Re: Hi All
I generally agree with Brent. AI is not ready for prime time. One of my personal aphorisms (Davisms) is that software can't do your job for you, you have to know what you're doing.
?
I have a warped sense of humor and a penchant for irony. While I may be wrong--in which case I will apologize--I think Brent uses voice-to-text for his posts. Voice-to-text is fundamentally AI. It demonstrates the failings of AI wonderfully and yet Brent has fallen into its use. That does not take away from the validity of his points.
?
I think that Apple should keep up with and where possible push the boundaries of technology and science. That includes AI. I think rolling out capabilities that aren't in fact very capable is not good business. The customer base should not be beta testers.
?
In the end "you have to know what you're doing." I certainly embrace the little blue (grammar) and red (spelling) squiggly lines that nudge me in the right direction when writing. I'm happy for the availability of Google and other search engines for research. I'm thrilled by Google Scholar for access to meaningful, mostly peer-reviewed and prepub material. I have to go to the library for Lexus-Nexus but I can get Google Scholar sitting at me desk at home (in my underwear). AI is working its way into search engines.
?
You still have to know what you are doing. You have to sort the wheat from the chaff. It helps to be a polymath. *grin* AI still conflates commonality of belief with fact and opinion with fact. Maybe that will improve. I hope so, but for now you shouldn't count on it. I think Brent and I agree on that.
?
Do not confuse your or other's vision of the future and potential with the current reality. AI is not all that good yet. What is sad is that for many people what AI produces IS better than what they can. The movie Wall-E comes to mind. Do better. Be better.
?

Re: Hi All
开云体育The reason I am opposed falls on two reasons. Too much possibility for bad acts.? The second is that people have a bad habit of using it as an aggregate search engine, without fact checking, and using trends instead of facts. It does not check the results against known facts or logic. It then publishes the results to the web, corrupting or polluting the pool of information. Basically, shitting in it own drinking water, making the next use of AI even more corrupt or in error. This continuous corruption is then repeated by both AI and people. This is just like climate change or animal extinction. Little acts that compound bad results.? People used to think the internet was a godsend, instead it has created at least one generation that cannot think for themselves. I see AI, without severe restrictions, as the downfall if the internet.? This may sound like science fiction, but how many sci-fi predictions have come true??? Following iOS18 news for sure! A little uncertain about Ai deployment at this time.
My latest headache: I was going nuts chasing unread messages… some way down on the list, long scrolling up and down hunting for the dot. I get lots of messages. Settings>Messages>Filter Unknown Senders solved it. Now, I can go to < Filters on the top left of the screen, and have my merry choice: All, Known, Unknown, and Unread. My watch mirrors my choices, I am now a happy camper. Heidi |
Re: Hi All
Brent, any particular reason you don’t want Apple getting into AI? I can see where AI can be bad. In the case of writing, it makes it so one doesn’t need to learn sentence structure or even have writing skills. AI can do it all for you.

Steps to Take Before Buying Used Apple Devices
Every once in a while I hear of someone who purchases a used Apple device and then has trouble getting into it in order to make use of it.? Because of security on these devices, there are some steps that anyone buying a used Apple device should take BEFORE the purchase.? Apple discusses this under “Check for Activation Lock before you buy a device from someone else” on the following webpage:
Step 4 is actually applicable to all devices, not just activation locked ones.? It includes directions on handling the situation in which a device is still linked to the previous owner’s account. ? Again, these issues are best dealt with PRIOR TO purchasing a used Apple device.

Re: Password reset problem
开云体育There is a reason I refer to Comcast/Xfinity as “Compost, a pile of rotting vegetation”.?I use them for a few years, and then they really foul up. I don’t even use the email address the assigned me. They communicate with me at my Apple e-ddress, and I use a yahoo address so I don’t have to send out a change of address when they get real stupid or really upset me.? My suggestion is to find another email provider, preferably a free one. Then slowly send out change of e-ddress notifications, and your various accounts over to it. Start with the most important and frequently used. You will find in a couple of months, there will hardly be any email on the Compost email.? I keep at least 3 separate e-ddresses: - private or private business, - an alias for resumes when I was working, - public for lists or other public activities, - and one for activities that might generate unsolicited email, like businesses that are likely to share my info. I have no emotional attachment to this one and can drop it in a heart beat.? And my Compost e-ddress sits unused, not even by Compost.? I only use web mail to clear email issues that cannot be resolved in Apple’s Mail.app. Brent On my iPhone Xr On Jul 16, 2024, at 04:09, Cathy via groups.io <devittad2@...> wrote:

Password reset problem
Xfinity required me to reset a password for my personal email address which I use on my iPad and iPhone only. ?I used the iPad to do the reset. ?All ok. ?The new password works on the iPad which I used to send this email.
?
However, when I tried to reset the password on my iPhone XR using the same method (Settings>Mail>Accounts>Account Settings) and changed the password I got a message "No password provided for (account) Please go to Mail Account Settings and. . .) when I’m actually IN Mail Account Settings.
?
So I tried deleting the account and reinstalling. ?Same result. ?Ideas how to get this issue solved? ?I don’t know what to do next.

As to Apple support or assistance. I have yet to have one of their people refuse to help, if it is a software issue.

I recently experienced some push back on old and what they classify as obsolete hardware, a 2008 MBP, specifically. You can skirt the objection a bit, if you can relate it to a newer version, such as, will it sync or is compatible with this newer hardware or software. If asked politely, they might bend policy, but Apple has begun to remove or hide, support documents, and old software installers. Also on the older stuff, newer employees may just not know.
