Hi everybody,

For instance, I am personally not sold on ranked ballots except for the position of mayor, or within a political party, for leader.
The main point John added, from what I recall, is that PR increases turnout. This is absolutely true for federal and provincial elections; I'm not sure whether or not it will prove true for municipal elections. My experience up to this point has been that people don't care much about municipal politics--unfortunately. Will giving them a better electoral system make them care more? I don't know. That's part of the reason I don't want to add this to the form letter--not that John asked me to. I think he was just showing us what he was going to mail.
The other reason is that any other additions will push it onto a second page, and I want a one-page form letter. Anything more than that, and we may be asking too much of people on their way to or from the market.
When it comes to municipal elections, at least in NB, there are no political parties, and that limits your options. Without parties, MMP is out. But ranked ballots are an option, and you CAN make a PR system with them. Not everyone realizes this. They think ranked ballots have to be winner-take-all, because that's what Trudeau meant when he talked about them. He contributed to a lot of confusion--and I wouldn't be surprised if he did it on purpose. On Wed, 5 May 2021 at 11:02, Patti Chmelyk < patti@...> wrote: Fantastic!? I certainly can do a sign-up form - thinking name, address, e-mail, and perhaps phone (although, for me, I detest giving out my phone number - all those years in Brampton with a dozen duct-cleaning calls per day!)? Re the other cities, let's wait for the response from Freddy.? We should have a donation can to help pay for the postage.? Just ask for change -loonies, twoonies, etc.? Thoughts??
Definitely we'll want name and e-mail address. Maybe a column for: Want to volunteer? Y or N. Address and phone number are optional. I suppose it's good to get them in case we want to do mailings or phonings in the future, but I don't think we're going to want to do that any time soon. Patti, do we need to be concerned that we'll scare people away if we ask for too much info?
I was also thinking we should have a donation jar for postage. After all, postage is a lot more expensive than it used to be, and if we're successful, all those stamps will add up. I have lots of jars of various sizes. I can bring one. On Wed, 5 May 2021 at 11:46, John Filliter < johndfilliter@...> wrote: One other point that occurred to me today is that it might have been wise for me to suggest at the end that the legislation might provide this as an electoral option to municipalities.
To my mind, that's what the letter already says. First it says to "give municipalities the option" to use ranked ballots. At the end it says, "allow for ranked ballots." It's not as if it says, "replace single-vote ballots with ranked ballots for all municipalities."
Thanks everyone, Vivian?

singing from the same song-book.? For instance, I am personally not sold on ranked
ballots except for the position of mayor, or within a political party, for

I just want the committee to consider all fair-voting options for
municipalities.? Ergo, I think our letter should reflect that.? If individuals
have some of their own thoughts, then, by all means, they should communicate
that to the committee themselves.? FairVoting4NB should reflect the group
desire for fair voting change.? Again, that's just my thoughts - I certainly
don't want to seem dictatorial - which I've been told I often do seem that way
- though not my intension.? LOL

ALL fantastic?ideas and views. I agree with the group...you do GREAT WORK, Vivian!? I concur...THANK-YOU for ALL the work that?you do.

I love the snail mail en mass idea, Patti...ALL the Activists in New Brunswick need more effective tools, as the municipal and provincial governments tend to ignore anyone fighting for?justice (environmental or otherwise), climate?change action, etc....basically, they ignore anyone who is anti-irving (small "i" intentional).
I, too, would appreciate a copy of the template letter.? It sounds like a planned snail mail "attack" is the way to go. Let me/us know how you would like to proceed. ?:O)

It's possible to send snail mail to the minister:

that in mind,?send mine my snail mail and try to encourage the snail mail

up on their website to send a PR card to Justin Trudeau, and FVC sent all those
cards in their names themselves. They delivered all the cards in a truck. But
that's a hell of a lot of work.

So my impression
is that nobody?is really interested in a Zoom meeting. That's fine. I
think in any case that what I'd like to do, once I finish reading the green
paper, is write my own email to the Minister. I can then use that as a template
that other people can copy in writing their own email. I'll post about this on
the FB page and group and on Twitter. I hope you'll all send your own emails
too.
I think that
emails from a bunch of people will have more impact than, say, one email with a
bunch of signatures, like we did for the email to?Higgs.
If you think this
is a good plan, we can go with this rather than having a Zoom discussion about
what to do.
I'm hoping that
people won't dismiss this as unimportant just because it's municipal. I've read
that municipalities will be essential in responding to the climate crisis. They
won't be able to respond effectively as long as we continue electing
complacent, status-quo candidates with our terrible electoral system.

I wrote it last week, but nothing super-interesting has happened since. I still
haven't quite finished the green paper. I've hit a boring stretch. I hope to
get through it soon; certainly before our Zoom call.
Hi

I hope
all is well with you and yours.

Take
care and enjoy your evening,
Hi everyone,
As you may know, I
sent an email to Keith Chiasson about adding provisions for ranked ballots to
his bill concerning changes to the Municipal Elections Act. He's interested.
We've had lively discussions, both by phone and Zoom. I'll be sending more
information on that later.
He let me know
that the government?has released a green paper on municipal reform and is
looking for public input. There's nothing in there on electoral reform in
particular (no surprises there), but that doesn't mean we can't raise the
issue.
Is anyone
interested in having a Zoom meeting about how we can best seize the moment? If
so, let me know your availability.

information, read the green paper and watch a video at?

Re: [fair-vote-fredericton] Minister of Local Governance Reform is looking for public input
Yes, I'm hoping hard that this election will get rid of some of those old bozos we have on city council. It would be great if we could get a change?of mayor too. I want Corrine Hersey.

I'm hoping that

sent an email to Keith Chiasson about adding provisions for ranked ballots to
his bill concerning changes to the Municipal Elections Act.
You can find more
information, read the green paper and watch a video at?
Hoping to hear
from at least some of you,

Re: [fair-vote-fredericton] Minister of Local Governance Reform is looking for public input
Interesting... I don't think I ever got an acknowledgment of my card.

I was thrilled to receive a letter of acknowledgement from the PMO, ackowledging receipt of my Christmas card and assuring me that my views would receive due consideration.
Signed by some minion, of course.
I was surprised to see that their envelope was run through a postage meter.? I thought they enjoyed free postage too.
¡°Free¡±, as in paid for by tax payers, that is!

It's possible to send snail mail to the minister: "20 McGloin Street, 2nd Floor, Fredericton, New Brunswick, E3B 5H1, attention Local Governance Reform Team," it says on the website. I'll keep that in mind,?send mine my snail mail and try to encourage the snail mail option. I don't think it will be practical to distribute pre-printed letters during a pandemic. FVC did something similar for Christmas: people could sign up on their website to send a PR card to Justin Trudeau, and FVC sent all those cards in their names themselves. They delivered all the cards in a truck. But that's a hell of a lot of work.

They won't be able to respond effectively as long as we continue electing complacent, status-quo candidates with our terrible electoral system. Great! I'd started to think nobody would respond. Are you available next week? I've got lots of free time. As long as I'm writing, I may as well attach my latest report on the status of electoral reform in New Brunswick. I wrote it last week, but nothing super-interesting has happened since. I still haven't quite finished the green paper. I've hit a boring stretch. I hope to get through it soon; certainly before our Zoom call. ?
