Hi Ron,

I was speaking with Maurice and he suggested I contact you.? I am a member for the Concord Civil Air Patrol squadron.? We have a gas powered tug in our hangar.? I have used it a few times over the past 10 years to move our 182 in/out of the hangar.? It needs a little TLC (probably a tune-up and a new tire or tube), but it has run fairly recently. Anyone who is even a little bit handy will be able to get it running like a champ. ?

Anyway, we find it to be more work to take it out, start it, and hook it up than it is to just move the airplane by hand as we usually have an aircrew that can work together to quickly move the aircraft.? With that said, I’m sure there are pilots that can put it to good use.? Can you (or do you know someone) who can make use of the tug?? It is free to a good home.

Thanks,
Eric

Saturday October 31st Grumman Event

开云体育

Good morning to All,

This Saturday at 9:00 am, there will be a wash and wax party on the East ramp at Buchanan Field. Specifically we will be cleaning up and polishing a Grumman AA1A that has been donated to the Chapter I should say that the donor-Andre- has committed to donating the plane and Scott Achilles is spearheading the acquisition of the Aircraft. Once the documentation has been completed, Scott will be the project manager in regards to the sale of the aircraft. Scott has already met with Andre acquired the logbooks, performed a cursory “civilian” inspection of the aircraft and started it up.
This is an other opportunity for like minded aviation folk to get together, have coffee and and donuts which will be supplied and swap stories while cleaning up the aircraft. No need to RSVP to this email ([email protected]), but if you want coffee and donuts please RSVP to my email address which is rjlbap@.... If you want to send me a text, my number is 925-395-0672.
I want to give a shout out to former MDPA President Maurice Gunderson for sending Andre our way, thank you Maurice!

Have a great day!

EAA 393 October Social Event At The Greenery Restaurant In Walnut Creek October 25th, 2020 @ 5:30pm

开云体育

Greetings to All,

I hope this message finds you in good health and good spirits-now that the smoke is gone, we can now take a deep breath of clean air!?
Lucy Hart and Pete Mitchell have gone scouting for a place for our chapter to meet in person and swap flying stories. This month they went to The Greenery in Walnut Creek. Please see the attached email from Lucy for her description of the restaurant. We are making reservations for Sunday the 25th at 5:30. The weather should be a bit cooler, so we ask for the balcony with the option of eating inside if it is too cold to eat outside. Please RSVP to lucyhart552@...?if you would like to attend.
Please note that the regular EAA Chapter 393 general meeting will be held on October 28th at 7:00 via Zoom.?

Hi Ron,

Pete and I just got back from the Greenery Restaurant on Marchbanks Dr. in Walnut Creek. It was a balmy night and just perfect weather. We sat out on the balcony, which had seven tables on it, socially distanced. The food was good and it was a delightful experience, watching Mt. Diablo until it got dark and then seeing some lights. We thought it would work for our group if we can reserve the whole balcony so we can talk amongst ourselves. I'll let you talk to Pete about it and then make a decision?about it. The restaurant told me yesterday they will reserve places for groups. I can check with them tomorrow if they will let us reserve the balcony. It was Saturday night tonight and it wasn't full. So, hopefully, they would let us reserve?the balcony.

Let me know tomorrow what your thoughts and if I should try to reserve the balcony for the 25th.

Lucy

Request: 100,000 N95 masks to Eugene OR Saturday for Firefighters

Subject: Request: 100,000 N95 masks to Eugene OR Saturday for Firefighters

?

Fellow Pilots:

CalDART requests assistance from IFR pilots for a flight Saturday to Eugene Oregon to help Fire Fighters and other front line workers who are using up their KN95 face masks due to all the days of smoke. CalDART is answering the call for assistance from Direct Relief, America’s largest supplier of free donated medical supplies (see directrelief.org). They have called upon us to transport 100,000 KN95 masks and assorted tubs of medical supplies and a couple of passengers to Eugene (KEUG) Oregon on Saturday, originating from Santa Barbara (KSBA), California. Normally, commercial shipment is adequate for their needs, but for this operation, they have requested our volunteer air support. It will be helpful for us to have a larger operation like this to build our response capabilities.

