J,

In message #2155 you wrote:

Pesky ads... Apparently this hasn't happened yet:

I'm trying to resist the urge to be dismissive, but maybe you could take your phone to an Apple store and ask if there's a setting or something that would improve its display of inline quoted material. Or a way to file a bug report. And turn off the advertising.

I'm curious though, I would expect you would encounter the same problem with inline quoting in your Yahoo Groups and in any other emails where inline quoting is used. If not I wonder why -- but I'd likely need to view the HTML source of the message to see what's different.

Interesting. The coloring works fine for me in Firefox (Win10).

There may be browser settings that affect the history (and hence the
link coloring). In particular, if you use the Private Browsing mode then
no history is kept and therefor links can't be colored based on having
already been visited.
Thanks for this, after looking closely at my Firefox settings, that was indeed the problem. I.e. private browsing mode, with cookies enabled, can't accommodate the new / visited links change.

I wonder if there is an issue with some mobile browsers, with respect to
the browser history. Being generally more resource-constrained than
desktop browsers they may not keep as deep a browsing history. So old
messages may become new again in a shorter period of time.
Yes, and I suppose there would be the various browser settings again that would have a part to play in the final result..

Proposal for a change of wording in the statistics message.

¿ªÔÆÌåÓý

I have recently transferred a couple of groups from Yahoo to Groups.io

In the message sent to me about the statistics of the transfer, there were a few lines
resembling these ones :

w1cdo@...: Database Error
ik0vve@...
: Database Error

I asked what was the meaning of the "Database Error" message, and Mike told me
that those addresses were bouncing.

Wouldn't it be better to write that explicitly, instead of a generic "Database Error" ?

Thanks,

Groups.io site updates #changelog

Hi all,

The last two week's change logs:

Feel free to reply to this topic if you'd like to comment on the changes. Or better yet, if you expect a lot of discussion start a new topic (or rejoin an existing one) about a specific change.

* Completed utility to automatically delete old attachments for groups configured to do so and over their storage limits.

A bug while testing this one wiped out all the attachments in my PTA group - one of the 40 affected groups. Still thinking about what I want to do about it. I Suggested in beta@ that having an Attach ability in the message editor would let me put them back, and Mark has noted it in the to-do list but hasn't done it yet.

But even with that available it would be a tedious crank-turn to go and put them all back. Gathering them all together and uploading them to the Files section would be a bunch of work, but that's another option. I could edit the messages to add a note about where to find the (formerly attached) files; but again quite a bit of effort.

It would be nice to come up with a way to automate the process, but with only 40 groups affected I don't see Mark putting a lot of effort into it.

Ideas?

* Removed the p and offset URL query params from the subject links in the Messages View.

That one fixes a problem with the link coloring for "read" versus "unread" in the Messages list. It had been the case that using the Previous and Next buttons to move from message to message would not cause the messages to be "read" (that is, visited).

There are still some reported problems with this mechanism, observations that link coloring doesn't seem to be working with certain browsers, or on certain devices. I think those problems all resolve to issues with the Page history kept by users' browsers; as that's the mechanism used to distinguish "read" (visited) from "unread" (not visited).

* We were inconsistent in checking for invalid characters between adding new hashtags and editing existing hashtags. Also, we now allow apostrophes in hashtags.

This one fixes a problem reported in GMF by Jack, and eliminates the need for his work-around (create then edit the hashtag).

Comments about these others are also welcome:

* INTERNAL: Upgraded the Facebook API package and reconfigured the calls to work with the new version of the Facebook API.
* SYSADMIN: Fixed some redirect rules to from www. prefixed domains and from non-HTTPS URLs.
* NEW: Sent out warning notices to groups over storage limits.
* NEW: Started regular process of sending out notices to groups that are over 80% of their storage limits.
* NEW: Added a FAQ to the pricing page, including non-profit discount.
* NEW: Now logging when a banned member attempts to subscribe via email.
* BUGFIX: Crash fix when importing a table with out of range multiple choice answers.

* INTERNAL: More work on the API.
* CHANGE: Handle 'unknown-8bit' charset, treating it as utf-8.
* SYSADMIN: Increase available file descriptors for the web process
* CHANGE: Added 'SV:' as a subject reply indicator
* INTERNAL: Don't allow users marked as inactive to login or to be invited to groups.
* CHANGE: Changed the wording on the pending message notification email for existing messages to make it more clear.
* BUGFIX: Markdown code highlighting wasn't working on wiki pages.
* BUGFIX: Fix an issue where a line in a message could be displayed twice in the archives.

Please call out any you find significant.

Not unless he/she replies to you.

Unlike Y!Groups, moderators and owners in Groups.io have an option to
control receipt of +owner messages. Each mod or owner can elect to
receive all of them, only those from members, or none of them.

I usually recommend that at least one active moderator in every group
elect to receive them all so that would-be members can contact the group
admins if they're having trouble joining the group. That may also be
necessary for the admins to receive replies to a Pending member notice;
but I'm not sure about that.

Another way you might get their attention would be to join the groups. I
think J may have typo'd - I'm still seeing the groups with the
hyphenated name.

Joining those groups does not require approval, and then you could post
there. They have new member moderation turned on, but perhaps they're
more likely to notice a pending message from a member than a +owner
message sent by a non-member.

 > I registered instead two new groups with names EladSDR and

If you care about the group names, you might try at least joining the
hyphenated groups before initiating the transfer - unless there's a
reason for urgency. If it turns out that the owner of those groups is
cooperative they could rename theirs to something else, then you could
rename yours to the hyphenated name.

But if you make contact with them, ask them to rename those groups, not
delete them. If they delete the groups the names remain reserved and you
would have to petition Mark to release the names to you.

