News from the City of Berkeley Live music concerts in Berkeley parks May 10 through September 13, experience a mix of rock, bluegrass, funk, kids’ music, and Latin rhythms at family-friendly concerts across Berkeley. Join us in Berkeley parks on seven Saturday afternoons this summer for live music concerts that cater to a variety of ages and tastes. Moms of all ages, those who want to celebrate them, or just jazz lovers, can head to the Berkeley Rose Garden on May 10 for a Mother’s Day celebration of live music, cold drinks, dessert, and flower giveaways. Toddlers can sing and dance along with an interactive performance with puppets. Kids up to age 12 might enjoy funk-rock from a costumed band with kid-friendly lyrics and themes. We also have concerts for those who revel in rock music, fans of funk, and supporters of soul. You can dance to Latin rhythms or, in our last concert on September 13, unwind with acoustic bluegrass by the Bay. We've spread the concerts across many Berkeley parks, from Shorebird Park on the waterfront to South Berkeley and up into the hills. At least one will be close to you. (You can still come to all). Some of our concerts will include food trucks. All will have live music performed amidst our community. For details, see our events calendar or the specific event links below. Saturday music series runs May 10 through September 13 Our Music in the Parks series offers local music, kids’ activities, and entertainment, with some events featuring food, games, or guest speakers. May 10, 2:00 pm–5:00 pm at Berkeley Rose Garden: Mother’s Day Hats and High Tea will feature music from the Berkeley High Jazz Society. We’ll also have cold drinks, cake, flower and dessert giveaways, and multiple photo booths. Activities for the kids include crafts and a bubble show. Seniors can get a free shuttle ride to and from the event. June 7, 2:00 pm–4:00 pm at King School Park: Tot Fest will feature Andy Z and the Happily Ever Laughter Fairies. Fruit popsicles from Bliss Pops will be available for purchase. June 28, 2:00 pm–4:00 pm at Ohlone Park Baseball Field: Rockin’ Fest will feature the cover band, Keep On Truckin’. Food trucks will be on site. July 12, 2:00 pm–4:00 pm at Grove Park: Funk Fest will feature the musicians Michael Jeffries, Nzuri Soul, Ric Alexander, Rhonda Benin, and Soul House Band. Food trucks or vendors will be on site. July 26, 2:00 pm–4:00 pm at San Pablo Park: Kids Fest will feature music from Purple Fox and the Heebie Jeebies. Brown Cap Soft Serve will be available for purchase. August 9, 2:00 pm–4:00 pm at Strawberry Creek Park: Salsa Fest will have music by La Gente SF. You’ll be able to buy food from Las Caba?as. September 13, 2:00 pm–4:00 pm at Shorebird Park: Bluegrass Fest will feature music from Gin and Boots. Beverages for purchase from Roaming Bean Coffee. Come early to pick out your spot. No alcohol or controlled substances are allowed. Bring your blankets or low back chairs to enjoy the music. When traveling around the city, consider public transit, shared mobility options, or carpooling with friends. Community concerts are just one of a variety of events organized by the City's Parks, Recreation, and Waterfront Department, which offers a variety of camps, classes, and activities catering to diverse age groups and socioeconomic backgrounds. Rising Seas 1 with Batey Tambó Rhythmix Rising Seas is a free outdoor performance series bringing music, dance, and theater to Alameda’s waterfront from May through August. Each event transforms a shoreline location into a vibrant stage for global traditions, immersive storytelling, and community connection. The first event features Batey Tambó, a women-of-color-led ensemble rooted in Afro-Indigenous Puerto Rican Bomba. Choreographer KT Nelson and dancers present a participatory piece inspired by local voices, while Jeff Raz’s “Climate Detective from the Future” returns with clues for a brighter tomorrow. May 31, 2025 Radical Research Panel deliberating & liberating dance practices Luna invests in dance research as a way to advance our field and investigate what dance research can be, who shares it, who has access to it, and how it can be presented. Radical Research highlights the legitimate and rigorous inquiry of BIPOC artists, whose experiences are often neglected by traditional institutions of research and education, and amplifies the diverse ways embodied research can be conducted through dance creativity. Artists, like scientists, approach their work from a place of inquiry. Art Changes Student Exhibition The Alameda Education Foundation presents Art Changes, showcasing student artwork inspired by this year's theme, "Our Earth: Embracing All Communities." The theme draws from Salma Arastu’s nature-focused collage paintings, Maw Shein Win’s poetry on belonging and ancestry, and Will Chang’s nighttime photography of Alameda. Asian and Pacific Islander Arts & Culture Festival The Rhythmix Asian & Pacific Islander Arts & Culture Festival is a celebration of culture and heritage, where the community comes together to enjoy music, dance, food, and creative activities. Performances from Hālau Makana, The Sampaguitas, Dholrhythms Dance Company, Samoan Solutions, Viet Steps, Lion Dance ME, Oakland Khmer Angkor Dance Troupe, and more highlight the diverse traditions of the Asian and Pacific Islander communities. At a time when opportunities for women in conducting were rare, Marcelli forged a path not only for herself but also for generations of young musicians who would go on to achieve success in music, the arts, and the sciences. Today, YPSO continues her legacy by providing advanced orchestral training to talented young musicians ages 11-21, from 5 Bay Area counties, fostering musical excellence, leadership, and community engagement. Under the direction of Maestro David Ramadanoff, YPSO performs a dynamic repertoire spanning classical masterworks to contemporary compositions, while also emphasizing mentorship, collaboration, and outreach.
