BF-888S frequencies
This is a digression from Nigel's question about suitable HTs for use by non-hams in South Africa. So, here's a new thread. As I understand it, it was probably illegal for anyone to sell me my BF-888Ss. However, I don't think it was not illegal for me to buy them. It would have been illegal for me to transmit with them on any of the frequencies that were programmed into them when they arrived. I plan to use them as receivers for hidden transmitter hunts. They now have ham frequencies programmed with the TX function disabled. The original programming was: Cheers, Halden VE7UTS

Greetings from sunny South Africa 4
Hi Baofeng group members :-) Just joined this group and a (suspect automated) 'welcome' note from Donald is the prompt for this note. Understand attaining 'critical mass' is important and although hoped for information is not available via this group, I will 'stick around' as who knows... Currently I do not own a Baofeng radio of any type and interest in the brand is as a result of researching what appears to be rebranded / white label version of the BF888S by a local company (Zartek). My wife and I participate in local parkrun (both as volunteers and going the 5Km) and a pair of Zartek TX8's are used for 'road management' by marshal¡¯s. The owner of the Zartek's will be unavailable for a few weeks so idea is to obtain a pair of low cost units that operate in the licence free band. After some digging, the BF888S looks as if would be a viable option and aim of joining this group was to try and learn more about Baofeng and specifically the BF888S. A key point of the Zartek units is that also used by Gauteng Hamnet (Amateur radio disaster / emergency communications) in the 'go kits' programmed with several 'licence free' channels as well as local repeater and simplex frequencies. I use Alinco and TYT hand helds but am not willing to let parkrun marshal¡¯s use (with licence free channels programmed) as neither are 'low cost' (the Alinco is dual band and dual mode - FM and DMR), hence the search for affordable radios. IF the Zartek TX8 is indeed a rebranded BF888S (apart from cosmetics / branding, the only real difference seems to be the aerial: Stubby fixed on TX8 and SMA on Baofeng), then it is a no brainer to purchase (Baofeng about quarter to a tenth of the Zartek price!). The SMA aerial in fact is a bonus as by using a better aerial, we may be able to improve coverage and issue radio's to more marshals. Anyway, that my story and fingers crossed that going forward this group will grow and provide a valuable resource (if not already) for owners of Baofeng radios. 73 Nigel ZS6RN ex G8DEV l-o-n-g time ago!

The Tassie Devil Radio Case ? January 2025 Edition

The Tassie Devil Radio Case ? January 2025 Edition 3
Paul . . . <tanger32au@...> wrote: For me, it depends on what I'm "toting" somewhere. If it's just an HT, I toss it on the passenger seat or in the console between the car seats. If it's my IC-705, I have it in a plastic tote (probably about 1.5 cu. ft.) with the AH-705 tuner, Samlex 12V supply, some wiring, etc. The laptop goes in my laptop bag with the necessary cables to hook up to the 705 (or other radio). My other radios I usually leave at home but if I take my 7610 or 7300 to the clubhouse, I carry the 7300 in a similar tote as I mentioned above, and the 7610 I just carry carefully and set it on the back seat. I guess I don't do anything special. For home, I just leave things on the radio desk. Greetings from sunny South Africa - a question: 3
Hello again and thank you Donald for providing insightful links - appreciated. By chance whilst reading an article relating to fox hunting, I became aware of the importance of 'duty cycles' when using low cost I.e. Baofeng commercial (and to a degree home brewed but then there is ability to include adequate margins) equipment. Seems Baofeng have a VERY low rating - see attached. Your thoughts, comments? 73 Nigel

Factory reset DM 1701 2
Any way to do this? Uploading a blank code plug is not a hard/factory reset. I want a radio exactly as it was when taken from the box. Cheers, Nick.

Charging from 12V 12
I've got several Baofeng chargers that have a 10V wall wart and say 10v input voltage. Do these have a problem supplied with 12V? I want to put one in my truck and one in my RV and run them from 12V. I have found an adapter cord that plugs into the cigarette lighter and drops to 10V for the charger, but I'd rather just hook it up to PowerPoles and use the 12V distribution block. I don't want to blow anything up or start a fire. tnx es 73, Michael WA7SKG

Chirp and the NA-6K? 3
Anybody have any success using Chirp with the new Baofeng NA-6K? I was just gifted one. Nice looking little radio but I learned long ago that if you cant program it with Chirp, I dont want it. I did download the Baofeng software. It does work. But it's horrible! You must input every cell's information manually. No copy/paste capability, no importing of data. Imagine programming 999 channels one at a time! No thanks. I have a number of the UV-5 variants and I'm happy with them. This new NA-6k may just be re-gifted! KB0SFP

