If people join here before a transfer, I don't think the files and photos will be connected to them once those are done.?

That's not a problem. Unless they joined under a different email address than they had in the Y!group.

If the owner isn't 'found', they get attributed to the group owner.

That's what happens when the email address associated with that content isn't present in the Groups.io group at the time that content transferred over. Subscribing ahead of the transfer isn't a problem.
