Now, this is interesting.
I temporarily set the group to allow posts from non-members, and
sent a message from an unsubscribed email address.
I got a message that moderation was required for that message, as
you would expect.
I replied to the notice, which should release it, it didn't.
Went onto the PENDING page, it showed that test message, ticked
it and selected APPROVE. That message unticked itself and remained
in the list!
So clearly, there is something blocking message posts at a low
system elve. I wonder if an internal setting that is used to
stop posts temporarily during the import process, got left on or
something??
