LMS Bed Extension Kit, HiTorque 16" $99.95
Why will the 16 bed extension not work with other 7X lathes? Are the ways of a different dimension than the HF & Grizzly? From: 7x12minilathe@... [mailto:7x12minilathe@...] On Behalf Of Michael Jablonski

Just a heads up. LMS has their 16 inch bed extension kit on sale for $99.95 This is only for their LMS 7x12 HiTorque lathe. It includes a bed casting, a lead screw, a rack, a chip pan. NOT a bolt on kit. It requires you to drill and tap 10 holes in the new bed casting. < = > |

Hello... I am a new member here and I have the HF 7x10... Was a member at the 7X10 group but they talk about politics there... Has anyone taken the bed extension for the 7X10 and extended by adding to the existing bed? I had thought it could be done with exception of a longer lead screw... Can this lead screw material be bought in bulk? Does anyone know the thread pitch of the Harbor Freight 7X10 lead screw? I have had my lathe for 3 years now for
building small IC engines and general turning... I usually buy my stock in 12" lengths and a longer bed would be helpful... ![]() From: Michael Jablonski To: 7x12minilathe@... Sent: Tue, February 12, 2013 11:40:15 PM Subject: [7x12minilathe] LMS Bed Extension Kit, HiTorque 16" $99.95

I
believe it has something to do with the 16 inch bed being designed for use with
a BLDC (Brushless Direct Current) motor which drives the spindle directly via a
belt. The only SIEG lathes that I know of that have this arrangement are the
Micromark 7x16 and the LMS Hi-Torque 7x12. The lathes that use the HI/LO gear
arrangement are setup to drive the counter shaft with the HI/LO shift gear.
I'm
sure it could probably be made to work with the HI/LO gear HS (Head Stock) but
it might be more work that it is worth.
I seem
to remember something about the motor mount being different
also.
Chris
at LMS might have other reasons as to why it won't work or at least why it is
not recommended.

If I were to do I would have to have both beds faced where they meet clamp them to the underside of a piece of RR track, Nickel weld after pre-heating. The lead screw had me stumped. If I had the specs on the thread I might find one on ebay... OR...Change out the half-nut with a common thread 1/2-16 etc... Just a thought.... ![]() From: Mark Schwiebert To: 7x12minilathe@... It is the size of the motor compartment. The 14 inch kit has room for a 350 watt conventional motor, while the 16 inch kit is sized for the more compact stepper motor used in the Hi Torque lathes. In addition, the bolt hole spacing for the headstock appears different. Interestingly, the longer bed weighs 2 pounds LESS than the 14 inch bed! Probably because of the smaller motor compartment. I've done a couple of 7X bed extensions. I
mill the two faces & bolt both beds to a 1/2" thick steel plate, full
length and 6" wide. The two leadscrews can be neatly spliced together, and
a bit of extra length spliced in at the HS end.

Steve,
You might be able to adapt a leadscrew from an Atlas 6" lathe. Acme 16 TPI,
31-1/2" long, right end unthreaded for 1-5/8", left end unthreaded for 7-7/8".
Didn't think to measure diameter of right end, left end diameter is 1/2" because
that's the bore of the change gears. Left end drilled and tapped 1/4" x 20, also
takes #3 woodruff key. I've seen it said that the 16 TPI thread form is stub
tooth, haven't measured it for depth so I don't know. Replacement split nuts are
available from Clausing and via Ebay.
Just a thought.

I was thinking of using an Acme threaded rod with 2 matching nuts... Make the half nut from the full nut... I have seen the rod and nuts on ebay in various sizes and pitch... Fairly reasonable... ![]() From: "anthrhodes@..." To: 7x12minilathe@... Sent: Thu, February 14, 2013 11:33:09 AM Subject: [7x12minilathe] Re: LMS Bed Extension Kit, HiTorque 16" $99.95

If you buy the bed extension from LMS, they send the new LS along with it.
