Maybe members of this group could add example databases (kinda ?like templates) to this group.

Is it possible to copy a database (really just one table) from one group ?to another?

Nope. Unlike Messages, Calendar or the Wiki, the Database (and the other?
web features) cannot be made publicly visible (i.e. non-members).

or advise what they have one in their group for?
In my alumni groups I've used them to keep a shared address book for our classmates, and an index of Yearbook pages for each classmate.

Sample database?

As a new comer to groups.io, wondering what a database might give me? Can anybody point me at a (public - i.e. one I don't have to join a group to look at) database for an idea, or advise what they have one in their group for?

I'm sure once I have the idea as to why, I'll be able to sort out the how (especially with the advice in the wiki).

Thanks,
Jeremy

Re: Moderator Permissions to use Features

Shal

Thanks. Not I think ideal - what I'd rather have is what you describe in /g/beta/message/5625 , which is how to my mind such permissions should be granted - hopefully that is something in the coming enhancements list.

Re: Transfer of archives from YahooGroups

ken,

I cannot make [email protected] a moderator in the old YahooGroups.
Only the list owner has that privilege.
A moderator could have that privilege, it is called "Add, remove, and change moderator privileges". But owners don't always give that one to any moderators.

Is there a workaround procedure for me as a moderator to transfer the
archives?
Ordinarily you'd need at least one active moderator with that privilege, or an active owner, in order to proceed. But you might check with [email protected] to see if there's any other way.

Maybe change my yahoogroups name to [email protected] ?
That wouldn't work. You'd have to change your email address (not profile or name), and to do that you'd have to verify that you receive email at that address. Which you don't.

However, you and Mark might conspire to do something of the sort. Or let him sign in under one of your existing moderator accounts.

Re: Moderator Permissions to use Features

Jeremy,

And hence that there is no means of giving a moderator the ability to
do one such but not another (e.g. may upload photos but not edit
wiki)?
Correct.

Anything open to moderators but not controlled by one of the moderator permissions is open to all moderators.

Transfer of archives from YahooGroups

I am the moderator of a YahooGroups forum, however the group owner is no longer active.

I have created a new groups.io forum ready to transfer archives, however I cannot make
[email protected]

a moderator in the old YahooGroups. Only the list owner has that privilege.

Is there a workaround procedure for me as a moderator to transfer the archives?

Maybe change my yahoogroups name to [email protected] ?

Moderator Permissions to use Features

There are various Features that may be set (in Admin > Settings) to 'Moderator only' - such as calendar editing, file and photo uploading, wiki editing and chat starting - but which do not appear on the list of 'Moderator Permissions' (when setting someone as a moderator.

Does this mean that any moderator can do them, even if they have no (other) 'Moderator Permissions' set? And hence that there is no means of giving a moderator the ability to do one such but not another (e.g. may upload photos but not edit wiki)?

there is no indicator for file uploading activity - the upload box just sits there!

Any chance of a temperature type gauge / % / flashing light??

Re: Photos upside down

Shelley,

I hadn¡¯t posted the photos yet b/c they were all upside down and
sideways in the Add Photos control panel. But I have since posted
them, and they righted themselves.
Hmm... Then it sounds like the Add Photos could use improvement.

Of course, there were new frustrations¡ªthe photo uploader somehow
sees ALL of the original photos in the folder, including the ones I
permanently deleted (!) from my Photos library, ...
I'm not sure how this works on an iPad, but it sounds like Add Photos running in your browser accesses the file storage holding the photos, which may not be the same as what the Photos library app shows you.

and it flat-out refused to recognize the crops I had made (and saved)
on several, instead substituting the original, ...
Right.

I've had that problem with sharing or downloading photos from my Android phone. The adjustments made with its Photo app can be undone, leading me to suspect that the original must be retained in file storage, and the alterations made in memory or temporary files or something. Sharing initiated within the photo app itself seems to deliver the adjusted image, but in other circumstances you get the original.

I'm not sure this is something Groups.io can fix without having its own app in the phone, and maybe not then either.

