Big announcement from Berkeley Old Time Music Convention

?

d7978859-1572-36e4-b10c-ce524b015b30.jpeg

Announcing a new partnership
between the BOTMC and Ashkenaz

Dear old time music folks,

The Berkeley Old Time Music Convention is very happy to announce that we have a new fiscal sponsor,!? Ashkenaz, a 501(c)3 nonprofit tax-exempt arts organization, ?is the wonderful dance hall where we¡¯ve always held our BOTMC dances, and they have been supporting all kinds of traditional and roots music here in the Bay Area since 1973.?

The?Freight & Salvage let us know earlier this year that beginning in 2025 they would no longer serve as fiscal sponsor for the BOTMC, a relationship that began 21 years ago with the festival's inception. We are sorry to see this long and fruitful partnership come to a close; we do still plan to present our annual concerts and weekday?workshops at the Freight through their rentals program. We are looking for a new location to host workshops on the Sunday of the festival. If you know of a space with three or four classrooms that would be suitable, please let us know!

We are also excited to announce that BOTMC is co-sponsoring a monthly old time jam at the Berkeley Public Library Central Branch, intended as a continuation of the Freight's monthly old time jam, which has been discontinued. This jam will begin in January 2025 and will be held every third Tuesday from 6:00-7:30 PM. The first one will be on Tues. Jan. 21st, from?6:00 to 7:30 PM.? Free admission of course.? Everybody is welcome!!

Big thanks to the staff and Board of Ashkenaz for welcoming us!? We look forward to many years of working together.

Mark your calendars for 2025 BOTMC:? Sept. 17-21, 2025.? Performers include Jake Blount and Jeff & Judy Hyman (of the Horseflies), with more to be added!

Happy holidays from Suzy & the rest of the BOTMC organizers

Your Rose Garden - Song release and world premiere at Amarcort Film Festival

?
The New Deal in Berkeley. Building the Rose Garden 33'-37'
Dear Friends,

Well, that's a wrap!? ? is the most ambitious film Director Josh Peterson and I have made to date and we are excited to send it out into the world.? Thanks to our amazing cast, crew, and supporters, our premiere is?today at the?,?held yearly in honor of Fellini in his hometown of Rimini, Italy.??

To coincide with the film's premiere, I am releasing the song today as well. It is up on all the streamers (, etc), but ?is where you can listen for free and download the song in high-resolution). Your kind support will help us send the film out into the world. We'll?keep you updated on local screening opportunities as they arise!?

Grazie mille a tutti voi!

Alexis

Some press on the film:?

Festival Synopsis:
In the darkest days of the Great Depression, forgotten Americans built a haven of sunlight and flowers in the hills of Berkeley, California. The workers who made the Berkeley Rose Garden were hired by President Roosevelt's WPA, which gave jobs to the unemployed and created public infrastructure that is cherished and relied upon to this day. Weaving imagery from the distant past to the living present, "Your Rose Garden" celebrates this still-thriving community space to the tune of Alexis Harte's joyful song.

Ashkenaz: 25 Days to Keep the Music Alive ¨C We Need You! ?

?
?

Dear Lisa,

The countdown is on: we have just 25 days left to reach our year-end goal of $50,000 to help sustain Ashkenaz as the vibrant hub for music, culture, and community you know and love!

Thanks to generous supporters like you on Giving Tuesday, we¡¯re off to a strong start¡ªbut we¡¯re not there yet.

Every donation gets us closer to our goal and helps ensure that Ashkenaz continues to thrive as a home for live music, dance, and cultural connection in the Bay Area.

Why now?

Well, Ashkenaz has been a cornerstone for live music, dance, and cultural exchange for over 50 years, and your support is essential to keeping that legacy alive. We couldn't do what we do each show without it! With your help, we can ensure that Ashkenaz continues to bring people together through the universal language of music.

The clock is ticking, but together we can reach this goal. Please consider making your contribution today and sharing this appeal with your friends and family. Let¡¯s keep the music alive for generations to come.

With heartfelt thanks,

Sarah Travis

Prescott Circus - Celebrating 40 Years of Joy and Belonging

Hard Work-Teamwork-Practice-Believe In Myself-Never Give Up

Creativity-Play-Collaboration-Ancestry-Empowerment-Artistry

November 2024

Dear Friends, Family, and Fans,

Earlier this week, I got a call from a former student who started back?in 2013-2014 at Prescott Elementary. They just returned to the Bay Area and wanted a new PCT t-shirt and know about upcoming shows. They shared:?

You may not have known or remembered what it was like for me back then, what it was like for me at home. Prescott Circus gave me a place to express myself and be myself. I still think about it. I even got on a unicycle the other day!

This conversation resonated with why we¡¯re celebrating 40 years. Since Miss Moffitt taught her first circus classes at Prescott Elementary in '84-'85, Prescott Circus continues to offer Oakland children safe spaces to experience joy, creativity, belonging, and connections - experiences that make a positive, life-long impact.

Click the image to see joy, creativity, and connection in action.

In honor of our 40th Anniversary, we're raising $40,000 before January 1 and, thanks to many of you already, we're just $16,500 short of our goal.?With the current budget challenges in our city and school district, your support is more crucial than ever. Celebrate our 40th with a year-end donation to ensure Prescott Circus continues to be a place where young people thrive.

Thank you for your continued support.

With Gratitude,

Help Us Keep the Music & Community Alive at Ashkenaz! ?

?
?

Dear Lisa,

This Giving Tuesday, we¡¯re turning to our incredible Ashkenaz community to help us reach an ambitious¡ªbut critical¡ªgoal: raising $50,000 by the end of the year to sustain the music, joy, and connection that define Ashkenaz.

For over 50 years, Ashkenaz has been a cornerstone for live music, dance, and cultural exchange in the Bay Area. We¡¯ve hosted artists from around the globe, supported local talent, and brought together a diverse community under one roof. None of this would be possible without your support.

This year, more than ever, we need your help. Here¡¯s what your generosity can achieve:

? Preserving Our Historic Venue: Your gift helps us maintain and improve our unique space, ensuring it remains a home for music and community.

? Supporting Artists: Funding live performances, workshops, and events ensures that talented artists can continue sharing their gifts with the world.

? Inspiring the Next Generation: Your donation supports our developing youth programs, including our new summer camp "Camp 'Kenaz", providing music and dance education to young people from all backgrounds.

Every dollar makes a difference. For example:

  • $25 - $50 helps us keep the lights on for a night of live music.
  • $100 supports a local musician to perform on our stage.
  • $300 sponsors a child¡¯s participation in our youth programs.
  • $500 or more helps underwrite an evening of diverse cultural programming and allows more money to go directly to our amazing artists!

Will you join us in keeping the spirit of Ashkenaz alive for generations to come?

Thank you for being part of the Ashkenaz family and for supporting our mission to unite people through music, culture, and dance. Together, we can make this Giving Tuesday one to remember.

With so much gratitude for your help and presence,

Sarah Travis

Executive Director

Ashkenaz Music & Dance Community Center

P.S. Your gift today will bring us one step closer to our $50,000 goal¡ªand ensure the music keeps playing into the new year!

Central Works: Thanks for all you do for us!

Dear friends and patrons,

We've just turned 34 and are on the cusp of our 35th season...a truly remarkable feat that we could never have achieved without your incredible resilience and

support.

We can't know what the next few years hold for Central Works, for the performing arts, or for the nation. For today, though, we just want to say thanks to every one of you for the roles you have played in our story. Thank you for making The New Play Theater thrive!

We're looking forward to seeing you in 2025!
