Shal &? Ginny,
Groups.io is essentially an approved bulk mail provider and acts as a relay.? Everyone who joins your group contributes their email address to the group.? When someone posts a message to your group,:
? ? ? ? ?All those who have set their options to receive individual emails are sent a copy of that email
But wait, there's more!
? ? ? ? All those who only wish to receive digests, receive digests when sufficient postings have accumulated.
? ? ? ? And finally all those who wish no emails do not receive any.
With over half million members, groups.io essentially has license for bulk mailings? otherwise it would have seized up and failed after setting up the first few groups.io .
I use mailchimp for newsletters and other large mailings and it is essentialy a glorified smtp relay but it requires that I track bounces and ensure that I don't generate too many.
Groups.io handles bounces for me.? Deciding what to do with them and subsequently never attempting a new message send to one.
It seems to me that an smtp relay is redundant to a group but I certainly wish to understand more if it isn't redundant
PLEASE, educate me.
