Subject: SAVE THE DATE 6/12 6:30-7:30pm @Mott's: Charles Allen discussion re: crime ?Hi everyone, A meeting as been set for Monday June 12th, 6:30-7:30pm at Mott¡¯s Market to discuss the increase in crime in our nieghborhood. Please forward this to other neighbors that may not be aware of this. Thank you! Tony Begin forwarded message: From: Noah Bopp <noah.bopp@...> Subject: [Walter Street] SAVE THE DATE 6/12 6:30-7:30pm @Mott's: Charles Allen discussion re: crime Date: June 1, 2023 at 10:13:21 AM EDT To: walterstreetdc@..., 12thStreetsip <12thstreetsip@...>, Gessford Court Area Mutual Support Covid-19 <gessford-cv19@...> Neighbors: On Monday, June 12th from 6:30-7:30pm at Mott's Market, we will host Councilmember Charles Allen for a forward-looking discussion about the rise in crime in our neighborhood. Please join us then to listen, to ask questions, and to share your ideas. A few more details (action items/requests for help in bold): 1. Per neighbor suggestion, Councilmember Allen is reaching out to Commander Bryant to make sure that MPD leadership is present and engaged. He is also reaching out to the ANC. We are also working to have representation from the DC Office of the Attorney General (which prosecutes crime) as well. Some neighbors have suggested inviting Peter Bug. Can someone who has a strong relationship with him volunteer to invite him? 2. I realize that not everyone can make it on the 12th. This is the only time open on Allen's schedule for the next several weeks. If you know you cannot attend and want to share a message or thought, we'll find a way. 3. Thanks to Mott's Market for hosting this event. Allen has asked us to meet inside Mott's so that those who want to share personal stories feel more comfortable, etc. Given space restrictions, I think it is best to consider this a meeting for those served by the three listservs receiving this message (that is, roughly the two-block radius around Mott's). 4. If anyone can help me and Michael Skinner get chairs to and from the event, or if you have access to a large number of chairs within walking distance, please let me know. 5. Allen's office asked me to moderate the event. I am happy to defer to someone with more standing, but I agreed to do this in the interest of moving things forward. As the conversation approaches, I ask that our questions and ideas push us toward better solutions rather than emotional release, and that our language/actions confirm that every law-abiding citizen (of all ages, races, etc.) is welcome in our neighborhood. I will send more information as the 12th approaches. Please send me a direct message if you have feedback or a question. Thanks, everyone. I know this event won't be perfect or solve every challenge. But if we work together I'm hopeful we can make all of our neighbors safer. --Noah Noah Bopp Founder and Head of School The School for Ethics and Global Leadership 202.680.3264 -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "Walter Street DC" group. [Walter Street] Armed Robbery
3
This is the letter I wrote to Charles Allen this morning (note that I am not trying to be exclusive in defining our "neighborhood"; I imagine all will be welcome). I will keep you posted on his response. I'm sure that we won't be able to schedule a time that everyone can make (including me); hopefully those who can't attend can write questions/ideas in advance, and those who can attend will share notes, etc. --Noah Dear Charles, I am writing with the hope you will attend a gathering in front of Mott's Market in the next week to address the unacceptable rise in crime in our neighborhood. (By "neighborhood," I mean roughly South Carolina SE to Independence SE, and 11th Street SE to 13th Street SE. This idea originated on the Walter Street listserv and spread rapidly.) Do you have an evening available in the next week or so to attend and participate in such a meeting? There is broad consensus on several neighborhood listservs that we would like to speak with you. Given this consensus and the concern on Walter Street and in neighboring blocks, I think attendance will be high. (My own schedule suggests that this coming Monday, Tuesday, or Wednesday would work, but I don't need to be present.) You have probably heard about the woman who was robbed and pistol-whipped by a gang of young men this week. This horrible event is proving a turning point in our neighborhood. Far too many similar events are now happening on a daily basis, and there does not seem to be any relief in sight. Though we appreciate the efforts that the Council and police are making to address this issue, there is widespread agreement that it simply is not enough. We need to work with you and other stakeholders to do more. I think I can speak for the group when I say we want this meeting to be forward-looking and full of specifics, rather than a vague exchange of grievances/finger-pointing. We are less interested in hearing about what has already been done (you have detailed much of that in your newsletters) than in how to partner with you to increase our efforts. Some key questions that have been raised include: 1. Understanding the challenge of hiring new police officers, how can we get more qualified and trained officers in our neighborhood as soon as possible? Simply saying "it's too hard" is not helpful for us--there has to be a way. 2. How can we ensure that those who commit crimes like the one referenced above are prosecuted and punished, rather than simply let back on the streets? 3. How can community members work together to deter and respond to crime? This seems particularly important with the summer (which usually brings a rise in crime) approaching. 4. We have heard from police that they are no longer "allowed" to pursue policing methods they believe are effective at stopping crime. What are these methods, why are they no longer allowed (I assume there is concern about racial profiing here, which of course is a legitimate concern), and how can we find fair replacement strategies that work? Thank you, Charles, for your continued work on our behalf. If there is anyone you would suggest inviting to the meeting (ANC Commissioners, DC Police leadership, etc.), we would be happy to follow up. --Noah Bopp (1218 Walter Street SE) Noah Bopp Founder and Head of School The School for Ethics and Global Leadership 202.680.3264

