Hi everybody,
I'm very happy with how things went on Saturday. We have 37 form letters signed and ready to go.
That's one letter every 6 1/2 minutes! Fantastic.?
It would never have happened without Patti, who presented the idea,
supplied some of the materials, and demonstrated the process with enthusiasm.
I am grateful to her as well as to Andrea, Jen Smith, Greg Cook and
Rhonda Connell, who all came by and helped out.
Now, can we do this in other towns
and cities?
The Fredericton
market was a proof of concept. I think it went very well and demonstrated that
people care more about?municipal reform than some of us may have thought.
Does anyone want to do something similar in their own city?
It would be great to have a table in Saint John, for example.
Please write back if you're willing to give it a try. Patti or I can
explain what you need and how to go about it.
I'm holding back on mailing the letters until I find out if similar
events will take place in other cities. That way, we can co-ordinate our
mailing days for maximum impact.
Thanks and enjoy the beautiful day.

Hi, folks.
Me again, just writing to remind you to join this short session a little before 8:00 p.m. ?tonight - that¡¯s about 15 minutes from now.
Don¡¯t forget to have your Christmas Card to Justin Trudeau to hold up beside your smiling face!
The safest way to join the group is to click on the link in your latest email from Anita.
Attached is a copy of my selfie which I¡¯ll endeavour to replicate for our collage.
Hope to see you online shortly before 8:00.

Hi again, folks.? Anita Nickerson has kindly agreed to set me up to host a New Brunswick meeting of folks wanting to send a Christmas card to Santa Justin expressing our wish to receive a PR electoral system from the Jolly Old Elf this Christmas.
These are the details:
Date: Friday, December 11th, 2020
Time: 8:00 p.m. Atlantic Standard Time. ?(I expect to email the invitation to join about ten minutes before then; please sign in at least five minutes early so that I can admit you to the event on time.)
Link:?
Passcode for meeting: 245368
All you neeed to participate is a Christmas Card to send to Mr. Trudeau, which you will hold up beside your face (to be included in a huge collage of PR supporters).
The meeting is expected to last only about ten minutes, perhaps less.
You can join at the last minute, if you wish.? The more the merrier.? Your family, friends, pets, etc. are all welcome!
If you have any friends who wish to be included in the invitation, please send me the email address for them by noon on Friday.
Hope you can join us for this virtual flash mob.
Yours in common cause.
John Filliter
Great! So pick a day and time - Thursday evening or Friday evening. At this late stage, I'd suggest John just pick whichever one he can show up for because we're out of time for doodle polls.?
Feel free to invite family and pets (seriously - Gisela has given us some nice pictures with dogs).?
Halifax Rick invited his family so there would be enough people for a photo - whatever works!?
What we're doing is putting human faces of people who want a Citizens'?Assembly on Electoral?Reform on the 8300 cards that are going to Trudeau already.?
On December 12 we'll be sharing all the pictures on social media (facebook, twitter and Instagram) at this hashtag #MakeYourVoiceHeard.
Jenice Atwin has made a short video saying "yay" (basically) we will share, and I am awaiting similar videos promised by Nathaniel and Daniel (fingers crossed!)
We're also doing this in parallel with our UK counterparts - Make Votes Matter - same hashtag that day - so the idea is to get that hashtag busy!
As soon as I get a date and time I'll set it your meeting and we can all share the link with whoever might be persuaded to come!?
You can bring a regular holiday card or print off a picture of the one you ordered online or make something - it doesn't matter. (If you get really creative as a few people have, we'll share a close up of your card, too! :)
Thanks again, everyone!
Anita

Re: Form letter to local governance reform team
Fair Vote Canada promotes PR at all levels, where there are interested supporters to do so. In general: In the last year we did several things related to municipal?local choice in Ontario:?
I'm also still working with the group in Guelph on a year long local campaign to keep two members wards so that when we get a non-Ford government, and Guelph consults on ranked ballots, we can win PR-STV there.
In the last BC election we promoted what provincial parties supported local choice:
Currently, we are working in BC on Local Choice some more. Fair Vote Vancouver got a resolution passed at city council and now there is a vote coming up tomorrow at the BC Lower Mainland Government Association.(which we're likely going to lose).
Here's the gist about Fair Vote Canada and municipal proportional representation for anyone new:
Fair Vote Canada doesn't support winner-take-all systems at ANY level. That is outside our mandate.
So, we don't get involved in promoting just "ranked ballot" with no qualifier, like Fair Vote USA messaging and some other groups.
And we definitely stay out of campaigns for Instant Run-Off Voting in cities with single member wards.
Many of our supporters would see run-off voting as an improvement and want to campaign for it in their city with single member wards. Which is fine of course. They can do that in a group independent of Fair Vote Canada.? Such as 123 Group. Dave's campaigns for run-off voting in London or Toronto would be examples - many of our folks were involved in those outside FVC.
As long as a FVC group/chapter is campaigning for local choice so we can make PR-STV possible somewhere in the province in future, we're fully supportive. Some cities in NB have multi-member wards already, so your campaign is a lot like the one we have done in Ontario, laying the groundwork for PR-STV one day in some places.
Anyway, if you are collecting names on a petition that says "Fair Vote Canada New Brunswick" on it, the names should come to Fair Vote Canada, so I can add those people to our list.?
Just like when someone signs a petition in Ontario or BC related to provincial campaigns... because you're part of Fair Vote Canada.
What many other groups would do is add another checkbox to the petition saying "Do you want to volunteer" or "Do you want to get involved locally?"?
Then you can also add those names to your local group (this one! :), for people that want to get more involved in the day to day, not just get emails from our mailing system about major events.
Does that make sense?
Anita

