar?

Re: Yahoo Transfers are On Again!

I instigated a transfer from Yahoo, had made '[email protected]' a moderator, and had clicked on 'Go ahead to transfer' just before the process was suspended. Nothing has happened since then.
Now than transfers are possible again, do I need to instigate the transfer process again or will it be picked up in due course?

Reply to a post gets undeliverable message

I have a member who posted this:

Not sure what the problem is but when I try to reply to messages lately

I get the undeliverable message. Anybody else having this problem?

For 20 years she's used a hotmail address
And ever since we moved here, no one but she has had a problem.
She's not bouncing, her membership looks good, she can post a new message.

Any helps?

There wasn't any activity from me?going in that one group?since I changed my email?address for all of my group IO groups.?I am the owner - no moderators - so the mail wasn't rejected by the group. I do have posting privileges and my mail isn't moderated.
?
Now I don't know why this happened but I use Incredimail
I went to my contacts and had changed the way the name displays when I sent mail to that group as STATS
When I scrolled my mouse over the word STATS it showed the correct email address
But it wouldn't send when I put STATS in the to field.
?
I tried it with the plain group email and then my mail started sending.
?
Now in the other group IO groups I have created shortcuts for sending mail and it worked fine.

Look in the group's Activity Log to see if there's an item there
corresponding to your attempted posts.

That confirms that the messages haven't posted to the list.

There are several possibilities:
?
o??Posted to the wrong address (e.e. spelling error in the address you
sent to).
?
o Rejected by your group.
?
o Still in your group's pending message queue (needs to be approved).

Re: Map view option for database tables

Hi Bob,

thanks for the update. I'll work through your steps so I can fully understand your process.? I started by exporting the beta table to a CSV. What happens there is that the single address field on the database gets split out into its sub-fields (address line 1, 2, City, Zip etc.) with a column for each.

I think your proposed improvements list looks good and if implemented would add some really useful features.? I would probably like to see a summary of a Google seach for a location at one side of the map. This frequently shows pictures and for places like cafes & restaurants (which is what my table will contain) opening hours and also a link for directions.

Regards
Andy

Re: Permalink to topic?

Ok, one can right click on the list of topics, copy the link address.

You end up with a link address:
/g/GroupManagersForum/topic/permalink_to_topic/29189544?p=,,,50,0,0,0::recentpostdate%2Fsticky,,,50,2,0,29189544

Yuck.

But can edit it down to this:
/g/GroupManagersForum/topic//29189544

Convoluted.? Needs a "button"!

Re: spam prevention for discussion lists

Frank,

But I'm concerned spammers will just create (huge numbers of) dummy
email addresses in an attempt to post.
Unless you set your group to allow non-subscribers to post the first hurdle for spammer would be joining your group. The bulk spammers won't bother, in my experience it is pretty rare to find one who will go to that trouble. Even on a large group with unrestricted membership.

If you do allow non-subscribers to post those messages are always put in the moderation queue, so at worst you'd have to reject them when they happen. I've a couple of groups set this way, the larger one has picked up a recurring spammer trying to sell a related service but so far that comes in only once or twice week, so no big deal to delete from the pending queue.

I'm about to create a discussion list (receive-only emails) for our
user group. I can set the moderation level to N approved posts before
a member can post unmoderated.
That's also a good way to thwart spammers, those few who bother to join your group.

Re: spam prevention for discussion lists

We use a form on our web pages that allows people to request a subscription to our list. You can get the code from the Promote page under the Admin features. I don't think it has any specific security features built in, but we haven't seen any attempts to join programmatically. The code displays a window where people can enter their email address and a button they need to press to request to join the list. Of course, they then have to be approved by a moderator. We had a similar device for our Yahoo list before we moved to Groups.io. We never had any problems with that either.

Re: Permalink to topic?

KISS.? i'm just looking to create the link, regarless what I am doing with it.

Good trick to right-click, I hadn't thought of that.?
But of course, if it's the initial post there is no "show all" button to copy the address.? Say, post an important msg I want to paste in another forum immediately, and make sure they end up at the topic, not the first post.

There is a way to go to the 1st msg and then back to topics and yada?yada and end up with a browser url?such as your way:
/g/groupname/topic/topicname/29188727? <-- topic number

But I was looking for something do it quickly (and shorter) at the 1st posting:
/g/groupname/topic/29188727

It depends on what you mean by "creating a link."?Assuming you want something you can paste into a message, copying a string (like a URL) to the clipboard with a mouse click is possible, but it requires javascript to be enabled and may not work at all with some older browsers (pre-2016, it required Flash to be installed). Having said that,?I'm sure Mark is more up-to-date on such stuff than I am...sounds like a beta suggestion to me.

If there is more than one message, I right-click on the "View All xx Messages in Topic" link below the message I'm reading and select "Copy Link Address" from the resulting browser popup. Not too terribly inconvenient.

Hope this helps,
Bruce

In the year that I've been involved with groups.io, I don't recall seeing any inquiries along these lines in GMF. Your mileage may vary, void where prohibited, objects in mirror may be closer than they appear.

Can we have some sort of delayed purge, that is, if a user is not approved after NN days, its auto-purged?
Pending subscriptions older than two weeks are automatically deleted (ref:?). Those in Pending and Not Confirmed status are also conveniently displayed on a separate, "Pending Approval" page in the member's list so they can be deleted earlier if desired.

Re: Map view option for database tables

Andy,
I just finished playing around with an exported/imported copy of the Beta Mapping Database.
I found it very easy to manipulate.
  1. I exported/imported it as json so that I had a working copy.
  2. I modified my small sample .csv file's header row to match the Database's field names
  3. I Upload(ed) the rows in my sample csv file too the database to see what happened and they not only came in but the addresses all worked correctly.
  4. I then modified the name of one field in both my sample csv file and the database, deleted all but 1 row at the database and reuploaded my sample csv file and checked the result and it was fine.
  5. I finally modified all of the fields I needed to, changing the field type (didn't mess w/address: fields) in both the database and my sample csv file
  6. Deleted all but on row in the database.
  7. Uploaded my sample csv file to the database.
All of the above worked perfectly.? I've also added fields and changed field types to get what I want.
The? only issues I have are some proposed improvements I've asked for at

Like, resequencing the IDs, having more edit/viewing restriction options and accessing Google Maps Directions
I've got a Specialist's database of over 500 MDs just itching to get uploaded.
This is the easiest path to Google Maps I've ever found
