I believe that the 8x is not just a stretched 7x, but a much more robust, rigid lathe than a 7x. There is quite a selection of 7X12 and 7X14 lathes from under $500 and up. I haven¡¯t tried to dig out the specifications as yet but I would start searching with those lathes. The 8X lathes seem to me to be a streched version of the 7X family, increasing capacity without increasing strength or rigidity. Ever run a lathe that has been blocked up to increase the swing? It is the home of chatter! The good news here is that Wally World has the economic clout to ensure a reasonable quality and (I believe) the marketing expertise to do so.
