How to Transfer a Yahoo Group, but Reduce the Photos Section #howtoguide

I have a question - feeling it is time to transfer my Yahoo Groups over to Groups.IO, now, as it appears that Yahoo Groups has finally had the last nail placed in the coffin with the advent of true zero support.? So, I have a couple of groups that have been in existence for about 8 years or more, and the Photos sections have become quite large.? I am trying to keep my groups under the free size limit, as I don't have any way to charge my list members for a larger option.? Is there any way I can reduce the number of photos that will transfer across?? Or, after the transfer, is there a way I can delete or remove older photo albums?? Both groups have photo albums that are set up by the month/year, so it is relatively easy to figure out which photo folders are the oldest, and just delete those older year's photo albums.? Any suggestions would be very welcome.?

Please call out any you find significant.
Well the two above ones are significant :)
Nice to know work is proceeding on this. Still not heard back about my enquiry why entire message does not seem to be searched on, but will advise when received a response.
It is a breath of fresh air to know that the site is constantly being worked on and upgraded.

On the group page, click on New Topic. By email, just start a new email - not a reply.?

email photos

Now it will let me delete a photo in the email folder but then it stays there with a blank. This never happened before. I could delete photos and it would just disappear.

What happened and how do i get rid of these blanks?

Anita

email photos

I deleted a message but in the folder email photos the links still appear and it wont let me delete it. How can I get rid of those email photos that still appear. The photo does not appear just the name and a blank.? I am trying to get if off the email photos folder.

Also if my group has a topic every day that might be good morning is there a way not to link all of the same topics together? I would like them to be separate.

Thanks

Re: Delete a post without deleting the whole thread #messages

Yep, you just did not look in the right place.
Open the post to read it.
At the very end, after the post you should find links for Reply? ?Like? and More
Click/tap More and, if you are a moderator with the correct privilege or an owner you will see Delete this post

Re: Delete a post without deleting the whole thread #messages

Alex,

... is there any way to delete that one post? Or maybe better yet, edit out the offensive content?

Both options should be available to you (as a mod/owner) via the More menu:

If you choose to edit the message be aware that you'll have the option to resend the edited message to the group or not; but it will be emailed to the original poster (you don't have an option about that).

I did find where I could delete the whole thread but, oddly IMO, I was unable to find a function that would allow me to delete the one offending reply/
A moderator might not have those options, see the Edit Archives permission in each moderator's list of permissions. But having that permission should enable both editing/deleting messages as well as topics, so that wouldn't explain why you see one and not the other.

Delete a post without deleting the whole thread #messages

In, for example, a situation where one member replied on a thread with a reply that I don't want in the archive (Oh, say, it was off-topic, obscene,?or violated the intent of my group) is there any way to delete that one post? Or maybe better yet, edit out the offensive content?
?I did find where I could delete the whole thread but, oddly IMO, I was unable to find a function that would allow me to delete the one offending reply/
I say "oddly" because that (ability to delete individual posts from the archive) is there even in lame old yahoogroups.

Did I just not look in the right place?

Re: Profile Photo

Don,

I see some of our group members, have a thumbnail profile photo next
to their name in the Directory. Where are those thumbnails stored?
Account > Identity

There you'll find your Account Profile followed by profiles for each of your group subscriptions. When you join a group your Account Profile becomes the default for that group's description, but you can then tailor them for each group.

Click the blue Edit button (on the right) and you can upload a profile photo.

Does a picture have to be resized to thumbnail size or is it
automatically resized?
It is automatically resized, then cropped to square (centered).

Do they count against storage?
I don't think so, I think they're associated with the member's account, not with the group's storage. Also they aren't explicitly included in the list. They wouldn't be very big after resizing anyway.

Re: Joining in subgroup without waiting for approving parent group #membership #subgroups #suggestion

Pedja,

Thanks for this suggestion. I thought this is the right place to ask.
This is a good place to knock it about, get others' ideas and comments, and refine it. But ultimately beta is where suggestions must go to be seen by Groups.io management.

Re: Joining in subgroup without waiting for approving parent group #membership #subgroups #suggestion

I met this issue when i wanted to join the group, but I have some group set the same way: both main group and subgroup require approval. that is reasonable situation. Giving up that requirement is not solution. It is perfectly valid to require approval for main group and for subgroup to. Actually I do not remember I saw any other situation.

Later this day, as I recommended other people to join the same group they faced the same issue, plus - they were first time at groups.io, so they actually were unable to finish the process, as it was far to confusing to them. I had to instruct them what to do to be able to join.

I think it is very reasonable to make joining subgroup be merged to single process together with joining main group. Result is the same and it is far less confusing, as people do expect that if they want to join group they simply join. When they see that they cannot join because they are not member of some other group, that really stalls them, as this is very unusual situation they did not met before.

Subgroups are excellent option. It makes things much easier as it allows having all in one organized way instead creating several separate groups. but this issue makes thing quite confusing for users.

Groups.io site updates #changelog

Hi all,

This week's change log:

Feel free to reply to this topic if you'd like to comment on the
changes. Or better yet, if you expect a lot of discussion start a new
topic (or rejoin an existing one) about a specific change.

CHANGE: Condensed HTML message footers.
That reminds me I have a Wiki page I need to finish...

CHANGE: For groups not set to reply to group, display the receiver's
email address in the footer.
The purpose is to help with people who ask support to unsubscribe them, but then don't know the address that's subscribed (due to forwarding or general confusion).

I was wondering at first "why not in reply-to-group groups", but I think the answer is: "because sometimes replies quote the whole message, and sometimes the footer doesn't get stripped from such quotes."

CHANGE: For transfers of groups with more than 100,000 messages, we
ask for a year's premium subscription. Otherwise, we'll transfer the
100,000 most recent messages.
There's recently been discussion about this one:
/g/GroupManagersForum/topic/20417057
/g/GroupManagersForum/topic/20440584

Comments about these others are also welcome:

INTERNAL: Lots of optimization work on speeding up the creation of a
new message search index.
SYSADMIN: Built a new search cluster with additional needed capacity.
BUGFIX: When exporting an event with RSVPs that allow additional
guests, show the additional guest numbers.
BUGFIX: Fixed a database connection error with the Elasticsearch
importer that was waking me up at 3am the last couple of nights.
Zzzzzz.
CHANGE: Subscription Options and Muting & Following updates in the
help (thanks Shal and J!).
NEW: Treat 'Cvp:' as the same as Re: in message subjects (it's
Turkish).
CHANGE: Do not permit group names that begin or end in dash.
BUGFIX: The display of groups in the 'Your Groups' dropdown could
sometimes be wrong on the home page, based on how you were sorting
that page.
BUGFIX: Use the subgroup direct add message for direct adds.
Previously we were erroneously using the parent group direct add
message and ignoring any subgroup direct add messages.
BUGFIX: In the transfer interface, improved handling of how we scrape
Yahoo Groups in different languages.

Please call out any you find significant.

Re: Number of Groups.io Members

When you click on a members name in the Members list, it will have the
number in the address bar.
You can also see it by hovering over the Email button on each member's entry in the Directory. Or click there, but remember to discard the draft message if you don't want to send one.