Baofeng UV-5R and APRSdroid Settings 2
Just started dabbling in APRS. Have the UV-5R, the APRS-K2 cable that hooks up to my LG smartphone, downloaded and installed the APRSdroid software, obtained the APRS-IS passcode and put that into the program. Finally seems that I have everything working. The volume on the radio is set to about 50% and looks like it decodes well. VOX is set at 8. I'm fuzzy on the APRSdroid settings; not real clear what needs to be set to what. I'm wanting to use this in my vehicle next weekend. Will set at high power, running into a 5/8 wave mag mount. Any thoughts/recommendations are appreciated! David AD4TJ VA FM08me

Baofeng UV5RA and Accessories for sale
I have for sale a Baofeng UV-5RA, which is the famous 2m/70cm 4 watt HTs with FM broadcast band receive. It works and looks well and comes with a drop in charger, thin whip aftermarket dualband antenna, Baofeng speaker mic, and a telescoping high gain antenna. The telescoping high gain antenna really gives you gain on 2m. It is 8.5 inches collapsed, 49 inches extended. It has a spring loaded base like the Smiley antennas to keep it from putting too much strain on the connector. I tried it on UHF and it seems to bring up some repeaters there but not others. I am sure you can partially retract some of the sections to get better UHF performance. It also seems to work on 2m and and somewhat on 70cm when fully retracted also. I also have a Nagoya type dualband antenna which seems to work on 2m but not UHF. I will include it as well. I am asking $35 shipped for all. I can take paypal/check/MO. 73 John AF5CC

Baofeng HT package for sale
I am helping to sell off an estate for an SK and from that I have a Baofeng HT package he owned. All HTs are in pretty good condition overall, except the GT-3 is missing the rubber cover over the speaker mic jack. All 4 have belt clips attached to them. Here is what is available: Baofeng UV-5RA and GT-3. These are the famous 2m/70cm 5 watt HTs with FM broadcast band receive. Both work well and come with a drop in charger and dualband antenna. I also have a Baofeng speaker mic I will include which works on 3 of the HTs. It doesn't work with the GT-3 for some reason. The UV-RA is missing the original antenna but I will include either a Sainsonic thin whip antenna, or a Hypario HFA-701 slightly thicker but still flexible whip antenna (this is really a Nagonya 701 antenna). Pick out which one you want. Also Baofeng GT-1 and BF-888s 70cm HTs. Smaller than the dualband, both work on 70cm with programmable channels. I don't have the programming cable for these so don't know what channels are included. Both have drop in chargers but you have to make sure the BF-888s is situated just so in the charger to get it to work. The batteries seem pretty good on the dualband HTs, not sure on the 70cm ones but they do charge up. Can't guarantee how long the batteries will last on any of these. Asking $60 shipped for the whole package, and I can take paypal/check/MO. 73 John AF5CC

FS: 2 meter high gain telescoping antennas (Baofeng connector)
I have for sale three 2 meter extended whip high gain telescoping antenna. Really gives you gain on 2m. 8.5 inches collapsed, 49 inches extended. They have a spring loaded base like the Smiley antennas to keep it from putting too much strain on the connector. They have SMA female connectors so they work with the Baofeng and other Chinese (plus Yaesu FT65 and FT4) HTs. I tried it on UHF and it seems to bring up repeaters there also. Once has a lable saying High Gain Antennas VHF: 136-174 mhz. The other 2 look identical but don't have the labels on them. Asking $21 shipped for each one. I can take paypal/check/MO. 73 John AF5CC

DM-1701 pc driver problems 7
Hi, I have tried every possible way to install the drivers downloaded first from the official Baofeng page and then from radioddity.com but without success. I have tried all the usb ports but it is not recognized. Radio arrived with its programming usb cable. The PC has no problem with the ports, the problem is the drivers. In the drivers package there are 3 executable files that do not work because it seems not compatible with Windows 10, I tried to run them also in XP or WIN7 compatibility mode but without success. I don't know what to do anymore, the radio so obviously unusable. Thanks !

UV-25 manual programming 3
We all know the manuals for Baofeng are difficult to understand. I have yet to be able to download the .img file from the radio using Chirp on linux. So, I thought I would manually program a channel for the local repeater. Yeah, right. Trying to make sense of the manual is pretty frustrating. There are a number of sites for the UV-5R, but I don't know if the menus are the same for both models. Can anyone shed some light on this? I would be grateful. 73, KK7MSN

Baofeng M-5R 7
I just bought a Baofeng M-5R. I didn't need another HT, but this one features the aviation band as well as FM radio, 2m, and 70 cm. It came with an owner's manual titled "UV-5RX Series." I already have a few other Baofengs, so I got this one up and running without delay and the aviation band receiver (AM) seems to work well. One error in the manual (or maybe just a difference between models) is that changing the FM Radio band from 65-75 MHz to 76-108 MHz is stated to be accomplished using the A/B key. But the change is actually made using the BAND key. 73, Maynard W6PAP