I don't think that's going to work,?Anita. I'll want to add them to this list, FairVoting4NB. If we tell them we're giving their info to 2 groups, they'll be less likely to sign up. Anyway, Fair Vote Canada doesn't do municipal stuff, which is what this is.
I would say you're agreeing to get updates from Fair Vote Canada. Then if you send me the info on a google spreadsheet I can add them to our database so when I send out mailings for your group to NB they will get them.
You need to add a requirement for a postal code. Otherwise they won't get NB stuff from me because the system won't know where they are.
Cheers,

Hi Patti,
Looks good to me. Thanks for doing all this. What do you think about
having another phone conversation? I want to discuss what we should say to
people, how we get them interested. Also: do we need a privacy written down?
Just something like: "Fair Voting for NB will never share, trade or sell
your information. We will use your contact information to send you updates. You
can unsubscribe at any time." It may make some people more comfortable
about putting their info on the letters and sign-up sheets.

Hi everyone,
Here's my second
draft on a letter to the?local governance reform team. I'd like your
input.?
The plan: on May
15, from 8 to 12:30, Patti and I will be outside the Boyce Farmers Market,
asking people to sign copies. We hope to get enough to mail them out in
strategic batches, so that the reform team will find it hard to ignore us.
I'll also be
posting it on social media and encouraging people to either print it out and
snail-mail it, or copy the text and email it.
If anyone else can
volunteer to spend some time outside the farmers market on May 15, that would
be much appreciated.
I think we should
also take advantage of the elections having just happened by then. I would like
to have a sign on the table to call attention to this. Something like, "So
how did you like your local election?" Only better than that. Does anyone
have ideas?

Re: Form letter to local governance reform team
I would say you're agreeing to get updates from Fair Vote Canada. Then if you send me the info on a google spreadsheet I can add them to our database so when I send out mailings for your group to NB they will get them.
You need to add a requirement for a postal code. Otherwise they won't get NB stuff from me because the system won't know where they are.
Cheers,
Anita

Re: Form letter to local governance reform team
Hi Vivian - that is so cool!? I
definitely think that another phone conversation is in order.? Perhaps a
call as early as you can.
?
In the meantime, I am about to print
labels - about 100(?) and letters.? I have also purchased envelopes.?
And the sign in sheets - I will add the privacy blurb.? I will also try to
pick up some stamps.
I hope the weather holds out.
?
Personally, I'd rather you do the talking,
because I am just too unfamiliar with NB stuff yet.?
?
I hope we don't get rain!? I do not
have an umbrella and we don't want our stuff getting all wet.? Remember my
table is only a little 2 seater glass bistro table.?
?
I plan on putting together a 'supply box'
- black marker, stapler, tape, pens, etc.? We will need to have hand
sanitizer and wipes for the pens.? And, I am just babbling!?
?
Could you send me a final, final copy of
the letter for printing.? I'll print 100 or so.
?
And Jen Smith, leadership candidate for
the NBNDP is willing to volunteer.? I will try to enlist another one or
two - keeping in mind that so far, most of my contacts are of the NDP variety.
LOL
?
In the midst of all this my cell phone
locked up on me.? I had to buy a new one, but still haven't been able to
transfer my contacts and photos to my new phone!!!? I am lost!?
Anyway, give me a call or please send me
your # again - I can't seem to find yours!? 777-4468? Cheers!?

By Wednesday/Thursday, I should have some
letters, labels printed out (maybe envelopes).? And I will donate some
stamps.? Feel free to change anything - just let me know.
Cheers!

Hi, attached is the first draft of the sign-in
sheet.? I left mailing address out, figuring it would take up a lot of space
and, realistically, will we be snail-mailing to our contacts?? But, since this
is a provincial group, would we want to ask what provincial riding/constituency
they are in?? Before I print out lables/envelopes, is this the correct mailing
address:?
Attn: Local Governance Reform Team
New Brunswick Ministry of Local Governance
Reform
20 McGloin Street, 2nd Floor