?

Here is the current description of the operation, with more details to be filled in this week: Something like 10 to 20 flights from Santa Barbara to Eugene will be needed, depending on the type and capacity of planes responding, and some trial loadings our Santa Barbara pilots are doing tomorrow and Friday. IFR Pilots will have the choice of flying the entire route, or choosing the Southern Half or the Northern Half. The Southern Half will consist of flying from Santa Barbara to the home base of the pilot flying the Northern Half, where that home base is south of Chico and likely in the Bay Area or Sacramento area. Pilots may work out alternate handoff arrangements if agreed to by both pilots. A transfer point has also been arranged at the Sonoma Jet Center (KSTS) for pilots coming down from Oregon who need a spot to rendezvous with SoCal pilots coming north. Participating California pilots will need to be CalDART members and submit the required intake information to CalDART Flight Operations. We ask interested pilots to reply to me on this email with their indication of interest. Pilots should indicate whether they are available to fly the whole route, only the Northern Half, only the Southern Half, and whether they are willing to take passenger(s) in a flight where all occupants where masks (including the pilot). Pilots whose offers are accepted will need to submit a variety of documentation regarding insurance, pilot certificate, and the like. Pilots who have already participated in Operation Medical Shield will keep their flight authorization for Saturday’s flight without having to submit more documentation. The 1 or 2 passengers to be flown will need roundtrip transportation Saturday, so their pilots need to be ok with flying both halves in a single day. Southern Half pilots are encouraged to get an early start so that the Northern Half pilots can get back home well before sunset. We will be operating a service desk on the ramp at Santa Barbara, checking in pilots, providing them their cargo/passengers, and sending their departure time to Flight Ops, and Eugene. Pilots pairing with another pilot should communicate in the morning to confirm rendezvous time, place, and alternate airport information.

?

The cargo will mostly be kn95 face masks, 70 tubs worth, 33.3 pounds each, 30.4”L x 20.3”W x 15.0” H, approx. 1400 masks per tub. Information on the additional tubs will be forthcoming. Information on passenger weights and their baggage will be forthcoming. Planes with passengers will have a requirement for all people to wear a mask including the pilots. Masks will also be required out on the ramp and in the FBO at Santa Barbara, Eugene, and the transfer point for pilots coming from Oregon.

?

FBO Information: The FBO at Santa Barbara is Signature aviation. Authorized pilots will be given a window sign and further instructions on where to park and load. We expect the ramp to be open from 8:00AM until the last pilot has loaded somewhere around noon to 2:00PM. Pilots who decide to use the transfer point at the Sonoma Jet Center in Santa Rosa should let CalDART Flight Ops know so that they can have your goodie bag waiting for you. We are still working on the FBO details for Eugene.

?

The weather has been smoky in Eugene for several days, with visibility near IFR minimums. The ILS at KEUG has the best minimums, followed closely by the GPS approach. There is a weak storm forecast to arrive tomorrow and Friday, with a little bit of showers likely Saturday as well. So, if the rain and wind clear out the smoke, the weather may be an issue. All responding pilots should be IFR rated/current/ready in the plane they will be flying Saturday. Even if they are only flying the Southern Half, smoke result in IMC on the way. Don’t forget to have an alternate ready in Oregon and central California with extra gas, and think about its likelihood to be resistant to smoke and weather. Pilots at Santa Barbara will be given KN95 masks for themselves and for the next flight if they are just flying the Southern Half. These KN95 masks may help reduce irritation due to forest fire smoke in the cabin. Be sure to navigate around the TFRs that are in effect between Santa Barbara and Eugene.

?

CalDART is taking this opportunity to request donations which can be provided at caldart.org at the Join/Renew page, or the Donate page. Our expenses have exceeded donations and membership revenue by about $9,500 this year, and we would appreciate generous donations from those who can give and who feel we are doing good things. To donate, visit the Donate/Friend page at caldart.org.

