Mott's Sunday Social this Sunday 4 - 6pm at The Dantzics
Dear Friends and Neighbors, Martha and I wanted to invite you to an open-house relating to Motts Market which we are hosting at our house (213 11th Street, SE) this Sunday between 4 and 6 pm. The Save Motts Market group has been holding regular social and other community events including a monthly BYOB gathering at different people¡¯s homes. This will be an opportunity to meet some of the community members who are involved in the effort as well as to learn a little about where things stand. This is intended as a social gathering and we welcome you whether or not you have any interest in making an invesment. All you have to have to come is an interest in the project and a willingness to meet a few neighbors you don¡¯t already know. To give everyone a little bit of background as to where things stand. We are moving forward with the work on the building. We have completed demolition, have submitted an application for a building permit for the first phase of the project, and to date have raised a little more than $600,000 of the $800,000 we believe we will need to complete the renovation and get to breakeven. We have a financial model (with what I think are reasonable assumptions) that has us getting to a cash-flow positive enterprise in a few years and a board that was elected by the investors that is effectively and efficiently moving the project forward. The project has also been personally satisfying as there is a lot of neighborhood enthusiasm (the epicenter of which is in Walter Court). It¡¯s been good meeting a bunch of talented and enthusiastic neighbors and we¡¯ve made a few new friends along the way. We have also begun to talk to various area market operators and there is interest. Some of you have said you are interested in hearing more about investing. If you have interest please let me know and assuming we have a few people who want to hear the formal pitch, including the progress we have made to date, the business model, and the terms of the investment whoever wants to hear it can join Mike Skinner who has been leading the effort and myself at around 5:30. We are also accepting donations if you just want to give a few hundred dollars to the cause. (We are raising money that way as well, but it is not deductible.) If you can¡¯t make it at that time but are interested, let me know and we will find another time. We hope to see you on Sunday. Since being green is about advancing equity, protecting the environment, and building the local economy, a green business could come in many forms. From restaurants to clothing stores, to hair salons and beyond, the way each business embodies sustainability will differ. Fortunately, the District offers many support opportunities and resources for businesses, no matter where they are on the path to sustainability. The Department of Energy and Environment (DOEE) offers a centralized webpage for sustainability incentives and programs available to businesses, and has staff available to provide guidance. They can be reached by calling DOEE at (202) 535-2600 and asking for the sustainable business program staff in the Urban Sustainability Administration. Tipping your peeps, Dell vs Wade and garbage day is tomorrow
Hey neighbors and friends - Just a reminder that tomorrow is the last garbage day before Christmas. James Pierce (JP) is the lead on the garbage crew and has been for 8 years. He¡¯s got 2 colleagues on his route. He was a delight the other day when we met for the first time face to face ¡ª- he wondered why he¡¯s never seen me and I explained David is in charge of Waste Management. At any rate, I know JP and his team will appreciate any gratitude for their service this year. As will the recycling team when they come back next Tuesday(Monday is a holiday) Also, don¡¯t forget your milk delivery crew, composting team, UPS, Amazoners etc. And most of all don¡¯t forget the two guys who look out for us all year long on 10th and 11th St. SE, your USPS mail carriers Dell and Wade ¡ª and on top of taking care of us, they look out for each other and back each other up all year long. Dell is clearly the most charming and reliable of the two, but aren¡¯t we grateful for two amazing guys who are walking our blocks day in and day out, looking out for us and our precious mail?? Maximizing Food Recovery
I case you don't get his DC newsletter. Summarizes lots of good efforts, events, opporutnities in the District. ----- Forwarded Message ----- From: Sustainable DC <sustainabledc@...> To: "antoniaherzog2004@..." <antoniaherzog2004@...> Sent: Friday, October 28, 2022 at 10:31:08 AM EDT Subject: Maximizing Food Recovery Having trouble viewing this email? View it as a Web page. October 2022 Photo Credit: Food Rescue US ¨C DC We just wrapped up Food Recovery Week in the DC metro area, which took place October 16-22. The week was full of in-person and virtual events to help participants understand what they can do as individuals and as part of community efforts to reduce food waste and increase food security. Are you familiar with food recovery initiatives in your neighborhood or ward? Here are some places to start: The brand new Reuse DC website powered by the Department of Energy and Environment (DOEE) includes information about how food businesses can connect to organizations that take food donations and how to volunteer as a food rescuer. The DC Food Recovery Working Group supports food recovery on all levels, from source reduction, to food donations, to composting. The group of representatives from food banks, nonprofits, and other partners meets monthly and encourages the public to join. The DC chapter of Food Rescue US connects businesses with excess food to organizations that need it. These initiatives and others help us meet the food and waste goals in Mayor Bowser¡¯s Sustainable DC 2.0 Plan, but more work is needed. Check out the DC Food Policy Council to see how local changemakers are driving policy toward a more equitable, healthy, and sustainable food system in the District. Reuse DC Launched DOEE is excited to announce the launch of Reuse DC (reuse.dc.gov), the first website of its kind that serves as a District-specific information hub on how to repair, donate, and shop second-hand items ranging from furniture to clothing to other household items. Through reuse.dc.gov, the public will be able to search an online map-based directory, explore how to exchange items with neighbors, learn about the importance of food recovery, find an upcoming Fix-It event, discover grant programs, and more! Reuse DC celebrates the partnerships between government, businesses, nonprofits, and other stakeholders vital to the District¡¯s commitment to expanding local donation and reuse resources. In addition to the reuse.dc.gov website, DOEE¡¯s newly created Reuse DC team provides funding to organizations innovating and expanding District resources through the Donation and Reuse Award Program, established in 2022 in partnership with the Chesapeake Bay Trust. The application for the 2023 Donation and Reuse Award Program is currently open through December 8, 2022. For more information, please see reuse.dc.gov/page/programs. Donation and Reuse Grant Award Winners In 2022, DOEE, in partnership with the Chesapeake Bay Trust, awarded the inaugural Donation and Reuse Awards, which included eight awards totaling $64,000. The program funded a donation and reuse project, services, outreach, and education. The 2022 awardees were: A Wider Circle Common Good City Farm Community Forklift Frontline Gig, Inc ShopReuse LLC The Fresh Food Factory Market The Salvation Army National Capital Area Command Three Part Harmony Farm Faunteroy Center Receives Grant for Resilience Hub Project The FH Faunteroy Community Enrichment Center was awarded a grant through the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) Environmental Literacy Program to lead intergenerational efforts to build climate resilience and address complex environmental problems with Ward 7 residents through a model built on self-determination and collaboration with public and private partners. The project's geographic focus is on Ward 7, home to not only the majority of single-family homes in Washington, DC's 100-year floodplain, but also a predominantly Black population that faces increased climate vulnerability due to socio-economic stressors and legacies of systemic racism. check stolen from mail 4
Hi neighbors, Today I found out that someone stole my visa payment (via a check) out of the mail and somehow wrote the check to someone else and cashed it. (Yes, I am still old school and write checks but this situation is likely changing my old ways). Then they tried to write 2 more fraudulent checks from my account for large amounts that couldn't go through since I didn't have enough money. I filed a police report and the police officer said this has happened to others in the neighborhood. He is going to reach out to the Postal Inspector for DC but wanted to make everyone aware of this!
