BF888 vs BF88
5
I¡¯ve noticed some advertisers on EBay etc mentioned BF888(s) in the title but the detail description mentions the BF88(E). Is this just a manifestation of Baofeng¡¯s habit not being exactly consistent with model numbers? (I looking to buy a couple of 888 radios to modify for Allstar nodes. Details for modifying the 888 are available. While I could probably figure out details for a variant, I¡¯d rather not go down that route unless I need to. ) 73 Brian

What function does the name field have . . .
2
I added city names in the column next to the repeater frequency in CHIRP and uploaded the revised list to my Baofeng HT. The city name of one showed but didn't change as I changed memory channels. Is there some option on the Baofeng display that I need to choose so that only 1 memory channel shows at a time with the city (or whatever you name it) below that? There isn't room for both on one line. I ended up just uploading my old list without the names and I'll have to remember where the repeaters are by frequency for now, at least. Donald -- AD8DY

Baofeng radios able to transmit out of band
5
I've read several articles and a YouTube video about Baofeng HT's that were made before the US forced them to lock the transmit range to stay within the amateur bands. Many of us have older ones which can transmit well outside our bands. Anyone know the latest on this? If I understand correctly, we can use them inside the amateur bands just like our home built equipment which COULD be used to transmit out of band signals. I know their BF-888 "license-free" radios once were able to transmit on the amateur bands as well as GMRS and FRS frequencies at I think 5 watts. New ham groups, also new pricing structure for groups
The next message is about some new groups I created to have a general-purpose discussion group for some brands of amateur radio equipment and radios before groups.io's new pricing structure goes into effect Jan 81, 2021. It is a long message, so I just wanted to give you a heads-up. I cross-posted it to all the groups I manage. I will be looking for moderators for the new groups and even some of the established groups, so if you're interested in helping, please email me privately about this. For the rest, please read my next post. It's a long and detailed one. New ham groups added, new groups.io pricing structure on Jan 18, 2021 (long post, intentionally cross-posted)
First, the new pricing structure for NEWLY formed groups on groups.io beginning January 18, 2021. Basic (free) groups formed on or after that date stay free *up to 100 members*. After that, it will need to be upgraded to a premium group. Premium groups ($220/year) are good up to 400 members, after which a per-member fee ($.05 per month or $0.55 per year) is added to the $220 per year premium group fee. That will bring a burden on some new groups, so I created some more ham groups that may grow, or flounder, but I wanted to beat the deadline so those groups will not be charged extra fees, or any fees, for that matter. If they take off and are useful, that will be great. If they flounder, I might just delete the group if members agree, or if there are no co-owners by the time I review whether the group is worth keeping. If you were thinking of creating a group for one of your interests, THIS IS THE TIME TO DO SO before the new pricing structure goes into effect. If you need help with that, email me *privately* and if I'm not overwhelmed with requests, I will try to help. You must be willing to assume group ownership as I will leave the group after creating it and you've been made a group owner. If you need help getting started with the group, I can hang around for a short while and direct you to documentation on how to run a group. As for the new groups I created last evening, I will list their web addresses below. Please contact me *privately* ONLY IF you are interested in joining one of these groups AND ARE UNABLE to use the join button on the web site or find the join process confusing. I would like to avoid what happened when Yahoo closed their groups and I offered to help people if they were unable to join themselves. I was overwhelmed with requests to help, and I'm sure not all of those were from people who had difficulty joining, so please give it a try yourself first. Go to the site and press the join button on the group(s) you are interested in. Follow the simple instructions and you will be approved. All new members will be moderated for a short time so don't expect to post immediately. There's only one moderator right now (me), and I work for a living, sleep at night, and take naps because of my health condition in late afternoons sometimes. I donate some of my time for community work, am a minister, and have to wisely use my time. But I don't want anyone to not join one of these groups because they find it difficult to join. YOU CAN JOIN ANY OF THESE GROUPS BY EMAIL by sending a message to the subscribe address. Take the web address name at the end of the URL and change it by adding [email protected] to it. For the FT-757 group (as an example): /g/FT-757GX Send an email to this address: [email protected] no body text is required in the message, just the address, but to make your email program happy, you can put the word subscribe in the subject and message fields. These new lists are email reflectors only with no storage (a change that was made almost a year ago by GIO's owner). If I had created them before February 2020, they would have storage. We will work something out for storage if the groups get large enough and have a need for that. I will need moderators for these new groups, and soon after they get on their feet, a co-owner who has some real interest and hopefully experience with these different brands of radios. Contact me off-list if you are interested in volunteering with any of these groups. I will help you out with anything you need to know about how to manage a group as a moderator or co-owner. I will list the NEW groups first, then list the other amateur radio groups I created. Note that most of these are not model-specific and are "general-purpose" groups for a BRAND of radio or a general-purpose group for a type of equipment. I did not create any group for which there already was a general-purpose discussion group for that brand of radio, like Drake and some others. I am not interested in amassing a lot of groups to manage. My purpose is just to see that interes