We migrated the SoftRock40 group a couple of weeks back with 8600 members and 87000 messages and it went pretty smoothly and transferred in less than a day.

Re: Names taken ? Apparently not...

Alberto,

being the owner of the two Yahoo groups elad_sdr_en and elad_sdr, I
tried to create two new groups on Groups.io with the intention of
transferring them. I was unable, with the error message saying that
those names were already taken....
I think J is right, the error message is faulty; it should tell you instead that the names contain a disallowed character.

... but if I list the names of the existing groups on Groups.io,
they are not there...
Your evidence is incomplete. Each group has the option of being in the directory or not; so those names may be taken even though not in the list. A better test is to form their address in the address bar of your browser:

/g/elad_sdr
/g/elad_sdr_en

Both get "Sorry, but that group does not exist." pages.

BTW, trying to create the two new groups, I changed the underscores
to the '-' character, so that is not the cause of the error...
It looks like someone beat you to the punch. Both of those groups do exist, and were created two days ago:

/g/elad-sdr
/g/elad-sdr-en

I'm not sure what your best course of action here is. It doesn't seem likely a coincidence, so the question is whether the person who created them is friendly or antagonistic towards you. As far as I know Groups.io doesn't have a policy regarding name squatting or determining who might be the proper "owner" of a group name, nor an established procedure for resolving disputes over group names.

The bottom of the home pages of the groups has a mailto: link to email the group's owner. You could try sending a message there to see if they'll tell you what's going on. Possibly they were created by one of your moderators or members acting with good intent to be sure the names were reserved.

Good luck!

Shal

Re: Names taken ? Apparently not...

J_Catlady

p.s. to my former reply (which has not come through yet due to the moderation in this group): The message says "Cannot contain spaces, pluses, slashes, periods, or underscores."

But it appears to also disallow dashes, based on what you've told us. Seems like another bug.

J

Re: Names taken ? Apparently not...

J_Catlady

Hi,

I went to the Create Group page to check this out, and the page now says that names can't contain underscores (they were formerly allowed - my group name contains them). So it seems that this is a bug in the error message. I would email [email protected]?and let Mark know, and then go back and create your names without the underscores.

Re: Highlighting read messages and a question on editing

PT,

As you mention, there seems to be a difference between viewing
messages in a list, viewing them individually by arrows at the
bottom,
That should now be fixed.

and viewing in an Expanded view...
I think you're right about that one. Only when the messages are viewed on their individual pages do their URLs get stored in your browser history, and that's what controls the link coloration when you look at the Messages list.

Chrome seems good for Android and Windows 7 and 10, but I'm not
getting anything on Firefox - no matter what I do, messages
stubbornly remain of the same color :))
Interesting. The coloring works fine for me in Firefox (Win10).

There may be browser settings that affect the history (and hence the link coloring). In particular, if you use the Private Browsing mode then no history is kept and therefor links can't be colored based on having already been visited.

Or if you (or your security software) delete your browsing history, you'll reset all your link coloration (everything is "new", that is "un-visited").

... and it looks like different system/browser combinations give
different results.
I wonder if there is an issue with some mobile browsers, with respect to the browser history. Being generally more resource-constrained than desktop browsers they may not keep as deep a browsing history. So old messages may become new again in a shorter period of time.

Re: Highlighting read messages and a question on editing

Thanks for your responses, appreciated.

I've been playing a bit more in regards to message links turning a different color after the message has been read. As you mention, there seems to be a difference between viewing messages in a list, viewing them individually by arrows at the bottom, and viewing in an Expanded view, and it looks like different system/browser combinations give different results.

Chrome seems good for Android and Windows 7 and 10, but I'm not getting anything on Firefox - no matter what I do, messages stubbornly remain of the same color :))

Of course, when messages are viewed in Expanded view, nothing seems to change on any system I've looked at so far, which I guess is understandable - it'd be difficult for a browser to tell which messages you have actually read out of the 50 or a hundred you have in a scroll window...

Thanks

My mistake.

Checking again it does seem to be working using Chrome on my Android. I'm not sure how I failed that check a little while ago.

Where "working" (here as elsewhere) means excluding the previous/next problem - using the nav arrows at the bottom of the message to read messages does not result in those message subjects turning black in the Messages list. But that at least is something Mark can fix (I think).

Highlighting for visited links is a browser feature, but Groups.io is using a style sheet to select the colors displayed for visited versus not visited links. The distinction is whether the message page is already in your browser's history or not.

E.g. I'm on Windows and Android, and there is no distinction between
messages that are new or old (read).
I hadn't noticed that, but for Chrome on Android you're right. But for Firefox on Win10 I'm seeing link coloring.

PT,

- is there a way to turn on / off the highlighting of the messages

No.

Some members are reporting that this is happening for them
automatically, but for others it is not.

Mark still has a residual problem with the links though. The ones in the Messages list have parameters on them which prevent them from matching the messages if you visit them by using the next/previous message buttons. I convinced him once to take those parameters off of the permalinks, hopefully they are unneeded in the Messages list as well.

- in regards to editing messages that were already posted - is there
a difference between how members receive them (once or twice)
The message is emailed when posted plus once per edit.

and does it depend on whether the editing is done by a moderator or
not?
A moderator has the option to save the edit without re-mailing the message. Members don't have that option.

E.g. if my subscription is on "No Email", then by all logic, there
should be no danger of seeing the same message twice (as it does not
appear on the mailing list twice and I don't get emails in the first
place).
Correct. The re-emailing of messages when edited follows the same rules as when the message is posted; including obeying each member's subscription settings.