But the photo album is up now.
Ok, good.

Hi Shal, thank you for the response.

Of course, there were new frustrations¡ªthe photo uploader somehow sees ALL of the original photos in the folder, including the ones I permanently deleted (!) from my Photos library, making it that much harder to re-find the photos I actually wanted to use; and it flat-out refused to recognize the crops I had made (and saved) on several, instead substituting the original, which I had to fix by opening and re-saving in Photoshop. Grrr. But the photo album is up now.

Yes.

Go to the photo's page and click the blue Edit button below the photo. There are rotate left and right buttons on the edit page, just below the image.

This has come up in relation to iPads before, but apparently it didn't get fixed. The software attempts to get the photo rotation correct based on the EXIF data, but formats vary so sometimes it doesn't get it right.

If you point these photos out in an email to [email protected] that may help get it fixed.

Photos upside down

Hi, hope this is the right place to post my question.

I am trying to upload a series of pics taken from my iPad. Unfortunately, most of the pictures show up sideways or upside down. I understand that iOS includes EXIF data, coding the orientation of the iPad when the picture was taken. But how do I correct for it? I can¡¯t go into my photo editing software and rotate the image, because my editing software all recognizes the photo as being right side up already and rotating the photo just makes it sideways in the image editor.

Is there any way to rotate after uploading to a group album?

Re: Setting defaults for user profiles?

Patti,

Can you direct me to where to set defaults for their group
subscription?
In your group's Settings page there's a tab (row of buttons near the top) for "Default Sub Settings".

Also, on my test account, the timezone was set to Pacific Time, I am
in South Carolina. I was using my mobile phone with my home wifi, so
not sure what that means for my IP address.
Oops, I missed this one:
* CHANGE: Defaulted users to America/Los_Angeles timezone.

I'm surprised no one in beta@ called him on that. I'm surprised I didn't pay it any attention. I don't know what prompted that change; maybe the lookup for location from IP address became too error-prone or something.

You could bring it up in beta@ to see if he has something to say about the change.

If he can't put it back I'd suggest adding Timezone to the things in Default Sub Settings, with the rule that it only applies if that member hasn't yet set a time zone (either manually through their profile, or as a default from a previously joined group).

The option should have a default of "None" so that only groups that expect their members to be local would have this effect.

For their group subscription yes, but not for their login profile.

I think that should happen automatically. If the user hasn't set a timezone (e.g. first login) the site attempts to determine their location from their IP address.

For their group subscription yes, but not for their login profile.

For example our group is local, I would like to have their time zone
default to Eastern time so that the calendar shows the correct times.

Re: In-line quoting versus iPhones and other email interfaces

J,

I have to go there today anyway, as it happens, for other reasons. I
can ask. However, remember that others have reported the same
difficulty, even in this group.
I do remember. If you find that there's a solution that may benefit everyone using the iPhone's native mail application.

No, this doesn't happen with other inlining.
Intriguing.

But absent an iPhone I don't have a way to see what's different about other examples of inline quoting.

maybe you could take your phone to an Apple store and ask if there's a setting or something that would improve its display of inline quoted material. Or a way to file a bug report.

I would expect you would encounter the same problem with inline quoting in your Yahoo Groups and in any other emails where inline quoting is used. If not I wonder why?

I don't use yahoo groups any more (except for once in a blue moon) and I don't access them on my phone. No, this doesn't happen with other inlining.

What advertising???

Re: Proposal for a change of wording in the statistics message.

Alberto,

I asked what was the meaning of the "Database Error" message, and
Mike told me that those addresses were bouncing.

Wouldn't it be better to write that explicitly, instead of a generic
"Database Error" ?
I agree, it would be.

If you haven't already, you should reply to Mark about that. But I'll bet he's already on it, just from your question.

For what it is worth, Mark isn't a member of GMF, and wouldn't likely see a suggestion like that posted here. We're strictly user-to-user group for questions and advice. The official "suggestion box" for Groups.io is the beta group:
