FWIW, many years ago, when it was a one-time purchase, from the iPhone App Store I purchased Scanner Pro from Readdle (be sure it’s from Readdle) and it has proven to be a fantastic scanning app. Having it on my iPhone, I cannot download it again from the App Store to see how “crippled” the free version may be but you might check it out to see if the free version is worthwhile. ?The in-app costs, at $5 a month, are rather expensive unless you do a lot of scanning. I forgot to mention that iOS 18 moved most of the icons around on the control center. It's worse. Buttons for Home shortcuts take two touches instead of one. How is that good? The flashlight is buried in the middle of the screen where you have to hunt for it. Accessibility shortcuts (at least the one I use) are separated from the other shortcuts. The entire aesthetic is jumbled. Steve Jobs is spinning in his grave. I think they dug up Andy Warhol for the layout. There is a new sidebar with touch zones so small it makes you swear, and Bluetooth is now three touches instead of one and Airdrop is elevated to one instead of two. Not a good trade for me.

I get what they are trying to accomplish with Photos, but so far everything else seems to be change for the sake of change and makes using the product more difficult.

David Brenner no more fits in the Hulks clothes, than vice versa.They do it to showcase their new features, the newest and greatest smoke and mirrors, the newest sizzle to sell more steaks.But there is always resistance to change. Yes, by changing the settings and the defaults, more people with “adopt” the new change faster, but also you will make more people angrier than if you let them decide to try the change themselves. I updated to iOS 18 yesterday. Photos is definitely different. I see what they are trying to accomplish but there is a learning curve. As Apple does so often they have changed a number of settings and I'm still tracking those down to change them back to my preferred settings. I think that's rude. If you use grouped tabs in Safari it now takes three touches to change groups rather than two which is a step backward. Full brightness on the display is discernibly less bright, to the point I think about scanners being able to read bar and QR codes on the screen.