UV-5R (& BF-F9 V2+)
3
In between life, I've been trying to study the UV-5R. (This old vet finds it in his budget.) So, thanks for the chatter ! Such a myriad though. I go to spend 20 or 50 and really have trouble sifting... not normally a problem I have. The Baofeng BF-F9 V2+ with part 90 cert, is also of some interest for its potential eventual safety public band monitor use. BillSF9c

Communication between UV-9R and computer for programming
3
As stated above, I have a UV-9R. I am attempting to ttransfer he frequency list from the computer to the radio using the furnished cable that came with the radio. I have matched the radio with the comp port on the computer. When the info appears to complete I get an error message saying "Radio not found". Any ideas? Burt AF5AA

Baofeng DM-1701 DMR radio -- do you have one?
5
Does anyone here have the Baofeng DM-1701 and has used the DMR features on it? I would like to compare it with the very popular Anytone DMR radios. It's less expensive but is it as good, and is it easy to set up, program, and use? UV-82 Malware
9
I am using a Dell laptop with WIN XP. I bought a programming cable from a dealer at the hamfest in Seveireville, TN. It was labeled "Baofeng" on a black plastic insert in a metal clip on the top of the USB plug. The small CD accompanying it was broken. I tried to use Chirp, and already installed drivers, but they did not work. I downloaded the Driver, and software that the Miklor site reccommends. I tried to use it, but I just kept getting error messages. I then tried a programming cable that I got from R&L several years ago to program a Wouxun KG-UVD1P. It worked the first time. Obviously, the problem was tha cable,I acquired in TN, not the Miklor drivers. I think the cable is a counterfeit, that is not FTDI compliant. I dont't know for sure, nothing I did would identify it. Anyway, somewhere in all of this some malware got into the system. When the battery is getting low, the UV 82 every 28 seconds says "mobile tits", blanking out any audio signal the radio is receiving. I can stop this by turning of the voice, but I really would like to have the voice prompts active. Any body have any ideas on how to fix this? Dan AI8O

New DM-1702 problems
3
I recently purchased a Baofeng DM-1702 DMR which includes GPS and APRS. I cannot get it to connect to the PC software, Win10 Pro 64-bit, CPS DM-1702 V1.00.79. I have a DM-1701, purchased earlier, and it seems to be working fine with it's software, CPS DM-1701 V1.05 My problem is, the radio (1702) seems to connect. I hear the Windows connect tone and I see in device manager "no printer attached", which is strange, as one would think it would come up as a COM port or USB device. Tried both cables: Micro USB port and K to USB that came with the radio (the one that connects to the speaker/mic ports). I have tried to update this driver but it says the one installed is the best. The software will not connect to download the radio data. Gives and error message and resets the radio. It looks like I can program channels manually, as it has the RX Frequency, TX Frequency, and CTCSS tone settings in the Settings menu when the radio is set to channel mode. (I did this with the 1701 with success). When set to VFO mode, I do not see these settings. Right now, channel mode is A, VFO mode is B, and I cannot see how to change these from the radio menu. Also, in "Radio Info - Versions" it shows Firmware: 1.05.01.005 and CPS . (just a dot). Another thing, the volume control seems glitchy. It starts out rather quiet at 1 and by 3 it is blasting. I've done a search to see if I can find anything on this radio but it seems it is too new to have anything available. Any suggestions? Or would you say this radio is defective somehow? Should I return it and get another, or just get my money back? I bought it through AliExpress. I have purchased other items with them with only one other problem and they solved it right away. Thanks for any help. *** Walt *** WA7SDY ***

How to connect to n-type coax
3
I've ordered a vertical 2m/70cm antenna for mounting outside and wish to connect to my UV-5R. I need a shortish lead that adapts for connection to an N-type coax cable - apparently these are called "pigtails". So, if I understand correctly I need a N-type female to SMA female pigtail/lead adapter. Can I find one - just spent two hours searching! Help you techies, please! I don't want to solder anything - I want it ready made (and reliable quality). I'm located in the UK.

