I used to be Head of Electronics in a school

That taught me that every plug/socket connection is? a possible failure (apart from degrading the signal)

I have given up on this and am looking for alternative Headphones

Perhaps you might have to resort to using two cables - such as a commonly found 3.5mm to Lightning cable coupled with another that is a Lightning to USB A?