?

We need a couple more people to volunteer to work in flight operations for this event. Flight operations people do intake on volunteering pilots, put together load plans for each aircraft, send pilot rosters to the participating airports, check on flight progress to verify that each flight has completed and the pilot is home safe. We work remotely with Google Documents.

?

A reminder, if you are interested, please reply email to me and indicate:

·???????? Yes, you’re interested

·???????? What type of plane you have

·???????? Confirm you are IFR rated/current/ready in the plane you will fly

·???????? Are you willing to fly the Southern Half, Northern Half, or entire route?

·???????? Is it ok to carry passenger(s) and wear masks in the plane?

?

Hello Everyone….

Well… we’re almost there. On Tuesday, September 8, 2020 we begin the process of making aviation and Post Office history. ?If all goes according to plan, Christopher Freeze, flying a Cessna 182 (N610DB), and?Warren Morningstar and Keith West flying AOPA's Beech Bonanza camera plane (N4GA) will depart Farmingdale, NY’s Republic Airport sometime shortly after 7 AM. Their destination is Bellefonte, PA. They won’t be landing exactly where Randolph Page, flying US Mail plane No. 102, set down 100 years ago. ?Tom Beaver’s farm field is now part of the city, but the town fathers did build a nice airport south and west of the town. Labeled N96 on pilot sectional maps, it will be the focal point of a larger community celebration honoring the 100th anniversary of transcontinental airmail service. ?Bellefonte enjoys the honor of being the US Post Office’s first airfield west of New York as it expanded from its Long Island base towards Cleveland, OH in late 1918. ?It is also home to the American Philatelic Society Museum, which includes a collection of air mail memorabilia. Messrs Freeze, Morningstar and West are slated to arrive around 9:40 or so. You’ll be able to follow their progress on the??website under the Flight Follow tab. Waiting form them is slated to be Gene Salvatore as primary pilot and Jonathan Still as backup for the next leg of the relay.

Attached below?is the current slate of volunteer pilots.

After Bellefonte, comes Geauga County Airport in Middlefield, OH, another small community airport, but also with delightful celebratory plans. ?From there, the next pilot(s) head for Bryan, OH and its Williams County Airport… and so on. ?By the end of Day One, the relay will overnight in Joliet, IL. ?Next morning, it’s off to Iowa City, and Omaha, and North Platte, and….a forecast freak early September snow storm over the Rockies. It could be our first schedule disruption. The last thing we want is for any of our pilots to run into icing conditions. ?We’re working on a couple contingency plans, including driving the mail from North Platte or Ogallala, NE to Cheyenne, WY so it’ll be there for the Thursday morning departure.?

In a strange way, it would be almost historically appropriate to have one leg of the relay be by surface transport. This often is how the Post Office got the mail through when a plane was forced down: the pilot put it on the first train headed in the right direction. That was also the advantage of?following railroads at the time.

Hopefully the weather will improve by Thursday and Kent, Craig, Larry, Bruce and Mike will have VFR all the way to Carson City, NV. ?

Day four is really starting to shape up to be exciting. ?John?Sawatzky and Stephen Tucker, our key event?‘wrangler’ in the Bay Area will be picking up the mail in Carson City in his Cessna 182 Skylane (N91591). Crossing the Sierras over Lake Tahoe, they will be met at Sacramento’s Mather Airport by possibly several pilots, the lead mail plane - Cessna P210 (N210SL) - ?flown by Steve Isaacs. Due to possible marine fog and the need to reset the arrival schedule back 45 minutes, the mail will be arriving at Buchanan Airport (CCR) about 10:30AM local time. ?The planes will park in front of Pacific States Aviation?facility in Concord, CA and at 10:45 the BeechBoys formation flying group will do a?“missing man” formation flyover to honor the memory of the 34 US Post Office air mail pilots and mechanics who lost their lives between 1918 and 1926. ?PSA is offering food and beverages to the pilots and any dignitaries and media that attend. ?

