Height of compound above ways?

Compound slide height above ways: I thought I would be able to swap tools in their QCTP holders between my Microlux 7x14 and my Vevor 7x14. Surprise!
The height to the top of the compound slide is different on the two lathes; though the spindle center height above the ways is the same.
On the Vevor the top of the compound is about 3.5 mm lower than on the MicroLux. (71mm vs 74.5mm)
The reduction is in the compound slide top and base.
So we're not dealing with exact 'clones' even though it looks like the basic castings are very similar on different machines.
Do other brands/ variants have different heights?
I haven't checked yet, but I think this means that the parting tool holders with the sloping 'ramp' might be usable on the Vevor, while the one that came in the 'set' with the tool post isn't usable on my Microlux. I had to order a 'straight' holder from LittleMachineShop.
The difference might also affect the size of tools that will still be able to be set at center height.

Your MicroMark/MicroLux lathe is a SIEG,

Your Vevor lathe looks like a RealBull clone.

There were some differences in the two lathes.

At first glance most would identify the Vevor as a RealBull and the MicroMark as a Seig.

Using the stock tool post (which is the same dimensions for the 2 lathes - the MicroLux a Sieg, the Vevor a RealBull) here's a 12mm insert tool in the Vevor.

The brass height gauge is at spindle center height.

Here's the same 12mm tool in the MicroLux:

Microlux with 8 mm insert tool in stock toolpost:

So a simple 3.5 mm shim on the Vevor will leave you where you wanted to be?

I'm just going to dedicate a couple of tools in their holders for the Vevor/RealBull. Or put tools in the stock holders and shim them to the right height to use on the Vevor. I'd never get a shim machined accurately enough that I wouldn't have to adjust the tool height when I moved from one machine to the other.
My plan is to use the Vevor mostly with the milling attachment, once I get the carriage and cross slide tightened up. I posted mostly as a FYI for other new owners since it wasn't clear to me at first what size tools I should be buying.

If they're that different, it might be worth it to change them so they're not.? Put the taller compound on the faceplate and turn it down until they match.

If he doesn't trust himself to machine a 3.5 mm shim, I would doubt he'd take a go at the compound slide, anf likely for good reason. A failed attempt at a shim can be thrown out with a shrug, a mangled compound would?be more painful.
In a pinch I would suggest rather settle for a piece of 1/8" stock (3.2 mm) and call it good enough.

Furthermore, the man has an even better way out, he doesn't intend to use the lathe as such but mostly?as a milling machine. The choice of a minilathe?for that purpose boggles the mind, but to each his own

How about a "quick-change" tool post?

Absolutely. But the lathe cost $400 USD delivered and I already had the milling attachment. The very cheapest 'benchtop' milling machine would be 4 times that price without a milling vise collets, etc. 'Ready to work, a little milling machine would be 6 times the price of the Vevor/RealBull lathe. Completely different. As i said in another discussion the lathe was an impulse purchase, and using it for milling seems like a possibility.

Facing a 3.5mm shim in the 4-jaw - absolutely not!

Anyway- as I have said- the whole point of my post about the height of the compound was not to ask for solutions to a problem, but as a FYI for others to prevent them from buying the wrong size tools, presuming that all 7x lathes are built to the same dimensions. But, perhaps I'm the only beginner who didn't know that! :).

I agree - and have a different set of tool holders for each lathe, set to the right height.

If he has the compound mounted on a faceplate to machine it, he’d no longer have a compound to hold a cutter. Unless he has another lathe near by.

In his book Ted Hansen does this by clamping the tool to an angle plate bolted to the cross-slide (he recommends taking 1/16th off the compound because it gives you room to use 3/8” inch tools in the standard 4-way tool holder). So it is possible if all you have is one lathe. ?
