CHIRP does the job just fine once it's set up. RT Systems is just a little more
polished and supports more radios than CHIRP, I believe. RT systems (last time I
bought their package several years ago) charges about $25 for their cable and
$25 for the software when bought together. But, the good part is that if you buy
the package from them, it will work, and there's good support if you need it.

I've used both. I don't really see CHIRP as being difficult to use, but I won't
buy a cable with the Prolific chipset. I get one that uses the FDTI chip or
there's another one from China that also works well, though they don't supply
instructions for it. You have to find the driver on your own.