Around 12:30-1:00 pm, the mailbags with the commemorative postcards the pilots collected along the route of the relay will be driven to Martinez Marina on the Sacramento River. ?There they will be loaded on Seaplane Adventure’s () DeHavilland DHC-8?‘Beaver’ float plane for the last few air miles to the shore of Marina Green just east of the Golden Gate Bridge and site of the original landing in 1920. ?There at 2:30 pm, we will?“officially” hand-over the mailbags to San Francisco’s postmaster ?or his representative. From there, the postcards will be driven to the main San Francisco Post Office to be postmarked with the commemorative stamp the USPS had made for the occasion. ?

NOTICE: ?Due to Covid-19 restrictions we cannot invite the public to the Marina Green event. It is restricted to Post Office and AirMail100 delegates and any media who care to attend.

So, keep your fingers crossed! ?We have hopes the San Francisco Fire Department fire-fighting tugs will let go with their water canons, and the US Coast Guard will give us some blasts on their ship’s horn.

If?you can. Join Us. Make History.

Hi Ron?

? ? ? ? ?The acft. arriving to concord at 10:30 is a Cessna 210 it is White Burgundy and Tan. Tail # N210SL. The Pilot Steve Isaacs. At 10:45 will be the 1st Missing Man Formation Flight and the Fire truck shooting off the Nozzels and Police and Fire Dept. Running their sirens making as much noise as they can and the watter Nozzels like fireworks in the sky. John Sawatzky and Doug Fitzgerald and I will eigther go up the night before or leave early to be on the 14th leg from Carson City to Mather Field Sacramento in Johns Cessna 182, We will get the Mail in Carson City and leave about 7am we will hand off the mail to Steve Isaacs at Mather to fly to Concord and I will fly chase or in the plane with Steve? The both Missing Man Formation Flights are to Honor John Davi and the Men who sacrificed themselves delivering the Mail in those early years. We have been OKed to have Concord Police and Fire Dept. and the County Fire with the water nozzels. Plan A, about 1pm I will take the mail to Martinez Harbor with favorable conditions and with the help of the Harbor Master climb aboard the DH 8, (the Original Plane was a DH 4)? Beaver Float Plane and fly near to the Marina Green Field Marina and land and either get picked up by a boat or taxi up to shore and walk up to the Marina Green Field or Plan B, at 12pm I will follow by vehicle the Bay Valley and San Francisco Post Masters to Marina Green Field to hand off the mail at 2:30pm as was done in 1920. At 2:30pm there will be the Missing Man Flight Formation again Honoring John Davi and the Pilots who gave their lives flying the mail. Hopefully the Fire Boats will be spraying their nozzels like fireworks in the sky and SF PD Boats also making Noise moving around and also the Coast Guard shooting their weapons and of course (blanks)all this at the moment of hand off all captured by Photo's and Video. And that's a wrap. Thanks

To All,

I hope this email finds you in good health and spirits. On Friday September 11th, at 10:30, the Centennial Airmail flight will stop at Pacific States Aviation to transfer mail to the final aircraft which then deliver the mail to San Francisco. The mail on this flight will originate in New York.
Before the mail continues on it’s way to San Francisco, there will be a flyover by the Norcal Beechboy’s at 10:45 to honor all the pilots who risked their lives in establishing the airmail routes 100 years ago. The formation flight will then land at KCCR and taxi to PSA to brief for a second flight over the Marina in San Francisco which is the final destination for the Centennial flight.
While this is not an EAA 393 sanctioned event, all members are invited to attend the event at PSA FBO. Please observe social distancing guidelines and wear a mask if you are unable to maintain 6’ distance when outdoors. If indoors, please wear your mask at all times.
I want to express my appreciation to Bob Thompson of PSA without whom this event would not have happened. Bob has put in a lot of time and effort in facilitating this event.
This is your chance to meet up with friends who you may not have seen since the pandemic began. I look forward to seeing all of you there!
