Having done the preliminaries, I went in to his account and changed the email address and then clicked on "SAVE" at the end. After waiting a bit, the system comes back up the the email address box and gives the error message, "That email address is already registered."

The new email address is not in use in the group in question. What's happening and what have I not done correctly?
You've done nothing wrong; it's just that he's already begun using that new email address somewhere within groups.io.?

If he has a password set up for the original sbcglobal.net address, he can still log in and merge accounts. You can't do that for him.

If he doesn't have a password set up for the older account (and thus cannot log in), or if he's not comfortable with the account merge process (which has its own quirks, see ) things get more problematic. The simplest path forward is probably to just Direct Add him a second time using his new email address. Whether you subsequently remove the bouncing sbcglobal subscription is up to you.

Hope this helps,
Bruce
