...but now both messages came straight after to the group so everyone will be really confused. ... For future reference, is there anything I should do to prevent this happening with future messages?

When creating the event, uncheck Send Invite To Group.

Also, if you didn't, check Send Notice To Group When Event Happens rather than adding any reminders. That way it is posted at the date/time you chose for the event rather than in advance.
