Re: Managing main group

Each group and subgroup is pretty much independent as far as moderation and other settings.? The only restriction is that everyone must be a member of the main group before they can join a subgroup.

Other than explaining which group/subgroup is intended for certain posts, there's no explicit way to keep folks from posting in the wrong one.? There are a lot of settings that each member can choose as far as which posts they get.? Take a look at /static/help#subscription-options and the sections just below it about muting and following.

If it were me, I'd probably set up the General Discussion as the main group, then all the others as subgroups.? Then I'd set the Default Sub Settings for all of them to "Individual Messages" and "Following Only" with "First Message Also" selected.? With those settings, each person would get the first message of any thread, but after that they'd only get any they choose to follow.? You may find that other settings are better suited to your group, so look through all the options to see what might work best.

There are many options available on GIO, so it can take awhile to determine which are the best for any given group/subgroup.
