BF-F8+ random startup channel 10
My BF-F8+ starts up on random channels. It usually starts on channel 0 even though it is almost always on channel 1 when I turn it off. I'd like it to start on 1. Anyone have any idea how to fix this?

DM-V1, DMR HT 5
Would anyone have any experience with this HT using it on DMR Repeaters? A friend picked one up and was asking me if could be programmed to work on DMR Repeaters. I can't find much on this HT. I could use a sample Codeplug configured for any Repeater. That would tell me what I need to know to help program the local Repeaters . Thanks, Ken

Baofeung Antenna Tools
Permission to repost from Jim of: /g/nanovna-users/messages Many of you will be all over this; while I am not. The VNAs have a great group. It's a $30-60 Smith Chart type test-evaluation tool. From Jim to me, Then his post about a VNA & an antenna he got for his Baofeung... and, returned. BillSF9c "Feel free to re-post it to the group. Not geeking out on Baofengs at the moment. Maybe I will join at another time. Someday I may try to tame the 2m harmonics on my fake UVS9. I actually don't do very much VHF/UHF FM..." 73 -Jim NU0C : NanoVNA-H v3.6 vs NanoVNA-H4 v4.3 for SWR measurements Jim Shorney11:25am I've done that on the theory that the NVNA approximated the size and ground plane of a Baofeng HT. I was able to determine that the cheap tri-band whip sold by one of the recent names in the business is really only a dual band. the vendor has no clue what in the world I was talking about when I asked for test data. They couldn't put me in touch with anyone that wasn't reading talking points off a screen. I got a refund. Thanks, NanoVNA! 73 -Jim

Legal Baofeng (in case you were interested) 3
A version of the UV-5R called the GT-5R has come out on Amazon that apparently is made with a bit more QC. Identical looks. It is touted that it is "legal" and won't bleed into the rest of the RF environment. Costs about $30.

Baeofeng on APRS
KK4IXE, I have been using voice for over a decade. Recently found an interest in using APRS and hope to use it over my Baeofeng coupled to my iPhone. I intend to receive weather and emergency updates and communicate over SMS to my wife while doing fieldwork in wooded areas. Can anyone offer guidance here? Respectfully Terry

I need a UV82 that won't transmit 8
I need a UV82 that won't transmit. My 3 year old grandson likes to play with my UV-82. He has already learned to kerchunk a local repeater, make the flashlight blink, and turn on FM broadcasts I am looking for one where the flashlight, and the FM broadcast function works, but it wont transmit. Baofeng AR-152 radio today only 79.95 at R&L Electronics
Baofeng advertises this as a 15W radio. It isn't. R&L tested it at about 8W. Apparently, in China, you add up the wattage for each band and total it. Anyway, this is a good price for an 8W radio. https://store2.rlham.com/shop/catalog/product_info.php?products_id=75711 ---------------------------------------------------- Some ham radio groups you may be interested in: /g/ICOM /g/Ham-Antennas /g/HamRadioHelp /g/Baofeng /g/CHIRP https://rf-amplifiers.groups.io/g/main

UV82 receiver cycling
Jack . . . You may need to refer to the manual for this, but some radios have a weather channel monitor for NOAA weather radio stations. In my Icom 5100, for example, many people set their local WX channel up and set it to monitor the frequency for WX alerts. This stops audio while it checks for an alert, then returns to the frequency you've been listening to. This might be the case here, but I don't have the radio. See if there's a monitor function that needs to be set to off. I don't see a WX monitor function, but look at page 17 in the manual: https://ia801509.us.archive.org/31/items/baofeng_UV82_Manual/UV82_Manual.pdf look under TDR (dual watch/dual reception) It allows the radio to periodically check to see if it's receiving a signal on another frequency. Make sure that's off. Menu items are described on pages 14 and 15. If that doesn't help, perhaps someone who has the same radio can help. UV-5RT Screen Fault
Here's an interesting one, Suddenly around January this year the screen on my 5RT stopped having anything on the display (well if you get the angle and lighting just right you can just about make something out). It was working fine the day before and I discovered it upon lifting it out of the charger and turning it on. Thinking perhaps its just got too cold as it was in an out building with no heating that it was just a screen fault, so I purchased a new one and fitted it, but alas it was no better. I then did a factory reset before taking it apart again and this time cleaned the contacts on the board, the new screen and zebra strips with some isopropanol. Still no better, however I noticed if you press lightly on the screen the display momentarily works. I put the radio to one side and only had another look at it the other day, I cleaned the board again, tried another screen then scratched my head as it's still no good. So I thought I might as well ask on here if anyone has any ideas as all I can think of now is its either a component failure, a hidden setting or to try reflowing the board. Yes I know they are cheap and some consider throw away, but it would be nice to fix it.

