How about a reminder to the offenders to be considerate. ?They may not realize the effect.?

It¡¯s like Amazon asking ¡°can you help this person and answer this question¡± and the idiots that answer ¡°I don¡¯t know". ?Some must hear themselves talk.?

The "ignore member" option has been discussed on the beta group, but no action has been taken so far.

After you publish your Group Guidelines (on the Settings page via the "Member Notices" button), you could put the chatty member on moderation for awhile, so you'd have the option of rejecting or deleting their posts, to help them gain some restraint.

Re: coping with high traffic

Deborah,

One member in particular sends out a constant stream of "I couldn't agree more" and "I was thinking of the same thing" type posts.

?I've seen that behavior in some of my "social" groups. Contacting a few of those individuals off-list I came to understand that they perceived each group posting to be an email directed to them personally. And then etiquette demanded a polite response.
?
Those few I reassured that it was unnecessary, and even disruptive, to reply to each posting. They eventually caught on to the idea of the group as a group conversation.

It's been pointed out to me that if you have the appropriate settings in your group then you don't have to rescale offline; simply re-upload the photo and GIO will do the rescaling for you.?

Many thanks to the mystery person who reminded me of that. :-)

How can I delete topics

How can I delete a whole group of one topic??
Is there an easy way to delete say 20 or 30 messages of the same topic??

Thanks?

If someone knows of a workaround, let me know...otherwise I might go whine about it in beta again. :-)

I don't, but I really like your idea of using sort by size as a proxy for a match of file content in a bulk delete feature:

Not because of the computational burden, I agree with Lena that that's likely negligible, but just because sorting and filtering lists by various attributes is something that ought to exist, even if a bulk delete or consolidate doesn't.

And if consolidation were an option (alternative to deletion) the system would have no need to notify the member.

I am moderating a list that is only two weeks old but has grown to be high-traffic with less than forty members. The less chatty people are complaining about the volume of email and I'm trying to help them find ways to deal with it.

Do the email programs used by the members wanting to "mute this member" have the ability to filter by email address? Those who can filter should filter the unwanted messages into the Trash folder. Those who don't should Google on "How to filter emails in <name_of_program>"

As a point of curiosity about how many messages trigger this desire to mute? Approximately how many messages a day are posted to the group in question?

I suspect it depends on the nature of the group.? One of my groups uses groups.io basically as an email list with the rare file uploaded.? For the members of that group, there is no reason to log in. Their interface requirements to groups.io is perfectly satisfied by their MUA and the occasional file link.

In my group, the Emailed Photos folder tends to be the biggest source of extraneous fluff. The problem is, each photo here is linked to the corresponding message...if you delete the attachment, the message will show up as "edited" in the message archive. Worse, the person who originally sent it gets a notification from GIO that you've been farting around with their posts. I know of no way to circumvent this behavior.

Lacking a bulk delete capability, it would be nice to at least be able to clean out the old stuff without inducing paranoia among our subscribers. If someone knows of a workaround, let me know...otherwise I might go whine about it in beta again. :-)

Unfortunately, no.

The only option is burdensome:? download it, delete it from the site, rescale it on your computer, re-upload it, then reassign ownership back to the original subscriber. However, this is still better than it was a month ago, when that last step wasn't an available option.

Re: Cannot add a file

Thanks for all the help!
I started listing the files by date, oldest first.
Then in some of the albums I found how to delete photos, albeit one at a time.
The group is sort of How to Do It, and I removed pics of their cat watching the task
and similar pics. They cannot object, as you said.
And I discovered that the reduction in size is not retroactive.
For now the possibly unhappy subscriber will be left alone.
I deleted enough that I can now add a new file.

Is there any way that I can reduce the photo size myself when I open the photo with Edit?

?
Many members are finding it hard to "reply to sender" rather than "reply to group" ... other list platforms have links at the bottom of each message to make that easier. Perhaps I've missed a help topic on how to do this here.
Also though "mute this topic" is useful, some members are asking for a "mute this member" link. One member in particular sends out a constant stream of "I couldn't agree more" and "I was thinking of the same thing" type posts.
?
Besides writing up a common-sense set of list guidelines -- some call them rules -- what else have you managers done to deal with people who either contribute too much or people who don't like a high volume of contributions?
?
If this has been discussed before, give me some keywords for searching this forum's archives.

True, but that's more an argument for more documentation than an
argument against using distinct punctuation.

Note that we're talking about a small use case: where someone copied or
screen-shot from groups.io's web interface for use as an example or
answer (or the like).

Otherwise the user would be seeing the format of their own choice, and
if they're uncertain (or certain that it is wrong) hopefully the user
would think to look at their own Account Preferences to see what choices
are available in Groups.io.

Only if you speak English. Or the language of choice, in some future
world where Groups.io has localizations to other languages.
Yes, I can't argue with any of that. You're right as usual.

Re: Rejecting a post with explanation

Ken,

You mentioned a work around, but I could not find it in the FAQ.
I don't think it applies to your situation, but here it is:
/static/help#i-am-on-gmail-and-i-dont-like-getting-copies-of-my-messages

The effect of that setting, when checked, is for Groups.io to replace the Message-ID field in messages you post, when they are sent back to you. That way Gmail thinks it is a fresh message and not one you already have.

I don't know if our messaging Microsoft would help or hinder the
situation. If you believe the former, please post a good address to
contact them.
I don't think it can hurt, but I don't use Microsoft for email service and have no idea how to contact them for email-related issues.

As has been explained, there is no difference between a Subscriber and a Member, the terms are interchangeable.? The only one that can answer your question is Mark.? This has been suggested on the beta group, but I don't remember when the discussion took place.

Re: Subscribers v.s. Members

The following two "levels," if you will, reflect the groups.io hierarchy used to keep track of accounts.

Not Confirmed -- These are people who have registered an email address, but that's it. Such people can request membership in a group, but until groups.io sends them a confirmation email and they click in the link therein, they do not even hold an account. The term groups.io uses for this is "Not Confirmed" and such people will have an NC badge in the membership list.

Confirmed -- The person has clicked on the link in the confirmation email, and now has an active account. The registered email address is the ONLY account identifier. This does not necessarily mean such a person is subscribed to any groups, but at least they can do so -- via this email address -- without going through the confirmation process again.?

The following levels only make sense within the context of some established group.

Subscribers/Members -- These are Confirmed accounts that have joined the group. Such people have only basic access to group functions, as established [or limited] by the Owner in the group Settings.
Note that these two terms are identical. Attempting to create roles based on what people decide to do (log into the site or whatever) instead of what their capabilities are is folly. If you find discriminating between these terms to be useful on some level that's fine; as long as you understand that it's an arbitrary mental convenience and the software does not know the difference.?

Moderator -- This is an intermediate level of access, generally used by Owners to delegate some of the group maintenance responsibilities to trusted Subscribers. In groups.io, this is also something of a misnomer...the capabilities of Moderators is highly configurable and often has nothing to do with the screening of incoming messages. Make someone a Moderator and look at the resulting Privileges and Notification checkboxes in their member record and you'll see what I mean. However, there are also blanket capabilities that can be made available only to Moderators and above...these are found in the group Settings.

Owner -- You own the group. You can do anything you want with it, within the capabilities available via the groups.io interface. If there's something you want to do but can't, is the proper place for suggestions.

Hope this helps,
Bruce

Why must voting only be done by Members (logged in at the G.io group website)?

Why can¡¯t Subscribers (those without a Password or ¡®loginlink¡¯/temporary password) and Members vote by email?
