I contacted the owner and he replied that as far as he can knows, he left the default settings when he created the group. He removed the Force HTML option on his group and I was able to make the switch to Plain Digest.
But I still don't understand why a group NEEDS to have the ability to NOT let me choose the format for a digest I'm going to read. I LIKE not having live links in my digests, and if a subscriber has trouble with getting his/her preferred format of digest, the group owner should be able to steer them in the right direction. As you can see, I don't like being told what I want.
