Is this something new and is there any way to prevent this from happening?
Yes and maybe.? This is part of the new notifications system.? You can read about it at and .? Based on my understanding, it's not something I'll want to use much, if any, but each member will be able to select which notifications they'll get.? There will doubtless be other growing pains as this is rolled out.
On your group, find the (new) #wiki-notice hashtag and edit it (click Edit Tag) by checking the No Email box, then saving the change.? This should prevent it from sending a message to the group.? As a backup, you may also want to turn on the Moderated setting so it would need to be approved before it would post.? At that point, you could just delete it.
This will also occur for #file-notice (uploads) and #photo-notice (uploads), so you may want to create those tags and preemptively change the settings.? Those are the ones I'm aware of, but there isn't a complete list yet (that I know of).