UV-S9 on 220 9
It programs fine and works as it should on 2M & 440, but even though the offset is showing in CHIRP, and the display shows the +-, the radio doesn't shift transmit to the offset on 220. Has anyone else run into this problem with the UV-S9? Solutions?

UV-5R instruction manual 9
I bought a UV-5R because the price was so low and it works fine, essentially the same as my UV-S9PLUS. The manual received with the UV-5R includes more detail than do the manuals received with my other Baofengs and it includes two methods for adding offset to channel memories. The one that I've been using for years with Baofengs and others is described in "6.11 Repeaters Programming" in which one enters the repeater frequency, the offset frequency, the offset direction (+ or -) and, if required, the CTCSS frequency. That works fine with any of my three Baofengs. The manual describes, in "6.10 Manual Programming," a different method in which the repeater frequency is stored first, followed by an audio announcement "received frequency" and then the frequency to be used to transmit to the repeater is entered and stored in the same memory location. That procedure is followed by an announcement "transmit frequency." This procedure can be carried out with either my UV-5R or my UV-S9PLUS, but with both Baofengs, the offset that results is actually twice the desired offset, at least on two meters which is the only band I've tried. If I enter, for example, a repeater on 145.430 MHz and it requires a negative offset, I enter the second frequency as 144.830 MHz. But when I access the stored memory channel and key the transmitter, the frequency transmitted is actually 144.230 MHz. I don't really need this procedure, but I'm wondering whether I'm getting it wrong or whether anyone else has run into this. 73, Maynard W6PAP

Chargers
Hello, I'm a new member of this group; with five Baofengs, and if I'm allowed to mention it, a Wouxun KG-UV9D plus, all of which I've gathered over the last 6 or 7 years or so. Because of increasing deafness, (me, not the radio's!), they've never had much usage, as I took the decision about twenty years ago, to change over to digi stuff, almost exclusively PSK. PSK is getting rare nowadays, and so FT8 was the next thing, but the Baofengs keep winking at me, and I know that they want to go out for exercise, in the company of an Arrow 2/70 beam, so I'm going to go try APRS through satellites, and possibly set up one HT at home, to keep me amused, and for anyone else to access of course. Baofeng UV82 programming cable 7
How do I determine what cables will actually work programming Baofeng HTs? I had one that came with it when I bought a UV82. This cable also worked with Wouxin KG1-UVD. Lost that cable, and now I have purchased two replacement PSC 03 cables from different companies. Neither works. The mini CD from Baofeng that came with one of the cables; says use program # 348. <There is no program # 348 on the disk> When I try to use the cables on a laptop using WInXP and Chirp; I get error messages: "ERROR 2 radio not found". "COM 5 not available". IDK how to identify a cable that will indeed work with this radio. Possbly, I have a cable that is not FTDI compliant, but I don't know how to check this. Dan AI8O

Charlie . . . <w5cdt@...> wrote: I was under the impression that the company got in trouble with the FCC (they did), and they had to make changes to them so they couldn't transmit out of band. Maybe that's only part of the story? I have one of the old ones. I also have some BF-888's that can be made to operate out of band. The packaging said they were license-free. I thought they were FRS radios. They were cheap, something like $30 for 2 with all the accessories. They can be put on the 440 ham band, also FRS, GMRS, and even other frequencies. I'm sure they're no longer allowed to sell them in the US, but they're a great way to have a radio for FRS that transmits way more power than an FRS radio is supposed to. UV9R Speaker Mic fault 4
I have a speaker mic connected to my UV9R. This is it: https://www.baofengradio.co.uk/original-baofeng-portable-speaker-mic-microphone-for-uv-9r-uv-9r-plus-a-58-9700-walkie-talkies/ It's been working fine for several months, but recently when I turn on the radio, it immediately starts transmitting and none of the buttons on the radio are responsive. If I disconnect the speaker mic, the radio operates normally so I am assuming that the issue is with the radio mic. Has anyone seen this before, or does anyone have tips on how to troubleshoot? I have raised a query with Baofeng customer support (In the UK) , does anyone know how good or otherwise they are? 73 Paraic EI9IRB

Battery Connector BL-5L?? 2
I notice what appears to be a charge connector at the top right corner of the subject battery. Here are some questions. #1, is this a charge port? I found no charger/wall wart listed anywhere dedicated to this battery. The wall-wart used with the standard drop in charger has a different connector. #2, is this a DC supply port? If so, for how many volts? Observations: I notice that if 12vdc is supplied to this port there is no current drain until the radio is turned on. The receiver operates and the battery charge indicator shows all three bars, but the radio will not transmit. Disconnect the 12vdc and the battery indicator drops to two bars and the radio will transmit. It would appear that this is a charge port. Odd that it is only active when the radio is turned on. What would be the safe charge voltage? 12vdc? Dennis Starks Military-Radio-Guy KB?SFP
