I¡¯m so sad we¡¯ve missed an opportunity to give the alley a meaningful name.

Reply-To: TERI MEMOLO <pterim@...> ? ? ? ? ? ?Dear Neighbors, For those of you who don¡¯t know, this email is in regards to the alley between the 200 block of 10th and 11th St., SE bordered by C & Independence Southeast I just want to express how disgusted and hurt I am that our neighbors across the street have decided to not use the Furies Alley name that won in the original vote and in the process have also managed to ¡°other¡± Furries, like there is something wrong with being a Furry. https://www.vice.com/en/article/bjmq9d/how-the-furry-community-became-a-safe-space-for-youth I hope you all take this time today to educate yourselves on the Furries that you have decided to allow one household to discriminate against, judge and hate. This alley naming is a step back for the LGBTQI movement as well to not honor the Furies and the people who overwhelmingly supported that name. As well as women as the Furies were feminists. That you chose rocks over human beings to honor takes my breath away. Its as generic a name as they come and sounds very suburban enclave ish. I would never have imagined this attempt to name an alley could go so wrong. I don¡¯t even think these rocks we are now honoring are the original historic rocks from the alley. Shameful. River Rock Alley could be anywhere. We were hurt across the street, that neighbors decided to exclude neighbors from the discussion of this process and more than abutting alley people are affected by this atrocity. It would have been much more neighborly to be inclusive even if we did not get a vote. Maybe we could have talked this neighbor down. I am now reaching out to the Furry community. We might start an org. I will definitely attend any functions now, wearing ears and tail and invite anyone else who wishes to Fur out. I¡¯m still in shock and I hope this is not offensive to anyone. But I cannot believe we are fearing people who dress in furry heads and defying the actual history living right here. I hope to ALSO reach to the the Furies so they can bear witness to this travesty. Many of them are still alive. Who knew something so silly would come up in the naming of the alley. Now I have to live the rest of my life knowing the alley name was guided by discrimination. Please forward to anyone I have missed. Good day. patio table - free!
Neighbors, We have a patio table that we are giving away. Though we had it set up we never really used it as it was a little big for our space. See attached photos. It is disassembled and easy to move. It is 30" tall and 60" in diameter. It is resin wicker on a aluminum frame with a glass top. There is a hole in the middle to allow for an umbrella. DOEE AND THE WHARF REVEAL NEW HIGH WATER MARK SCULPTUREIN CELEBRATION OF FLOOD AWARENESS WEEK
Thought this was interesting enough to share. Antonia ----- Forwarded Message ----- From: DC Department of Energy and Environment <doee@...> To: "antoniaherzog2004@..." <antoniaherzog2004@...> Sent: Friday, June 17, 2022, 03:01:23 PM EDT Subject: PRESS RELEASE: DOEE AND THE WHARF REVEAL NEW HIGH WATER MARK SCULPTUREIN CELEBRATION OF FLOOD AWARENESS WEEK FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: June 17th, 2022 CONTACT: Nicole Goines, PIO, (202) 536-7666 cell, nicole.goines1@... DOEE AND THE WHARF REVEAL NEW HIGH WATER MARK SCULPTUREIN CELEBRATION OF FLOOD AWARENESS WEEK Artwork Educates District Residents on Flood Risk and Resiliency WASHINGTON ¨C In celebration of Flood Awareness Week, The DC Department of Energy and Environment partnered with The Wharf to help raise District residents¡¯ awareness of flooding through a June 21 ribbon cutting ceremony of a High Water Mark (HWM) sculpture located near the Municipal Fish Market at The Wharf in Ward 7. HIGH WATER MARK DC is a public art project that identifies the extent of historic flooding during storm events within DC's floodplain (the area at risk of storm-caused flooding). The District has more than 2,800 properties in the Special Flood Hazard Area (that is, regulatory floodplain area) vulnerable to flooding, and more properties are becoming subject to floodplain designations. Severe weather and flooding can happen at any time and the District has experienced significant flooding events in the past. It is critical that District residents stay alert and prepare for flooding. ¡°The High Water Mark sculpture visually communicates the flood risk that the District faces, can increase our understanding of potential flood risks, and identify the best strategies to build resilience in flood-prone communities,¡± said DOEE Director Tommy Wells. ¡°The Bowser Administration¡¯s commitment to prepare for climate change and ensure Washington, DC is sustainable and resilient for future generations are possible with partnerships such as the one demonstrated today.