Baofeng rapid battery charger
4
I've been a ham since 1973. The last handheld radio I bought was a Yaesu FT-530 25 years ago. I think I paid nearly $500.00 USD! I finally pulled the trigger on a Baofeng UV-5R basic model (18.00 USD after discounts!) and a BF-F8HP 8 watt full kit with extra battery, cables, etc. for around 45.00 USD. These are great little radios for the price. The battery chargers supplied are pretty nice, applying the correct charging algorithm (500mA constant current followed by constant voltage, terminating at 4.1 volts/cell = 8.2 volts). Although the full kit came with an automotive power adapter, there was no regulator inside. It applies 12 volts to the charger base, rather than the recommended 10 volts. Some charge controller chips can handle this, but there have been reports of certain charger bases frying if 12 volts are applied. Much depends upon how much current the chip inside is programmed to deliver (set with a resistor) and the exact type of chip used. Using the charging cradle is pretty inconvenient for vehicle use, as is the 5 hour recharge time of the cradle circuit. I wanted a charge setup capable of faster charging in a car without worry about the battery bouncing out of the cradle. I came up with the following setup. I fly electric-powered model RC airplanes. These use lithium-polymer batteries in various cell configurations. The market has many inexpensive chargers that work from 12 volts and allow the charge current and cell count to be adjusted to suit the battery back. I constructed a charging adapter out of small piece of prototyping circuit board. I made two charging contacts out of small wire loops soldered to the board. I also soldered on a charger connector pigtail that mates with the connector on the output of the charger. I finally used hot melt glue to attach a loop of 3/4" elastic to the board. The adapter slips over the battery securely, while the elastic holds the wire loops against the + and - charging contacts of the battery. A longer piece of elastic would allow charging with the battery on the radio. The center contact on the battery (a temperature sensor contact) is not used by Baofeng in either the charger or internally within the battery. Finally, I plugged the automotive power adapter into the charger power input jack. It fit perfectly. To use, I use I connect to the vehicle power port and use a button on the side to select a 2-cell battery pack. I then use a second button to select the charge current. I have used a 2 amp (2000mA) "1C" charge rate without ill effect. The charger will bring a completely dead battery to full charge in under an hour with this setting. You should not set the charging current any higher than the rating of the pack or overheating and damage may occur!!! LEDs on the charger show when in constant current or constant voltage mode. It beeps if connected to the battery in reverse, if good connection is lost and when charging is complete. Although the charger is designed for lithium polymer batteries, the charging algorithm for lithium ion chemistry is identical. It works very well for this application. Although this particular unit is discontinued, they may be found on Fleabay. There are many other similar inexpensive chargers for lithium polymer cells used by RC hobbyists that may be used the same way. Hopeful this spurs some creative adaptations of the basic idea. It makes a very robust portable power solution, especially with extra batteries. WD9DMP

Baofeng CH1801 charger for DM-1801 DMR radio
2
I have a charger from day one while charging has never switched from the charge mode (RED LED) to the COMPLETED CHARGE (GREEN LED) It appears to charge the battery. After a few hours I have a battery charged to around 8.3 volts. The charger uses a HXN-WS chip. The other number on the chip looks like e4969 or e4959. i still could be wrong. So far all the electrical connections seem to be good based on using an ohm meter going point to point. Anyone else come across this problem? I have a friend who purchased a DM-1801 with CH1801 charger and his works perfectly. His circuit board and mine look identical except his chip looks like it could be a HXN-WS e4975. Searching everywhere I could not find this IC but did find plenty of HXN-WS with different eXXXX numbers. Schematic looks identical to what 's called a SC6038 except on mine pins 7 (CS), pin 1 (VIN) and pin 6 (EN) are all tied together. The SC6038 circuit shows a R6 10K resistor in series with pin 6. Pin 6 (EN) needs a high to turn on the chip so I don't think its an issue with a direct short to VIN. It appears to charge so it must be turned on. With no battery but charger powered up it's my understanding it's suppose to flash RED/GREEN with the LED. Mine only flashes RED. At this point I am thinking a defective IC since it appears to never switch from CHARGE to COMPLETE. Interested in hearing any comments. I was thinking of just scrapping the circuit board and go with a TP5100 board. Ken

programming a uv5r pro with chirp
14
I just received two UV5R Pro HT's that I purchased as a package deal and I am now trying to program them and set them up for use but I have run into some real issues. Every time I try to load a set of 19 channels (both duplex and simplex with most of the duplex being tone access) I am unable to upload that into the radio using chirp. I do not know if I am doing something wrong or if I am using the wrong version of Chirp, or maybe if there is something that I am missing. I have also tried to program the radio by hand and I am having absolutely no success with that. What steps are involved in setting up a set of channels or frequencies in Chirp and uploading those into the Baofeng UV5R Pro?

Baofeng BF-T1 Prog cable
2
Hello Group, I recently purchased a BF-T1 with cable and most places said that the driver was a prolific PL-2303, which was not the case. I tried this lead in 3 different PC's off different OpSys but none of them would recognise it and tried different versions of prolific drivers but to no avail. I decided to go to the Miklor to see what he had to say and said that some Baofeng prog cables use the WCH (CH340/341) chipsets. So I decided to give it a go and bingo.... it worked !!!! Also you have to plug in the prog lead BEFORE you instal the driver, which you never normally do either. I have used a lot of prog leads and never heard of this chipset. Moral to the story is that there may be more than one chipset used in a particular lead due to chip supply and different manufactures of that prog lead. I highly recommend the Miklor web page as a good source of radio info & tips, link below to the cable drivers page https://miklor.com/COM/UV_Drivers.php Cables & Drivers - Prolific & FTDI - Miklor USB Cable Drivers FTDI / Prolific / SiLabs / WCH Microsoft (tm) Drivers May 2013, 2015, 2019 Rev 7/2020 John K3NXU Jim KC9HI miklor.com Regards, Doug VK2XLJ
