Changing, even slightly, the message topic can interfere with the Mute Topic feature?
Marina --?When someone creates a new topic, that topic is assigned a number. If you click on the link at the bottom of a message that says "View all xx messages in this topic," you can even see the number in the address bar of your browser. Subsequent replies that meet threading criteria (see?/g/GroupManagersForum/wiki/Avoiding-threading-topics---threading-algorithm) receive the same topic number.

When a topic is muted, messages having that topic number are no longer emailed to the person doing the muting.

If you merge the muted topic into another one, those messages are assigned a new topic number (i.e.: the number of the topic they were merged into). Subsequent replies to that topic -- when posted online -- will also have that new number. Similarly, if another message comes in via email using the subject line of the topic you merged (which subject lines is now gone from the message archive), it now becomes a new topic, and is also assigned a new topic number. In either case those messages are no longer being muted.

I hope I'm being clear.

Changing the subject line of an incoming message even slightly can have the same effect.* If that edit causes the new message to no longer meet the criteria of the threading algorithm, a new topic is generated -- with a new topic number. Such topics will have to be muted separately.

It seems reasonable to expect fewer muting problems if you and your moderators resist the urge to merge (or split), and edit message subject lines with a lighter hand. At the same time, it's my experience that few subscribers actively use the muting function. Only you can decide which is more important for your group dynamics.?

Hope this helps,
Bruce