Any interest in measuring nitrogen dioxide emissions from your gas stove?
2
All, I am working on a citizen science project with the Sierra Club's DC Chapter to measure nitrogen dioxide emissions from gas stoves. All gas stoves emit nitrogen dioxide in varying degrees, and these emissions increase the risk of asthma. It turns out that how much nitrogen dioxide a particular stove emits does not depend at all on the age or cost of the stove. (Spoiler alert: it depends more on the size of your kitchen, whether you have (and use!) a range hood vented to the outside) I was surprised to learn that emissions levels from ordinary use of a gas stove can create concentrations of nitrogen dioxide that exceed 100 ppb, the EPA's standard for 1 hour of outdoor exposure to nitrogen dioxide. If you have a gas stove and you have any interest in having its nitrogen dioxide emissions tested, please let me know. The Sierra Club has a few handheld NO2 measuring devices and I can schedule a time in the coming weeks to do it. It would be after June 7. It will take about 45 minutes total because we test at various intervals after the gas stove and oven are turned on (15 minutes and 30 minutes), and then again 15 minutes after the stove is turned off. Thanks everyone, Cara 224 10th Street SE -- Cara Spencer

Drive by shooting/destruction of property incident
Hello neighbors, Some of you may have heard that our front side bay window was a casualty of a recent drive by shooting incident on Sunday, April 9. Fortunately, we were out of town and only came home to find the broken window, shattered glass all over the living room, and bullet fragments on the floor. We reported the incident to the police, Councilmember Allen, and our ANC Commissioner. Please let us know if you have a connection to a window repair company because we cannot seem to get any anyone's attention! Stay safe out there! Liz and Ted 211 11th ST SE

Mott's Sunday Social this Sunday 4 - 6pm at The Dantzics
Dear Friends and Neighbors, Martha and I wanted to invite you to an open-house relating to Motts Market which we are hosting at our house (213 11th Street, SE) this Sunday between 4 and 6 pm. The Save Motts Market group has been holding regular social and other community events including a monthly BYOB gathering at different people¡¯s homes. This will be an opportunity to meet some of the community members who are involved in the effort as well as to learn a little about where things stand. This is intended as a social gathering and we welcome you whether or not you have any interest in making an invesment. All you have to have to come is an interest in the project and a willingness to meet a few neighbors you don¡¯t already know. To give everyone a little bit of background as to where things stand. We are moving forward with the work on the building. We have completed demolition, have submitted an application for a building permit for the first phase of the project, and to date have raised a little more than $600,000 of the $800,000 we believe we will need to complete the renovation and get to breakeven. We have a financial model (with what I think are reasonable assumptions) that has us getting to a cash-flow positive enterprise in a few years and a board that was elected by the investors that is effectively and efficiently moving the project forward. The project has also been personally satisfying as there is a lot of neighborhood enthusiasm (the epicenter of which is in Walter Court). It¡¯s been good meeting a bunch of talented and enthusiastic neighbors and we¡¯ve made a few new friends along the way. We have also begun to talk to various area market operators and there is interest. Some of you have said you are interested in hearing more about investing. If you have interest please let me know and assuming we have a few people who want to hear the formal pitch, including the progress we have made to date, the business model, and the terms of the investment whoever wants to hear it can join Mike Skinner who has been leading the effort and myself at around 5:30. We are also accepting donations if you just want to give a few hundred dollars to the cause. (We are raising money that way as well, but it is not deductible.) If you can¡¯t make it at that time but are interested, let me know and we will find another time. We hope to see you on Sunday. Tipping your peeps, Dell vs Wade and garbage day is tomorrow
Hey neighbors and friends - Just a reminder that tomorrow is the last garbage day before Christmas. James Pierce (JP) is the lead on the garbage crew and has been for 8 years. He¡¯s got 2 colleagues on his route. He was a delight the other day when we met for the first time face to face ¡ª- he wondered why he¡¯s never seen me and I explained David is in charge of Waste Management. At any rate, I know JP and his team will appreciate any gratitude for their service this year. As will the recycling team when they come back next Tuesday(Monday is a holiday) Also, don¡¯t forget your milk delivery crew, composting team, UPS, Amazoners etc. And most of all don¡¯t forget the two guys who look out for us all year long on 10th and 11th St. SE, your USPS mail carriers Dell and Wade ¡ª and on top of taking care of us, they look out for each other and back each other up all year long. Dell is clearly the most charming and reliable of the two, but aren¡¯t we grateful for two amazing guys who are walking our blocks day in and day out, looking out for us and our precious mail??