¡± Curry Hackett & Patrick McDonough are the DC-based artists, designers, and educators who designed the Wharf High Water Mark sculpture. Together, they collaborate with municipal agencies and neighborhood stakeholders to create site-responsive and community-minded public art initiatives along the East Coast. The sculpture is supported in part by the Federal Emergency Management Agency. It is one of three such markers, located in Kingman Island and Marvin Gaye Park respectively, intended to help the public understand the risk of flooding, and encourage them to become more resilient to future flooding. Learn more about your flood risk at dcfloodrisk.org, and find out how DOEE is working to help you manage it at doee.dc.gov/service/flooding. STAY CONNECTED: Questions? Contact Us SUBSCRIBER SERVICES:

Sunshine sointense, you can see the humid haze in the air and the heat radiating from the sidewalks. A sure sign that the summer heat waves are here as well. Extreme heat, often referred to as a "heat wave,¡± is an extended period of high temperature usually accompanied by high humidity. This past month DC saw one of the most extreme May temperatures in the last decade. Temperatures rose to the high 90s (highly unusual that early in the year) and we are set to experience even higher temperatures before the season ends. Extreme heat can be, well, extremely dangerous. Temperatures in this range can lead to dehydration, heat exhaustion, and heat stroke. Heat can also decrease water and air quality, cause blackouts, and affect overall city infrastructure. In the District, the Homeland Security and Emergency Management Agency¡¯s (HSEMA) Heat Emergency Plan is available to address times of extreme heat. It is initiated whenever the heat index reaches 95 degrees, with ¡°cooling centers¡± being activated across the city. Cooling centers are places where residents can gain some relief during extreme heat periods. They range from air-conditioned facilities such as libraries and recreation centers to outdoor spaces such as swimming pools and spray parks. Once activated, these cooling centers are fully open to the public and available across all Wards. Click here to access the District¡¯s interactive 2022 Cooling Center Map and find your local cooling center. You can start preparing for the heat ahead by staying informed through District social media and communication channels, downloading the free HSEMA app, signing up for AlertDC, creating a Family Emergency Plan, or building and re-stocking your Emergency Kit. For more information on where to go and what to do, call 311 or text 32311. DC Commission on the Arts and Humanities Panel Highlights Flood Resilience On June 2, the DC Commission on the Arts and Humanities held a virtual discussion focused on photographers, filmmakers, and planners who address flood resilience in Washington, DC, New Orleans, and other locales with threatened shorelines. This was all to celebrate the Fragile Beauty exhibition that opened in May. Featured speakers were artists Alexandra Silverthorne and Bahar Y¨¹r¨¹ko?lu, New Orleans architectural designer and planner Jaime Ramiro (Rami) Diaz, and the Department of Energy and Environment¡¯s (DOEE¡¯s) Allyson Criner Brown. Anacostia Environmental Youth Summit Draws Local Students to Learn About Their Environment DOEE¡¯s Watershed Protection Division welcomed 350 3rd through 8th graders from DC Public Schools at Anacostia Park for the 2022 Anacostia Environmental Youth Summit on May 20. DOEE partnered with the Friends of Anacostia Park for this fun day of learning about the ecological and human history of the Anacostia River. Students went on boat tours of the river with the Anacostia Watershed Society, Earth Conservation Corps, and Anacostia Riverkeeper. They enjoyed music and roller skating in the National Park Service¡¯s Anacostia Skating Pavilion. And they participated in engaging activities with 15 education partners. The summit also included a zero-waste lunch, with compost and recycling as a central focus. Ultimately, it was great educational day out at Anacostia Park. 10th Annual DC Electric Vehicle Grand Prix Showcases Student Knowledge On April 30, DOEE, along with partners Global Energy Education Environment (Global EEE), Pepco, and the University of the District of Columbia (UDC), hosted the 10th annual DC Electric Vehicle (EV) Grand Prix at the Bertie Backus-UDC Camp
